Chippiwada Temple Entrusted to ISKCON

Trustees of the Sri Radha Krishna Mandir in Chippiwada (New Delhi) have handed over management of the historic temple to ISKCON.

This is a temple which has a long prior connection with the Krishna consciousness movement but which had previously been independently managed. It is where Srila Prabhupada stayed for a long time, most particularly when he had to be in New Delhi to arrange for printing of the first canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam or to publish and distribute his Back to Godhead magazine before he finally departed for the west with the goal of spreading Krishna consciousness worldwide. Also, the Radha-Krishna Deities of the Chippiwada temple are among the few which Srila Prabhupad himself personally worshiped for a long time.

During his presence among us, Srila Prabhupada had tried to buy the temple, but the trustees at the time were not interested. By his mercy and by the mercy of Sri Krishna, early this year the current Sri Radha Krishna Mandir trustees began discussions with H.H. Gopal Krishna Maharaj, followed by talks with Raghava Pandit das. Being convinced of ISKCON's good intentions and becoming satisfied with the future management plan, they settled the legal donation requirements on August 19 and handed over the temple to ISKCON.

Srila Prabhupada once wrote in the temple's guestbook: "I am pleased to write herein that I have come to Delhi from my H.Q. 1/8/59, Keshi Ghat, Vrindaban (U.P.) purely on spiritual mission to propagate the cult of devotional service of the Lord. And I am more pleased to mention herewith that Sriman Sri Krishna Sharma, Haribhaktanudas, has provided me a suitable room for my literary activities.

"I am publishing an English fortnightly magazine of the name Back to Godhead from this place, and the Nawal Prem Shabha, of which Sri Krishnaji [Sharma] is the Hon[orar]y Secretary, is arranging for my daily lectures on Srimad Bhagwat.

"Late Pandit Jyoti Prasad Sharma, father of Shri Krishnaji, was also known to me, and during his lifetime whenever I used to come to Delhi, Late Pandit Jyoti Prasadji would provide me with [a] residential place. His good son is also following in the footprints of his noble father, and as secretary of the Nawal Prem Shabha, he is doing good service in propagating Rama Nama all over the city."

Editor's Note: We at Chakra would like to join with the New Delhi devotees — and indeed with the worldwide Gaudiya Vaishnava community — in offering humble thanks to the Sharma family and the Sri Radha Krishna Mandir trustees for their heartfelt trust in ISKCON and for their extremely generous donation of the Chippiwada temple. May their profound faith in ISKCON's benevolence and management plan be amply justified. We know that the Sri Radha Krishna Mandir was significant for Srila Prabhupada during his earthly pastimes, and we are sure that the temple will be both a significant centre of worship for Chippiwada residents and a place of pilgrimage for devotees worldwide. Hearty congratulations to all involved. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and to Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
