Prabhupada And Nrsimha Welcomed By Local Devotees

Three events of note occurred at the Spanish Fork Hare Krishna temple last Sunday. At long last Srila Prabhupada arrived in his life sized murthy, so kindly donated by Ram Kishan and Kulwant Khandpur of Los Angeles.

Bhakta Justin and Bhakta Blake drove into the temple parking lot with Prabhupada in the passenger seat of a BMW, to a waiting kirtan party. Prabhupada was taken in circumambulation around the verandah, placed on his vyasasan (temporary, to be replaced by a much grander one soon to come from Madras), given pushpanjali by about 100 devotees, and offered a grand aratik. Cary Hanks, owner of Cary's Floral in Spanish Fork, created a fantastic garland of yellow roses, among many other garlands for the priests and new initiates. Many devotees were visibly moved seeing Prabhupada as fully present for the first time in the State of Utah.

With Prabhupada now presiding, Priest Satish Kumar, a Tirupati trained Sri Vaishnava, conducted the installation procedures for a 20" high golden Lakshmi Narasimha deity. Everything was done gorgeously, with sonorous Sanskrit chanting, heaps of flowers (Cary again), and background bhajans, in sequence:

  • 4:30 pm Vishwaksena puja
  • 4:45 pm Punyaha Vaachanam - Temple warming
  • 5:00 pm Arrival of Prabhupada, offering of flowers (pushpanjali) and guru puja
  • 5:25 pm Garlanding of Priests
  • 5:30 pm Raksha bandhanam - Tying sacred band for deities and Yajamanas
  • 5:45 pm Adhi Vaasam - Immersing the deities in milk, water and grains.
  • 6:30 pm Fire sacrifice, Donors of $ 108 and new initiates offer samagri into the fire. Pradhana Homa - Narashima moola mantra homam
  • 7:00 pm Prana Pratistha - Main event. Invoking Deity in the murthy
  • 7:15 pm Abhishekam, Archana, arathi, mantra pushpam chanting.

Then, Bhakta Blake, Bhakta Justin, and Bhaktin Mikela were no more, but now Bharat Das, Jairam Das, and Mekala Devi, as Caru returned them their japa beads, and well wishing devotees tied their kunti mala around their necks. Mekala and Bharat have been frequenting the temple for one and a half years, Jairam for 9 months. Jairam and Mekala graduated Spanish Fork High School in 1994 and 1997 respectively. Bharat graduated nearby Payson High in 1997. A fair number of devotees from Utah have been initiated in the last 20 years, but none from Spanish Fork and nearby Payson, and none who have decided, like these three, to dedicate themselves to spreading Krishna Consciousness here in the place of their birth.
