Vrindavan, the Playground of God
by Isvara das
Posted September 29, 2011

Its with great happiness that we announce the release of our newest publication, Vrindavan, the Playground of God.

After a long wait, we have finally released the deluxe coffee table book, “Vrindavana, the Playground of God.” This coffee-table book is a visual-rich guide to the holiest place of pilgrimage for the worshippers of Lord Krishna, Sri Vrindavana Dhama.

When Lord Krishna comes to this world, He performs wonderful pastimes to attract living entities to come back to Him in the spiritual world. He appears in many forms, all of them fully transcendental to this material world, and in those forms He exhibits wonderful qualities which are displayed in the course of His activities and interactions with His devotees.

The main place of these pastimes is Sri Vrindavana Dhama, an area of about 168 square miles or 438 square kilometers in north-central India. There Krishna appeared about five thousand years ago and performed pastimes in many places throughout the length and breadth of the entire region. (Click here for the full article)

New E-Book: "India & Beyond: Plane Reading for Part-Time Babajis"
by Braja Sorensen
Posted September 18, 2011

Light reading for yogis, bhaktas, babajis, and wanna-be's while traveling to India---and beyond. From the beginnings of my own personal spiritual path in a dusty outback town in Australia, "India & Beyond" starts at childhood and goes from cow protection to Jesus in Denmark, through to ganja smoking holy men, cult religion, spiritual equality, and old age, each chapter an often comic journey through the challenge that is India. It records some victories and even delivers some questions, and all of it viewed from front row seats in the Eastern Philosophy grandstand. You game?

We regret to inform the Vaisnava community of the passing of a special devotee. Her Grace Vaisnavi Devi Dasi (Koosumwatie Seeredat) left her body on the night of Sunday, September 11, 2011, at the age of 67. Mother Vaisnavi was an initiated disciple of HH Romapada Swami and a sincere servant of Srila Prabhupada. She was a pioneer of the Queens Yatra, starting the first home program with H.G. Sunanda Dasa in the area. Mother Vaisnavi was well-known and very well-loved in the New York Vaisnava community. She is survived by five daughters and one son.

The ISKCON devotees of Queens, New York express their deepest condolences to Mother Vaisnavi's family. Travelling Book Distribution Opportunity
by Prahlada-Nrsimha das
Posted September 6, 2011

This is an open invitation to all devotees to have the most transcendentally wonderful time of your life by taking part in Prabhupada's book distribution mission on travelling sankirtana.

Our dearmost Srila Prabhupada worked hard to produce his books, and wanted his followers to distribute them. As he says in his commentary to Srimad Bhagavatam, 3.21.31: "A person in Krishna consciousness, a devotee of the Lord, is always compassionate. He is not satisfied that only he himself is a devotee, but he tries to distribute the knowledge of devotional service to everyone. There are many devotees of the Lord who faced many risks in distributing the devotional service of the Lord to people in general. That should be done."

There is a great opportunity for anyone who would like to take up this wonderful service of book distribution for a short or a long time. Krishna has provided a very nice custom-outfitted sankirtana camper van from which to distribute books. (Click here for the full article)

Chippiwada Temple Entrusted to ISKCON
by (name withheld)
Posted September 1, 2011

Trustees of the Sri Radha Krishna Mandir in Chippiwada (New Delhi) have handed over management of the historic temple to ISKCON.

This is a temple which has a long prior connection with the Krishna consciousness movement but which had previously been independently managed. It is where Srila Prabhupada stayed for a long time, most particularly when he had to be in New Delhi to arrange for printing of the first canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam or to publish and distribute his Back to Godhead magazine before he finally departed for the west with the goal of spreading Krishna consciousness worldwide. Also, the Radha-Krishna Deities of the Chippiwada temple are among the few which Srila Prabhupad himself personally worshiped for a long time.

During his presence among us, Srila Prabhupada had tried to buy the temple, but the trustees at the time were not interested. By his mercy and by the mercy of Sri Krishna, early this year the current Sri Radha Krishna Mandir trustees began discussions with H.H. Gopal Krishna Maharaj, (Click here for the full article)

  How to Finance Solar Projects
by Chris Walker for GEETA, Inc.
Posted September 29, 2011

There was recently an article on Chakra about the benefits using of solar energy. Although they pay out over the long term, the upfront money can be a bar for those who lack the funds to buy a system outright. Here are some alternatives as to how to acquire a system:

Five Options for a Nonprofit to Fund a PV System

The purpose of this document is to share information on several options for a non-profit to fund the installation of a Photovoltaic system on their property.

Before we review the alternatives, let’s take a few minutes to understand the basics of a typical solar system as well as definitions related to funding opportunities.

Photovoltaic (PV) Power Systems convert sunlight directly into electricity. A residential PV power system enables an owner to generate some or all of their daily electrical energy demand on their own roof, (Click here for the full article)

New Temple Makes Utah "Krishna Country"
by Madhava Smullen, Reposted from ISKCON News
Posted September 27, 2011

Krishna Culture youth group performs Bharat Natyam dance.

On a recent Friday evening, motorists in Salt Lake City, Utah, pulled over to take photos, while pedestrians stopped in their tracks, staring as a llama wandered sedately down 33rd South, one of the busiest streets in the city. The surreal scene even made its way onto Fox News that night.

In rural Spanish Fork, one hour's drive away, the sight of a llama would have been common, as they are one of the many attractions at the area's Hare Krishna temple. The temple, a stunning feat of Rajasthani-style architecture, has grown more and more popular since its construction in 2001, and draws thousands of guests for its many festivals, including the phenomenally successful Festival of Colors, and yes, Llama Fest.

