Daily Prescription for Kartika
by Dhruva Maharaja dasa
Posted September 30, 2009

From Padma Purana, quoted by Sanatana Gosvami in Hari-bhakti Vilasa: "Kartika Vrata is a special time to worship Radha Damodara, and especially to get the mercy of Srimati Radharani since it is Her month. She is very easily pleased during this month if one worships Her along with Her beloved Damodara."

Sadhusanga.com recorded Chapters 29-33 of Srimad Bhagavatam Tenth Canto describing The Rasa Dance from both Krsna Book and Sarartha Darsini, a commentary on each verse by Srila Visvanatha Chakravarti Thakura.

The entire reading lasts 10 hours, so if one listens to 20 minutes each day, he not only absorbs his mind in Radha-Krsna's divine lilas each day during the month of Kartika, but will complete the entire reading on the 30th day. (Click here for the full article)

LA Devotee in Urgent Need of Housing

A devotee in Los Angeles is struggling right now and could use some assistance. Her husband passed away two years ago, soon after which she had an accident involving both her legs, leaving her unable to walk. Currently she can only walk short distances using her walker.

She has been evicted from her apartment and has to be out by the last day in September. She currently has very little money and little physical mobility due to her current situation with injured legs. She has applied for various government programs for financial help and should be getting enough money to get her own apartment by the beginning of next year. Until then, she cannot afford an apartment, and has no place yet to go as of September 30th.

Any help that can be offered would be great including but not limited to: (Click here for the full article)

An Athlete Reminds Us: Gender Not Always Black and White
by Amara Das Wilhelm
Posted September 27, 2009

When South African track star Caster Semenya was recently identified as intersex by the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF), much of the world was shocked to discover that not everyone is 100 percent male or female. News anchors scrambled to define terms such as "intersex" and "hermaphrodite," while doctors were forced to explain how modern science determines sex to begin with. There were outcries over Semenya's right to privacy and the so-called shame of her being globally pronounced anything less than purely male or female.

All this commotion would likely surprise those of the world's ancient cultures, including the Vedic, who demonstrably possessed a more rational understanding of sex and the gray area existing between male and female. (Click here for the full article)

The house can be rented from 1 year minimum till 5 years maximum. The cost would be 1.5 lacs per year (150'000 rupies). This does not include the electricity bill and maintainance. Minimum payment should be made for 6 months. If someone commits for years we give them rebate of 5,000 rupees.

When you go along the parikrama path you have to turn left at the Krishna Balarama tree and go a few more meters. Many nice Indian and western devotees are living in this area. The house has a nice veranda where one can read, chant or do other activities with a view to the small garden of the house. (Click here for the full article)

Varnasram Newsletter Started
by Vrndavanlila dasi (Dr Vrinda Baxi)
Posted September 7, 2009

In his last days' message to the devotees, Srila Prabhupada put emphasis on the importance of Varnasrama and mercifully left that 50 percent of the job of his spiritual mission for his empowered disciples, giving them an opportunity to thus serve the Lord and gain proximity with Him. They in turn, carrying on the tradition of munificence, have passed it on us, while guiding us by example.

His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada condemned the social setup based on industrialism, materialism and a perverted value system. He called for a spiritual overhaul of society and also began the process by teaching the world the profound principles of love and submission to God — Krishna consciousness.

Spiritual growth is everybody's right; Krishna consciousness is not just for the elite but for everybody. (Click here for the full article)

Special Opportunity From Mayapur
by Naru Gopal das, SMVS Vice Chairman
Posted September 5, 2009

Sri Mayapur Vikash Sangha (SMVS), is a project started by ISKCON Mayapur, which helps provide education, healthcare, and means of livelihood to the local dham vasis. Registered as an official NGO in West Bengal, this organization has been running for more than 10 years, receiving grants from funding agencies worldwide (including the United Nations).

The spiritual benefit that one receives from serving the devotees of the Lord has no limits. Lord Krsna Himself states in the Bhagavatam "mad bhakta puja abyadhika", which Srila Prabhupada translates as, "take it for granted, that if you worship My devotee, that is more than my devotional service". It was also the desire of our movement's spiritual grandfather, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur, that the local dham vasis receive such care and help. He himself donated land specifically for opening schools and hospitals. The current Bhaktivinod Institute, a primary and secondary school outside the ISKCON campus, was built on that land. the self-appointed director and vice-president...He submitted documents that made himself a director and temple vice-president (officer) of the Phoenix temple.

Briefly, during my tenure as Phoenix GBC, Radha Prana Prabhu and his good wife were exemplary and valuable devotees. They did much responsible service and faithfully served Srila Prabhupada's mission . I personally appointed him as vice-president, and he consistently acted, in difficult times, for the good of Srila Prabhupada's mission.

