The Ohio State University has over 45,000 students and another 20,000 staff and faculty from diverse cultural backgrounds. This sprawling campus is of historical significance for all American Vaisnavas. On May 9, 1969, Srila Prabhupada lead thousands of students in kirtan at Hitchcock Hall, along with Allen Ginsberg. The much-loved Jayananda Thakur studied mechanical engineering at OSU, and later built the first Ratha Yatra chariots in North America. One of Prabhupada's first disciples, Hayagriva dasa, was Professor Howard Wheeler at the English department at OSU.
The 'Festival of Transcendence - 2006' is a modest attempt by devotees to increase student awareness and re-establish an enduring presence on campus so that interested students can explore Krishna Consciousness in their own way, at their own pace. Our student group has been conducting regular programs on campus, but this is our first large event, inviting the Festival of India group.