So naturally any llama-spotting in the area would indicate that the Hare Krishnas weren't too far away. But where could a llama have come from in the middle of Salt Lake City? (Click here for the full article)

Remembering Gopiparanadhana Das
by Dravida das, Reposted from Dandavats.com
Posted September 17, 2011

I was shocked to learn this morning that my old friend and colleague Gopiparanadhana prabhu had left his body suddenly at Govardhana. Just a few days ago I sent him a chapter of his Laghu-bhagavatamrta translation I had been reviewing — and now he's gone. What a loss for our society and the world! He was a pure and vastly learned Vaisnava who impressed everyone with his firm faith in and loyalty to Srila Prabhupada and his movement, his genuine humility, his warm and open personality, and his deep realization of the intricacies of bhakti. Of Pride, God and Asteroids
by Niscala dasi
Posted September 10, 2011

I recently came across a comment on the internet: “I’m an atheist, and proud of it”. I have heard of such statements before, relating to pride in what one believes, not just in atheism. I wonder what there is to be “proud of” in a belief, and is anything really worth being proud of?

If anything, pride is justified when it is related to reducing suffering in the world. But there is truth in the secular aphorism “pride goes before a fall” and if one becomes proud- of even good action- then it can lead to a sense of superiority, which can lead to a patronizing “better-than-thou” attitude towards those whom one is helping.

On the other hand, taking some pride in what one does, can lead to more enthusiastic endeavor. How this happens is that pride, as we all know, is related to ego, which is our sense of identity. When one finds it, one finds oneself- with knowing self, comes knowing one’s purpose- just as knowing what a toaster is, implies knowing its purpose. (Click here for the full article)

Nectar of Instruction Ecourse
by Dhruva Maharaja das
Posted September 6, 2011

Samapriya dasi and I, both Srila Prabhupada disciples, began teaching Internet eCourses three years ago with Bhagavad-gita As It Is. Last year we added a Sri Isopanisad eCourse, and now we are teaching Upadesamrta, The Nectar of Instruction from September 12 through October 10, 2011, thus providing a step-by-step procedure for learning the philosophy of Krsna consciousness.

Lord Caitanya advented 500 years ago to bestow upon mankind the most elevated sentiments of love of God, called prema-bhakti, and He empowered Srila Rupa Gosvami to write instruction books on how to develop this flavor of love, following in the footsteps of the residents of Vrindavana.

Now devotees can study and learn sastra from their own computer, during a time convenient for them (you don't need to be present at any particular time), in the association of other devotees from all over the world. (Click here for the full article)

Montreal to Hold Prabhupada Festival
by Samir Roy Choudhury
Posted September 1, 2011

In 1968 His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada visited Montreal for several months, helping to lay the groundwork for the preaching of Krishna consciousness in Canada.

ISKCON Montreal will be celebrating the 43rd anniversary of this historic visit from September 2 through September 5 (Labour Day weekend). We have arranged on Saturday, Sept. 3, a three-hour boat cruise on the St. Lawrence River. There will be chanting, dancing with ecstatic kirtan and Prabhupada reminiscences from many senior Prabhupada disciples, including our chief guest, the renowned artist Puskar das.

On Sunday, Sept. 4, the devotees will have a maha Harinam visiting 3720 Avenue du Parc (Montreal’s first temple location, a one-time bowling alley which the devotees had converted) and the quarter where Srila Prabhupada stayed for three months. In the afternoon the temple will be celebrating Sri Radhashtami mahotsava.

On Monday, Sept. 5, the devotees will conclude the festival by having an outdoor kirtan, (Click here for the full article)

  Prison Inmates Express Gratitude
by Bhakti-lata dasi
Posted September 29, 2011

Sometimes devotees ask me if the inmates are grateful for the support IPM provides to them. You can find this answer loud and clear, in the quotes below:

"Hare Krsna. Once again I am humbled by your gift. My appreciation is seated deep within. I really am at a loss for words. Every day the Lord blesses me in so many ways. I devour all reading material. If I'm not at my job, which unfortunately doesn't allow any reading material while there, I am at my bunk, immersed in all these Vedic wisdom I am so fortunate to have.

"I offer anyone who shows interest a book to read, and I've had several chances to share with others. I've, by Krsna's mercy, learned so much; I know there is so much yet to be revealed, but I am at peace knowing these prayers to Sri Sri Radha-Krsna. Chanting and reading and studying, God will keep advancing the spirit while freeing me from the grasp of material ignorance and passion.

"I will forever remember and be thankful for the copy of Bhagavad-gita you sent me in County Jail; it has started a wheel in motion that, to me, is priceless and my most valued treasure. May you and your endeavors be blessed. May ISKCON and IPM be blessed. (Click here for the full article)

To be clear, the following is a joke (adapted from its Christian roots) meant for entertainment purposes only. The names are random, not meant to represent anyone who may actually be called by these names.

This is a story about old Rama das and old Tulasi das, two members of an ISKCON forum, who were always at odds with each other. They were constantly at each other's throat on issues concerning ISKCON. When one of them said "yea," you could be assured that the other would say "nay."

So, one day old Rama das dies and arrives at the court of Yamaraja. He notices how Yamaraja asks everyone a question before they proceed. When it was his turn, Yamaraja said: "Hi, Rama das, to see if you qualify for Vaikuntha, I need to ask you to spell Krishna for me."

"That's easy," says Rama das, and goes: "K-r-i-s-h-n-a."