Janmastami Poem On YouTube

An 11-year-old girl, Amrita Geddam of Waukesha, Wisconsin, has written a beautiful poem ("Birth of the Destroyer of Darkness") told from the viewpoint of Krishna's father Vasudeva, on Krishna Janmastami. I have made a small video featuring this poem accompanied by images of Lord Krishna. The poem is uploaded on YouTube I invite all devotees to enjoy it. Here area few lines of the poem:

His skin was dark blue, a colour of the night sky,
yet softer than the softest of clouds.
His calming brown eyes glittered,
not because of the moonlight,
but because of His own divine grace.

Fighting On Srila Prabhupada's Side
by Madhu Pandit Dasa, President, ISKCON-Bangalore
Posted September 1, 2009

An address by Madhu Pandit Dasa on the occasion of Srila Prabhupada's Vyasa Puja on August 15th, 2009 (slightly edited for clarity)

Vysay Puja day is a great opportunity to share with all of Your Divine Grace's followers, admirers and disciples the glories of the inconceivable mercy that pours down from the spiritual master.

Srila Prabhupada, the very fact that I am surviving to serve Your Divine Grace in spite of continuous determined efforts by people in the garb of devotees to break our devotional service is nothing but your personal protection and mercy. You have said that preaching success bring enemies who create obstacles.

So as soon as you become successful, there will be many enemies. That is natural. That is the sign of success. (Room conversation with Srila Prabhupada, Nov 3rd, 1973, New Delhi)

You have also said that preaching success brings envy. Especially among close ones. You have cited the case of your own godbrothers. Looks like this is a rule of this world. (Click here for the full article)

In Tucson, as with many towns across the country, there is a "best of the city" publication put out each year informing its citizens of the best place to eat, take a day trip or go for adventure. Over the past 18 years Govinda's has won numerous awards centred around the delicious and popular prasadan restaurant, but we were surprised when this year's Best of Tucson results were published this week.

In the "Best City Excursion with the Kids" category it was noted that a walk down trendy 4th Avenue, complete with entertainment provided by the Hare Krishnas, was the best clean fun the city had to offer. (Click here for the full article)

New Varnashrama Book
by Niscala Devi Dasi
Posted September 28, 2009

"Varnashrama, the Eight Petalled Lotus" is not exactly a push for varnashrama in ISKCON. It is actually based on my great fear that we might, at some point in time, introduce varnashrama in ISKCON, but do it by simply labelling people. Such depersonalization of ISKCON and blanket categorization of individuals is the very antithesis of varnashrama under the same name and dress. The introduction of varnashrama must serve its purpose or it may become a useless shadow of the real thing, a substitution without light.

This book is the vision of varnashrama given by Srila Prabhupada in his instructions and his books. (Click here for the full article)

Historic Daytona Beach Rathayatra
by Dvijapriya dasi
Posted September 25, 2009

The first-ever Daytona Beach Rathayatra festival was celebrated on September 12, and in spite of ever-threatening rain, the parade turned out to be a blissful and well-attended affair. The festival was very nicely organized by Bhadra and Balavanta prabhus in conjunction with the Hindu Society of Daytona Beach, and was a huge success.

Jarati dasi once again skillfully prepared a sumptuous and delicious feast with help from her daughter and several volunteers at the Hindu cultural center. The cooking had to be done outside on large gas stoves, as the building had no cooking facilities. Nonetheless, many people were happily cutting and helping Jarati prabhu to prepare (it reminded us of the old New Vrindavan "pits" days!) The center's directors also served out a simple meal of chipped rice and sweets to help sustain the devotees until the big feast after the parade. (Click here for the full article)

Phoenix Temple Needs Mediation

I have followed very closely the articles written by Dasarath prabhu ("Romapada Swami Discovered Behind GBC "Change up" in Phoenix" [article deleted] and "Open Letter to Hari Vilas"), Hari Vilas prabhu ("The Other Side of the Phoenix Temple Issue" [article deleted]) and H.H. Hrdayananda Maharaj ("Clearing up a Misunderstanding"). In the interest of pleasing Srila Prabhupada and serving his mission, the resident deities and Vaishnavas, as well as to prevent Vaishnava offenses, I am wondering why the North American GBC is not bringing all these Vaishnavas together and bringing a win-win resolution to this ongoing management problem at the Phoenix temple.

Perhaps it is already happening, but from articles of Dasarath das and Hari Vilas das it seems there is an ongoing conflict which should be given immediate and urgent attention to take the temple to another level. (Click here for the full article)

Signs Should Help Preach Bhagavad-Gita
by Kamlesh Patel
Posted September 2, 2009

The ISKCON temple in Vallabh Vidyanagar (Gujarat, India) is boldly decorated with some verses from the Bhagavad-gita As It Is in both Gujarati and English. This is the first temple I have visited where a visitor will actually walk away from the temple likely knowing a verse or two from the Bhagavad-gita.

