Devotees Remember Hladini Prabhu
by New Vrindaban Communications
Posted September 30, 2010

Sunday, October 3, is the 20th anniversary of the day on which Hladini devi dasi was brutally gunned down by an extra-judicial firing squad in war-torn Liberia in western Africa. The death squad arrived at the Hare Krishna temple in the capital city of Monrovia in the early morning hours, and ordered the devotees to come out. Seven devotees, five men and two women, exited the temple and filed into the waiting jeep.

They were driven a short distance to the Sturton Bridge, where the devotees were forced out at gunpoint and herded onto the sand next to the river. The leader announced that only the men would be killed. Thus Hladini, a woman, knew the war criminals had not planned to kill her.

As the leader raised his weapon to fire the first execution volley, Hladini leapt forward and attacked him with her bare hands. She shouted: "How dare you kill the devotees of Krishna? Better you kill me than kill them!" Hladini was the first to be shot. (Click here for the full article)

22 Karat Solid Gold Narayana Murti
by Vrindavan das (Victor Epand)
Posted September 27, 2010

September 19, 2010 was Vyanjuli Maha Dvadasi here in New Delhi, India, and I took the opportunity to establish a new Khumba with 22 karat solid gold form of Narayana Murti inside. Joining me for the whole day were 2 Brahmans from Bhubaneswar, Orissa, one of whom was very fluent at chanting Sanskrit mantras and in performing the necessary rituals. First we performed abhiseka and purification of the murti outside of Khumba. A Sarvatobhadra Mandala was drawn using a bed of grains and colored powders. Offerings were made to the fire yajna along with mantras.

Later, the murti was placed inside a jeweled vessel and covered by a copper vessel filled with wheat, covered by a cloth, and tied with a flower garland (the Khumba). (Click here for the full article)

Hare Krishnas Can be Barred From Soliciting at Lax

by City News Service
Posted September 24, 2010

A federal appeals court has ruled again that airport police can enforce a city ordinance barring the Hare Krishnas and other groups from soliciting immediate donations at Los Angeles International Airport, officials said Thursday.

In July, the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals lifted a preliminary injunction which barred Los Angeles Airport Police from enforcing the ordinance prohibiting solicitation and receipt of funds in the terminals, parking areas, and adjacent sidewalks at the airport.

But the International Society for Krishna Consciousness of California filed papers requesting a re-hearing, and the court agreed to keep the injunction in place while that request was considered. (Click here for the full article)

Suicide of Citra Devi Dasi
by Murlidhar das
Posted September 22, 2010

I went to New Mayapura for the Kuli Mela with my daughter Namamrita and her children. I heard about the suicide of Citra Mataji and felt deep sadness and compassion. Can anyone imagine how much physical and mainly emotional pain she must have been suffering when she set herself alight or jumped into the fire? Can any one of you remember when you burnt yourself, how painful it was? She must been in a terrible, painful hell of isolation.

I personally know devotees in ashrams who deal with their emotional pain by taking antidepressants. I have my pains and turbulences and challenges in my life, but I decided to find people in my life who can listen to my pains with empathy and compassion and who don't come up with solutions of throwing quotes and slokas at me. I feel safe and can let go more and more of my self-inflicted wounds. (Click here for the full article)

Money Sweeter Than Honey
by HH Bhakti Raghava Swami
Posted September 14, 2010

Money is so dear that one conceives of money as being sweeter than honey. Therefore, who can give up the desire to accumulate money, especially in household life? Thieves, professional servants [soldiers] and merchants try to acquire money even by risking their very dear lives. [Srimad-Bhagavatam 7.6.10]

"Money is sweeter than honey" is a common expression which has a special significance for most people living in the modern era of industrialization. The global politics of governance and diplomacy now place more emphasis on artificial, factory-based economic growth than on the traditional, natural, agriculture-based growth of a country, thus forcing people to live in such a way that they will not be able to subsist without receiving a paycheque at the end of the month. That is the propaganda being promoted, and, to a large extent, that is today's reality of life. A Press Trust of India article, "Need to Migrate Workers from Agriculture to Services for High Growth: RBI" (June 18, 2010), in no unclear terms give credence to this ongoing policy. The Darkness of Silence
by Niscala dasi
Posted September 10, 2010

Malati Prabhu, in her response to Krsnachandra prabhu, seems to have missed the essential point. The essential point of Krsnachandra’s article was not that the GBC banned Aindra’s book, indeed he says that he only “believes” it to be so…his essential point was that our society needs to be open and accepting of critics. Whether it be at a local level or global level of administration, our society should welcome truth, no matter how unpalatable it may be. It is after all, purported to be sadhu-sanga- a society of sadhus- “thoroughly truthful” souls.

