Srila Prabhupada's Vision
"This is Vrndavana. There is no need, and I don't find in Bhagavatam, [for] big factory and slaughterhouse, no. Nothing. [In materialistic Western cities] The whole atmosphere is surcharged with sinful life. How people will be happy? Now they are coming to crimes and hippies and so many things, problems, diplomacy, CIA and what other [kinds of nonsense]? So many unnecessary waste of energy, time, and money. Vicious condition. Better give up city. Make [your farm community] Vrndavana, like this. City life is abominable. If you don't live in the city, you don't require petrol, motor car. It is no use. They may criticize that "You are going to the farm in a car." So for the time being, there is vehicle. Otherwise [travel by] bullock cart-where is the difficulty? Suppose you are coming [to the farm in an automobile and it takes] one hour, and [by bullock cart] it takes one day. And if you are satisfied [with] such [simple] life, there is no question of moving. Maybe local moving, from this village to that village. That is sufficient, bullock carts. Why motor car? Drive here and park problem. Not only park problem, there are so many things. There are three thousand parts [in each] motor car. You have to produce them [with a] big factory."

There is lots of news this week about New Talavan's recovery from Hurricane Katrina. Read on for details.
The Sri-Sri Radha-Radhakanta Mandir is back on the normal schedule, as it was before the storm. Please see our website www.newtalavana.org/temple.htm for details. The only change is that the evening offering and arati are now at 5:30 and 6:00 PM, respectively.
Food for Life
At present while still repairing the temple properties, we are only distributing prasadam at the temple twice daily. Breakfast is at 8:15 AM and dinner is at 6:30 PM in the Pavilion. Devotees like Drumila are still collecting funds for Food for Life prasadam distribution, and as soon as possible we will continue to distribute in New Orleans and the local area.
The Sunday Feast is again being held weekly as usual, beginning with noon arati. Please plan to arrive a little early so you can get a parking space and reach the temple in time to greet the Deities.
ISKCON New Orleans
First we offer our thanks to ISKCON Dallas for hosting the Deities of Srila Prabhupada, Sri-Sri Radha-Radhakanta, Sri-Sri Gaur-Nitai and Jagannatha Swami, Baladeva and Subhadra from the New Orleans Temple. Most of the devotees previously from the New Orleans Temple are still in Dallas also. We are gradually cleaning up the New Orleans temple grounds. Fortunately there was no water damage inside the temple itself. Power and other utilities are expected to be back on soon, but there is still no schedule for re-opening the temple.
Devotees in Hospital
The devotees seriously injured in the tragic early August crash in El Paso are still in the hospital, although by Krsna's grace both are out of the ICU, are awake and talking. We are trying to make arrangements to have them moved to physiotherapy clinics in the Dallas area as their condition gradually improves.
Thank to generous donations collected by New Talavan's ISKCON GBC representative, His Holiness Bir Krsna Gosvami, donations made from our website and appeal letters via PayPal, and the response to our recent mailer, Krsna's treasury is doing well, and we have sufficient funds to continue operations. Our usual means of funding-Food for Life and book distribution collections in the New Orleans French Quarter tourist district-are still inoperative, and probably will remain so for some time. Therefore, additional special fundraising appeals may be necessary in the future to continue rebuilding and operations.
Earlier reports that no cows were injured by Hurricane Katrina were in error-it just took awhile to find them. Two cows were killed as a direct result of the storm, probably by falling trees. Repairs to the extensive damage to our fences, equipment shed and hay barn continue. We were able to fertilize, and will cut hay once more for winter. The amount of hay in storage is marginal, however, and we may have to purchase feed hay to get through the winter.
Our elementary school is back in session. The Gurukula building roof was repaired by a crew of devotees, with funding from collections by Bir Krsna Maharaja. Special thanks to Mother Krsna-krpa for her hard work and assistance with the repairs. Indoor repairs of the second-floor classrooms are still ongoing.
Repair of the electrical systems of the residential quarters on the temple property was made possible by funds collected by Bir Krsna Maharaja.
Temple Cleanup & VIP Visits
Thanks to the New Talavan devotees for mounting an extensive cleanup of the temple property. Thanks also to His Holiness Bir Krsna Maharaja and Jayapataka Swami for their merciful visits, kindly giving us their enlivening Krsna-conscious association.