Some temple managers or presidents may believe that the more land and buildings the temple property contains, the more successful the temple is. Of course, this is nonsense. As Srila Prabhupada stated, the purpose of temples is to give spiritual knowledge, not to serve as a show of concrete, cement and stones. There are many opulent temples, but if after visiting a temple a visitor does not change his or her consciousness for the better, then what is the benefit of going to temples?

Only learning the teachings from the Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad-gita can change a person's consciousness for the better. (Click here for the full article)

Quantum Leap to Understanding
by G. S. Senan (Singapore)
Posted September 1, 2009

Responding to a letter I sent seven years ago to H.G. Adipurusa das, president of the ISKCON temple in Telok Intan, Malaysia, my friend Senthil das wrote to suggest that even advanced devotees might not be able to understand the Radha-bhava mood of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu.

Most of us, even devotees or so-called advanced devotees within the Hare Krishna movement, are only pretending, with grave consequences, to be devotees. Quoting shastra and acharyas, Srila Gaura Govinda Maharaj has warned us: “If you even think you are a devotee, you are definitely not.” It is my belief that all of ISKCON's problems result from the false belief that we are devotees or advanced devotees.

To avoid Mahaprabhu's vipralambha mood being disturbed unintentionally by people of innocent ignorance and sentimental feelings, we require total faith in the fully realized words of our gurudevas, of Srila Prabhupada and and of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur. Posted September 28, 2009

When we talk about love, some preachers in ISKCON have held a narrow-minded view, reserving their love for.Srila Prabhupada only, for Prabhupada and their guru or for other Hare Krishna devotees only. The truth is that Krishna is in everyone and that love to Krishna expresses itself in love towards all.

I hope this text, translated from a Hindi discourse by Ramsukhdas Swami, may help to broaden the minds of some devotees.

"How do we attain and increase love? I will share with you what I have heard from saints. If you desire God's love, then love all beings. Let it be such that no being is in the least bit hurt because of you. Let all be at peace; let all attain salvation. Let all be benefited; (Click here for the full article)

Remembering Sadaputa (Richard L. Thompson)

Tomorrow marks one year since the passing of His Grace Sadaputa Prabhu. To honor this occasion I have decided to share some of my memories of him.

About 10 years ago, after finishing my master's degree in astrophysics, I took a gap-year and travelled. While backpacking around the world that year, I discovered Prabhupada's books and I soon began to associate with devotees. The devotees would usually, upon discovering my scientific background, tell me about Sadaputa Prabhu, and guide me to his books. This happened practically everywhere I went. "What do you do?" the devotee would ask. "Oh, I am a scientist" I would reply. The next line, usually spoken very enthusiastically, always went something like "Did you know we have this great scientist in ISKCON called Sadaputa dasa, Richard L. Thompson? Looking for Service at An ISKCON Farm in India
by Radha Vinod das
Posted September 7, 2009

My wife and I are seriously interested in serving at an ISKCON farm project in India. We don't need any maintainance, just a room with an attached bath and kitchen. I have been serving in ISKCON temples for 29 years. We would also be interested in purchasing a property close to an established ISKCON farm project. My wife is an economist with a masters degree in accounting. Her family has knowledge of bee keeping and organic gardening. If you feel we could be of help to your project, kindly contact me as soon as possible.

All dresses in this ad are brand new and never used. I am not certain of the fabric in any of the dresses but it is possibly silk. All the dresses are very beautiful and the camera can not pick up the total beauty of the outfits. I am selling these dresses because they are too large for the deities I serve.

Prices do not include shipping. Paypal is preferred payment method but can accept money orders. Please contact me at kumudavana@aol.com. Thank you.

This pink set of Radha Krishna outfits were made by a pujari at the Vrndavana temple. The set includes two blouses, dhoti, chaddar, skirt and dupatta. Also included are two beautiful crowns. The length of the dhoti is 7" from waist to hem and the length of the skirt is 9" from waist to hem. (Click here for the full article)

Open Letter to Hari Vilas
by Dasarath das

I am surprised that an Iskcon GBC would submit statements about me over the internet, most of which are baseless and some even defamatory in content. The onus is on you to credibly prove your statements and all of their accusations about me contained in your article posted on "Chakra", August 26th, 2009. Your proofs of information should not include your personal beliefs or innuendos. If indeed you cannot supply the proof to all your claims, I would believe that you owe me a public apology.

To be fair, honest, and accountable, where did the persons whose emails you included as "factual evidence", get their information? Where is the concrete evidence and irrefutable proof to all their claims? I also would like you to disclose to me the names of these persons whose emails you included in your article, "The other Side of The Phoenix Temple History". All this is in support and continuance of your own promoted theme, "just to set the record straight in Phoenix".

Before we begin, I must also say that I cannot recollect in Iskcon history, an "Iskcon GBC official" writing to the world on such a widely read internet website, another vaishnava's supposed fall downs, mistakes, faults, intention of his actions, service or disservice.
