Glorious Departure of Harshita Devi Dasi
Posted October 8, 2010
By the desire of Sri Krishna, my maternal grandmother, Harshita devi dasi, passed away unexpectedly at 67 in Vallabh-Vidyanagar, Gujarat, India on Friday, October 1. Both she and her husband, Ramamurti das Adhikari, had been initiated by Srila Prabhupada in March 1977 in Kenya. The couple established two ISKCON temples: one in Mombasa, Kenya in the 1970s and the second in Vallabh-Vidyanagar, Gujarat in 1985.
My grandmother had had bronchitis and extremely low blood pressure; due to a partial heart failure (pre-angina for the third time in a week) she passed away in full conciousness but very smoothly without even knowing that she was departing.
At the last moment she told the doctors and nurses in her intensive-care unit that Lord Krishna in the form of Srinathaji (the deity of Sri Madhavendra Puri, and traditionally worshipped in Gujarat) would bless them spiritually for the care they had offered her. Immediately after remembering Lord Krishna in such a way she passed away.
My grandmother had a unique taste of service. She had made about five hundred outfits for the Radha-Krishna and Gaura-Nitai deities for ISKCON temples in Kenya and India during the last 35 years of her life. Her home for the past 27 years, known as Sri Caitanya Sankirtan Kutir, has deities of Sri Radha-Krishna, Gaura-Nitai and Laddu-Gopala, as well as Giriraja Govardhana silas. Harshita prabhu made numerous outfits for Them also. That was the service she liked very much. Even after being admitted to hospital last week she was still sewing and knitting garments for the deities.
Please pray to Srila Prabhupada and Sriman Mahaprabhu to kindly bless her departed soul that wherever it goes it may remain in the company of pure devotees of the Lord always immersed in the service of Their Lordships Sri Sri Radha-Shyamasundar, Sri Krishna-Balarama and Sri Gaura-Nitai.
Saccidananda das Adhikari, of ISKCON's Ludhiana temple, will conduct her funeral ceremony on Tuesday, October 5 in Dakor (Dwarka), where the original Dwarkadhish/Ranachora Raya deity installed by King Vajranabha, great-grandson of Lord Krishna, presides. Contact numbers in India are +91 (0) 9316970600 (her son-in-law, Rajasuya prabhu, temple president of ISKCON of Ludhiana, Punjab) and/or +91 (0) 9898136101 (Ramamurti prabhu, her husband).
