Atlanta ISKCON Rathayatra & Chip Rice Festival
Posted May 10, 2004
Come celebrate the 28th annual Rathayatra & Panihati Festival in Atlanta June 4th, 5th, & 6th. Rathayatra is on the 5th and the Chip Rice Festival on the 6th. Website: www.panihatifestival.com.
Srila Prabhupada named the Atlanta Yatra "New Panihati dham" on his first and only visit in 1975. During that visit, he told the story of Lord Nityananda's pastime in Panihati Dham, a small but great village in India.
This inspired Balavanta Prabhu, the temple president at the time, to travel to Panihati Dhama with a few devotees from Atlanta. There, they celebrated the Panihati Festival under the very same tree where Lord Nityananda started it all.
The next year, 1976, the temple began celebrating the festival with an offering of eight ceramic pots. In 1981, His Holiness Jayapataka Swami became inspired by the devotees efforts and help expand the festival. He explained how to prepare the pots, their meanings, and the ingredients of the basic 18 flavors. Every year, he prepares each of the 300 or so pots.