In varnashrama, which Srila Prabhupada requested we introduce in ISKCON, the thoroughly truthful-known as the brahmanas- are in control of the managers and executive members of the society- the ksatriyas, who must always abide by their advice. Rather than silence the thoroughly truthful, ksatriyas are behooved to support them, honour them, listen to them, and follow all their instructions. In varnashrama society, (Click here for the full article)

Upcoming New Vrindavan Celebrations
by New Vrindavan Communications
Posted September 10, 2010

On Wednesday, September 1, millions of people around the world will observe the ancient Vedic festival called Krishna Janmastami. Technically, Janmastami marks the day on which Lord Krishna descended from the spiritual world to the planet earth 5,000 years ago. Commonly, however, Janmastami is known as the joyful celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth.

The ritual is to fast the entire day of Janmastami, followed by a midnight celebration with singing, dancing, and a free vegetarian feast commemorating the birth of Lord Krishna. “Last year, New Vrindaban had approximately 100 different preparations. The midnight feast is a great opportunity to try out a smorgasbord of eastern and western dishes, all of which are made with love,” said Malati Dasi, one of New Vrindaban’s GBCs. For those who may feel hunger pangs earlier in the day, Govinda’s Snack Bar and Restaurant will be open all day. (Click here for the full article)

Scandinavia Rathayatra Tour 2010
by FFA Kingscross
Posted September 3, 2010

A team of sport girls from Mumbai happened to bump into the Rathayatra festival in Gotenburg.

Friday 2 July 2010. Arhus was to be the first Rathayatra of the tour. Being a low budget tour we had to get to our destination as cheaply as possible. So we crossed the English channel from Ramsgate to Ostend in Belgium and then commenced a two day drive through Holland and Germany then into Denmark. Our old merc van used to be Tribhuvanath prabhu's so you can imagine how old it is. The police in Germany had previously stopped us and told us the van belonged in a museum. Then 50km outside Arhus the unimaginable happened, we bloke down. It was 7pm, we fiddled with the van till 1am, took some rest, woke early and fiddled some more. Finally after a lot of tears, sweat and the occasional curse, the van moved. We were so elated. We arrived bang on time for an estatic Rathayatra. Lord Jaganath was making us call out in desperation.

HH Mahavishnu Swami heads up this tour. (Click here for the full article)

Recently the wonderful book entitled Our Srila Prabhupada: A Friend to All (Early Contemporaries Remember Him) was reprinted. Inside you will find a rare glimpse into the early years of the most important spiritual figure of modern times; a man who has transformed the spiritual landscape of the entire world. It is the result of the untiring efforts of Srimati Mulaprakriti dasi, who left this world in Vrindavana in 2004.

Here are recounted the priceless recollections of friends and well-wishers and the love and admiration of many vaishnavas who knew him before he left India to fulfill the desire of his guru to spread Krishna consciousness through the world. Mulaprakriti prabhu has also included the memories of those who had his divine association during the early years of ISKCON.

We hear firsthand about his relationships with them, and even see their photographs, putting a face to the names of many we have heard of and many we have not. Most of these associates are old or have already left this world, so we are fortunate that these unique interviews are available. Interviews are grouped in chapters: Calcutta From the 1920s, (Click here for the full article)

Humility in Preaching
by Bhaktin Sara
Posted September 22, 2010

I sometimes get the impression in the Hare Krishna movement when we go out to preach, that some people think everyone we meet is sinful, destined for hellish life, and that by us being there sharing the holy name, we save them from so much misery.

I understand that the holy name is very powerful and that some people are suffering due to lack of spiritual knowledge. Nevertheless, do we have the right to judge others and assume that everyone besides Hare Krishna practitioners are destined for hellish life? There are many people from all religions and all walks of life devoted to God. Any form of devotion is beneficial for the soul. We learn in the Vedas that not everyone is in the mode of goodness, and not everyone will take right away to Krishna Consciousness, and in that case any form of sacrifice, worship, or devotion to God is beneficial for the soul. Krishna tells us in the Bhagavad-Gita that it is better to be a sincere street sweeper than a charlatan meditator, and in chapter twelve of the Bhagavad Gita we read about many different levels of practice one can do - following regulative principles, always thinking of Krishna, working for Krishna, or simply offering some charity. Krishna-bhaktas worldwide, regardless of affiliation, are saddened to hear of the deteriorating health of His Holiness Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Maharaj, who has been diagnosed as suffering from inoperable (metastasized) stage-4 colorectal cancer. According to a posting by B.V. Madhava Swami & Brajanath das, a biopsy has shown that the tumours in his colon and small bowel are malignant and in an advanced stage, and doctors have concluded that it is too late for chemotherapy or radiation therapy to be of much use now.

