Update on Tamil Nadu Relief Efforts
Posted January 22, 2005
Dear friends and devotees,
Please accept my humble pranams.
We would just like to send a quick update regarding the relief efforts in Tamil Nadu. Our team of volunteers have been distributing free food throughout the affected areas for the last two weeks. Due to the hectic relief schedule it is sometimes difficult for our volunteers to provide the latest information and photos to you through our website. We apologize for this inconvenience.
Below you can find a few photos of the relief activities going on in Tamil Nadu. As mentioned in our last letter, we have now opened a permanent relief center in Chennai to focus on providing long term care to those affected by this disaster, especially the children who have suffered the most from this. As months go by and the relief agencies leave, we fear the children will continue to suffer as they are slowly forgotten by the public and media. With this in mind the Bhaktivedanta Ashram is launching the "Tsunami Orphans Relief Fund" to care for the needs of these children throughout their lives. From now on whenever you donate to Bhaktivedanta International Charities online, you may specify if you would like your donation to go towards the "Tsunami Orphans Relief Fund". We hope that this fund can help ensure that these children will never be neglected or forgotten.
Purpose of Tsunami Orphans Relief Fund
To provide long term relief and assistance to children orphaned by this disaster in the following forms: food, clothes, education grants, medical expenses, counseling and other needs. This fund is not intended only for short term relief, but will continue to help these children throughout their lives.
We would like to thank all of you who have come forward to help the relief efforts in Tamil Nadu. Your kindness and generosity has allowed us to offer some service to our brothers and sisters in their time of need.
As a side note, it has been brought to our attention that the U.S. Congress has passed a special legislation on Thursday allowing all donations given in January towards the Tsunami relief efforts to be written off on last years taxes. This means any donation given this month can still earn you tax credits for last year.
Once again I thank you for your commitment to service and pray that Lord Sudarshana will protect you at all times with the sixteen weapons raised in his divine hands.
Yours in service,
Jahnava Nitai Das,
Bhaktivedanta Ashram &
Bhaktivedanta International Charities
