A Letter To Athum
Posted December 31, 2005
Hari Bol Athmun;
I hope this letter finds you in good spirits and in good health.
Your letter called out to me in a very profound way. This predicament you are in is a well traveled road. Throughout the history of this great search for the Absolute (Iskcon, Gaudiya Matha) we can find the continual battle between progressive and regressive tendencies. It exists in all religions in one form or another. In Christianity you will see the orthodox and evangelical. In Islam you will see Sunnis and Shiites. Catholics and Protestants. The Ying and the Yang. What is this saying to us? Only that we have yet to understand what Srila Prabupada was trying to reveal.
My suggestion to you, if I may, is that you forget about all of the discrepancies, all the various arguments for whoever is right and focus on the NAME of Krishna. We do not have time to argue about who should prevail. Besides we do not care. It makes no difference in the transcendental realm. We (you and me and all of us travelers on the path to pure bhakti) are only concerned with the NAME. This is Lord Chaitanya's message and it is the message of all His sincere followers. This is the real business for this age. The chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord. This is our only business. Let the pundits pontificate. They can only stir the dust of the material energy. It will fly up in our faces and distract us from the duty at hand.
The scriptures are filled with sweet words that will guide us to the right conclusion. You need only to make yourself fit to accept this message. Your business right here and right now is to pick yourself up after tripping over the concocted phrases of the word jugglers. Look in the mirror and ask yourself "Am I doing what Srila Prabhupada wants me to do"? If not, then what must I change? I need to be chanting sixteen rounds of the Holy Name everyday. I need to be avoiding bad association. I need to be following the four regulative principles of human life. I need to be hearing transcendental vibrations each and everyday. I need to be honoring the Lord's remnants everyday. These are the basics food groups you should be consuming each and everyday. When these activities begin to manifest in our lives then all confusion, anarthas, offenses and whatever will be removed from our hearts. It is a beautiful thing when this happens. But you must make the effort. You can not wait for the situation to become favorable. As Srila Sridhar Maharaja said..."The environment is always favorable". It is only me and me alone that must change. We can not waste our valuable energy contemplating the faults of others. If we do then those faults will become ours. We will inherit them. And don't we have enough of our own?
Please forgive me if I have spoken too harshly. My only intent is to offer
up some personal realizations. If they can help you in your quest for the
truth then take what you need. You will find that doing these things is a
lot more fun than putting the pieces of the puzzle back together. One last
thing....pray to Srila Prabhupada and Lord Chaitanya to put you in the
association of a Siddha Bhakta. This individual will be able to give you
love of God because he *actually* has it. Srila Prabhupada has given us
everything we need to progress in spiritual life. We just need to make
ourselves fit to accept them.