Though he is advanced in years, being just five months shy of 90, Srila B.V. Narayana Maharaj has continued until very recently as an active Gaudiya Vaishnava leader -- writing, translating and publishing books; delivering numerous lectures; travelling widely; opening temples and preaching centres; and inspiring devotees worldwide with what is possible to achieve when one's heart is surrendered to Lord Krishna and to his or her Spiritual Master. The forecast said, heavy thunderstorms as it had for the last three weeks or so, but that didn't stop the Rath cart team from getting an early start on their way to the festival site. Then without warning disaster struck. The truck began overheating and completely shut down. Dharmaraj called Dharmatma who has a similar truck and he was on his way in a few minutes to the rescue.

They finally arrived at the beach two and a half hours late so there was no time to waste. But then another calamity. The truck and Jagannath's cart sunk in the soft sand and wouldn't move. The Lord was testing their resolve. Within a few minutes they gathered 6-8 sunbathers who proceeded to push the cart free and on it's way to the starting point. (Click here for the full article)

24 Hour Sri Harinam in Honor of Aindra Prabhu

On behalf of the 24 HOUR Harinam Festival in DC Committee

As the 12 Hour Akhanda Harinam was one of the major most successes in the ISKCON DC Metro yatra on the New Year's Eve (2009), the stronger and never extinguished desire to have a 24 Hour Harinam here at the Potomac ISKCON Temple got intensified by the senior Srila Prabhupada desciples, senior devotees of the area, 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation ISKCON devotees and Gurukulis, our very dear and precious Congregational members, visitors and Friends of Lord Krsna.

The glorious and untimely departure of one of the very best Kirtan leaders in the world, our beloved Sripada Aindra prabhu, made this need of having more and more Harinam chanting as an emergency call for all of us around the world, to take up the process of Krsna consciousness even more seriously as we practice it in our daily lives by constantly glorifying the Lord through His Holi Names collectively if not possible by individual efforts. Tragic Suicide at ISKCON New Mayapur

In a profoundly sad development, the death of a devotee in ISKCON's New Mayapur community in France has been deemed a suicide. According to temple authorities, in the early morning hours of July 23 Citra devi Dasi, a devotee for more then twenty years, committed suicide by setting her body on fire. The following is a letter from Hrdaya Caitanya Das, the GBC secretary for France:

"We are profoundly saddened that in New Mayapur on Friday 23 July in the early morning hours (around 1:00 am) Citra mataji committed suicide by setting her body on fire.

Citra mataji joined ISKCON in Spain more than twenty years ago. For many years she has been serving Their Lordships at New Mayapur with great dedication and in a very devotional mood. Her life was very simple and centered around Krishna. She lived in a room in the castle and had no other aspirations than to serve the Lord with whatever means she had.   Distressed Devotees Need Empathy, Not Slokas
by Dusyanta das
Posted September 29, 2010

After reading Muralidhara prabhu's article concerning the suicide of Citra devi dasi, I wanted to contribute by supporting the sentiment. Our ISKCON that was created by Srila Prabhupada is based on the principle of a family. If we live in a situation in ISKCON where there is no counselling, support and help. then this is not a representation of ISKCON and of Srila Prabhupada.

As we all go through our lives and our commitment to Srila Prabhupada we encounter reversals on the way. They can come in a number of manifestations — physically, emotionally, mental trauma, philosophical pressure, and family ups and downs. When we experience these reversals, then as humans we need support, understanding and help to get through it to a more healthy place on the other side.

Certainly, quoting texts and throwing them at a distressed person won't help a thing. There has to be a period of rehabilitation where there are others who know how to deal with the pain in a professional way. (Click here for the full article)

Krishna is Within Everyone
by Gaurav Mittal
Posted September 27, 2010

Bhaktin Sara makes a very good point in her Chakra article "Humility in Preaching". She was evidently taught that the people who are not Hare Krishna bhaktas are at lower level.

I tried to share similar views in an earlier article "Spiritual solutions to ISKCON's problems".

We need to understand from an absolute perspective that everyone is part of Krishna and everyone is sat, cit and ananda; i.e., full of eternity, knowledge and bliss. It is illusion to see the self as a product of matter. When this illusion goes away, one will see everyone as manifestation of Krishna.

When a person sees people as superior or inferior, he deviates from the Absolute Truth, and such a person cannot come closer to Krishna. The Bhagavad-gita is full of slokas where Krishna describes that devotees see everyone as manifestations of Krishna. How can you look down upon others when you see them as a part of your beloved Krishna?

