New Training Center for Women
Posted July 14, 2010
New devotees are the life of our ISKCON movement! Their youth, enthusiasm, thirst for knowledge, and fresh energy rejuvenate us all and support our services and preaching activities. Srila Prabhupada indicates in Bhagavad Gita As It Is, Chapter One, that women, in particular, are the protectors of religion in Vedic society. If women are not properly trained and protected, then the moral fiber of the children and entire family declines. Without protection of women and cows, there is no varnashrama society and no future for our movement. Toward this end, we are establishing a training facility and ashrama for new devotees, specifically women, at the New Raman Reti community in Alachua, FL.
A triple-wide mobile home has been purchased and needs to be moved and set up at the back of the temple property. In addition to the considerable expense of setting up the building, there are numerous permits and small jobs involved in preparing the land and outfitting the facility. By the mercy of Sri Sri Gaura Nitai, Sri Sri Krsna Balarama, and Sri Sri Radhe Shyam, these needs expand the opportunities for you and I to get involved, offer some service, and “pay it forward!”
Who can forget the joy and camaraderie we experienced as new devotees living in the temple? Yet how many of us would have joined if there had been no program, no facility, and no one to receive and welcome us? Unfortunately that is the current situation; a situation which we are determined to remedy.
It was Srila Prabhupada’s desire that ISKCON not only maintain, but expand by preaching and caring for devotees. One of Srila Prabhupada’s unique preaching strategies was that he sheltered and trained women within ISKCON temples, and engaged them in frontline preaching, Deity worship, and teaching, amongst other things. Our desire is to preserve and extend this legacy, and to expand the dynamic preaching spirit that attracts new devotees to Srila Prabhupada’s service. Eventually we want to see ashrams and training programs for new devotees open in many other temples and farm communities, as this was Srila Prabhupada’s program for delivering forgetful souls back to Lord Krsna’s lotus feet.
The training center will provide a residential ashram facility for women enthusiastic to serve fulltime in the training of others. Additionally, foundational and Bhakti Sastri courses will be offered at regular intervals, allowing interested women to study and practice in the sheltered environment of the ashram for a short period of several months. Retreats are also planned, some specifically for devotee women, and others for nondevotees who are interested in vegetarian cooking, yoga, kirtan, gardening, or other devotional arts.
We have many qualified organizers and teachers who are eager to assist: i.e. Laxmimoni dasi and Akuti devi dasi. Krodasamani devi dasi has agreed to come and teach yoga; Nanda devi dasi and others are available to organize and teach a variety of sastric and practical courses. Yet we need your involvement, ideas, and prayers to make this project a success.
Your support in the form prayers, blessings, funds, furnishings, appliances, and other household items is required in order to establish this program. The sooner we raise the funds, the sooner the building can be moved, set up and the classes can begin.
