In Memory of Puru Prabhu

Lokaguru prabhu recently was kind enough to forward to Chakra an article written by Puru das, quoting extensively from a constitutional draft by Srila Prabhupada. Although the article was signed by "Puru das adhikari", we were unfortunately unaware that Sriman Puru prabhu had already passed away from a heart attack on April 25 of this year. We offer our condolences to his family and other well-wishers, and we thank Chakra reader Jitakrodha das for letting us know of the passing of Puru prabhu.

We feel that the article is nevertheless newsworthy and helpful to an ongoing Vaishnava dialogue on constitutional organization of ISKCON. It is not a complete Constitution, of course, since it does not include a set of By-Laws stipulating offices, terms of office and means of election, but along with an earlier statement of principles for his "League of Devotees" it seems to embody Srila Prabhupada's first thoughts on the subject of formal organizational structure.

Puru das was a prolific writer. A page of remembrances of Puru prabhu has been posted, as well as a memorial by his godbrother Madhavananda prabhu.
