Deputies Investigating Explosion in New Vrindaban
Posted November 14, 2010
Deputies in Marshall County are investigating what members of a Hare Krishna community say was a threat targeting them because of their religion.
Members of the New Vrindaban community are working with the Marshall County Sheriff's Department and prosecutor's office to find out whether a recent incident was a serious threat or a prank.
On Nov. 1, members reported hearing a loud explosion and said four devices were tossed from a moving vehicle. The incident happened at the New Vrindaban's buildings near Moundsville, said New Vrindaban security force member Gerald Yule.
Yule said he believes pieces of tin foil that littered the ground were from a homemade explosive device. But law enforcement officials are still investigating if the devices were explosives, noisemakers or something else.
Yule said most of the community and guests were in the temple for a 24-hour long festival, chanting and using instruments, so few heard what happened.
"One was tossed out here at the vehicles. It could have caught a vehicle on fire, but by the grace of God we was saved from a huge explosion," Yule said. "Our security force was out and we heard a large explosion," he said.
He added that he believes the incident was a "thought-out methodical plan. They designed this before they got here, so they planned on doing this."
Yule said the community has been the victim of cases of minor vandalism before, but nothing like this.
"There's a lot of families here with children and we do not want to see anybody get hurt, in the community or outside of the community," Yule said.