Unfortunately, some of the people who have preached to Sara prabhu have apparently seen themselves as a product of inert matter. (Click here for the full article)

I have found a storefront on Nob Hill, which is adjacent to the University. The landlord is agreeable to give me a years lease provided that I can give him the required move in costs. I have been in Albuquerque for 4 months and have no regular income to acquire or support the temple. Help Needed
by Prem Nidhi Das
Posted September 20, 2010

As some of you may know me and my situation that I was happily serving in ISKCON Vrindavana temple till 2007 Janmastami. Due to my health reasons I was unable to continue my service there from then as I was getting dizzy and felt much fatigue as my body became thin and had no stamina to continue my service any more so I officially resigned and came to Nepal and stayed in Kathmandu near ISKCON temple here.

As I returned I was in the hospital for 7 days and it took 6 months to get better. That finished all my saved amount of three lakh rupees that I received from different sources. After 9 months of being better I was heavily sick again hospitalized for two weeks. At this point we did not have any money to take care of the situation. Then we borrowed or my wife took debt loans to complete this course of treatment. This time it was very expensive as each dose of injection was Nepali Rs. 3000/- (Click here for the full article)

Elemental Artistry Fire Dancers mesmerize the crowds

It had taken half a day to set up the stage, seating, professional sound system and lighting. And now the booths were erected, banners hung and kids’ inflatable obstacle course in place. On the second stage, musicians were tuning up. The prasadam was beautifully displayed. The music began, and the gates were flung open. Hundreds poured in to this anticipated, well-advertised event. Fox news was there at the onset as the perfect evening began to unfold.

Marti Walker, a soulful singer/songwriter who debuted to the devotee community at the recent L.A. Rathayatra, greeted guests in the temple room with her powerful singing of sacred chants on keyboard with accompanying flute and drums. Out on the main stage a group of 15 Nepali refugees sang traditional Bhajans, while the ladies danced in unison. On the small stage in the courtyard where the Prasad was being served was Krishnamrita on guitar, singing songs in her native French and in Portuguese, as well as Vaishnav bhajans in English and other, original songs. 1. Slaughterhouse Mrdangas. This is an issue that has been on my mind for some time I know there are those who would rather it remained unaddressed and may even take offense by it. Nevertheless, I feel compelled to speak out and let the chips fall where they may.

2. Another cow hit by a car but is on her way to a full recovery.

3. Vanamali's fourth calf. (Click here for the full article)

Padayatra Ki Jai
by FFA Kingscross
Posted September 11, 2010

Last week the Deities Sri Sri Nitai Gaurasundra traveled out of Bhaktivedanta Manor on their Padayatra Chariot to benedict any random living entity who happen to be on their path. We were fortunate to have their association and the association of HH Mahavishnu Swami who danced his way everyday through the busy streets of London. We were staying at Hindu Temple, where we were greeted by the Temple leader.

In Southall we arrived late 9pm the temple was closed but as soon as the pujaris heard kirtan they opened the doors and more then a dozen pujaris and managers spontaneously danced and chanted with us on the Southhall high street. Lord Caitanyas lila did not stop 500 years ago - its an eternal lila where we are all invited to take part.

Srila Prabhupada's Plan for New Vrindavan
by Madhava Gosh
Posted September 10, 2010

New Vrindaban is currently poised on the edge of a rejuvenation. Devotees are becoming enthused and there is a general agreement that a Master Plan is necessary.

New Vrindaban had a special place in Srila Prabhupada’s heart as it was the first farm community. He hoped it would become an example for many other farm communities to follow. Unfortunately along the way New Vrindaban, under the pressure of the macro society, slipped in a mood of consumerism, of being dependent on outside inputs.

Thus it seems to be appropriate to review some selected quotes of Srila Prabhupada to gain an understanding into what his ideas are, not only for New Vrindaban specifically but for all ISKCON farm communities.

“Krishna by His practical example taught us to give all protection to the cows and that should be the main business of New Vrindaban. (Click here for the full article)

Spiritual Solutions to ISKCON's Problems
by Gaurav Mittal
Posted September 3, 2010

When I came to know about the child abuse in ISKCON, I was shocked to find that the child abusers were in position of guru in ISKCON. Other gurus and leaders did not see anything wrong in them. Their followers worshiped them as exalted personality or pure devotee. The abuse by Dhanurdhar Swami were well known. I could not understand how such person like Dhanurdhar Swami could have position of guru in ISKCON.

During the early 2000s, Dhanurdhar Swami did some initiation ceremony at the house of the disciple of Prabhupada in New Jersey. I felt that this disciple was ignorant in letting a child abuser come to his house and initiate disciples. Some time ago, I came to find out that this person's son was severely abused by Dhanurdhar Swami. His son was extremely upset when he came to his house. He ignored his own son and let Dhanurdhar Swami come to his house. What can cause such person to be blind towards his own son? Devotee is compassionate. He feels the pain when he sees the pain of others. How can such devotee don't feel the pain of his own son? (Click here for the full article)
