First Ratha Yatra in Shippensburg, Pa
by Ortrun Gates
Posted September 29, 2008

The first ever Ratha Yatra was held on September 27th in Shippensburg, PA at the home of Hemagaura and Ortrun Gates. Local friends and devotees gathered to pull the cart around our own Govardhan Hill in the side yard. For those in attendance who did not know the origins of the festival, Pariksit Prabhu gave an explanation how the deities manifested, to the delight of everyone present. Sadly M. Kaulini dasi was unable to attend because of her health.

After many days of sunshine, it started to rain on Friday and we were concerned about our festival. We decided to go ahead rain or shine and, just in case, purchased many rain coats from the local Dollar Store. (Click here for the full article)

Europe's First State-Funded Hindu School

by Riazat Butt
Posted September 20, 2008

GUARDIAN NEWS SERVICE: Europe's first state-funded school for Hindus, which receives its spiritual guidance from the Hare Krishna movement, opened in London amid continued concern about the divisive nature of faith schools.

Krishna-Avanti primary school, in the north-west borough of Harrow, home to about a quarter of the UK's Hindu population, is welcoming 30 children to its temporary base at Little Stanmore primary school. The school will gradually increase in size until 2014, when it will have filled places for 236 pupils, including a nursery.

However, pupils will have to wait until next September to enjoy their new GBP10m building, which will have a meditation garden, an amphitheatre for outside teaching and eco-friendly innovations such as a grass roof. (Click here for the full article)

Live Streaming Nectar

The Internet is an enabling technology. It enables us to receive emails from all over the world; it enables us to read articles posted on Danadavats.com. We are also able to watch videos of a Japa workshop by Mahatma dasa. We can download the video and play it later on an mp4 player, a device that lets us listen to music, display images and play video. The Internet allows us to log in to the 'Gita Room,' a virtual on line classroom where we can join others on line in a class about the Bhagavad Gita.

I guess I shouldn't have been surprised when I saw the notice that His Holiness Hridayanda Goswami would be giving a morning class at Sri Sri Radha Gopinatha Mandir in Sydney, (Australia) (Click here for the full article)

First Northern Virginia Ratha Yatra
by ISKCON DC
Posted September 22, 2008

LORD JAGANNATHA, LORD BALADEVA & SUBHADRA

First Northern Virginia Ratha Yatra was hosted on 13th September, 2008 within Centreville Day Parade by ISKCON DC. On auspicious day of Ganesh Chathurthi and Haridas Thakur's disappearance day, hundreds of people witnessed chanting of Hare Krishna. Lord Chaitanya (Lord Krishna's incarnation) has predicted that His name will be chanted in every town and corner of the world. Due to Srila Prabhupada's hardship, this prediction is certainly manifesting every day in different corner of the world. It was a great day, with clear skies. Weather was the most perfect. Previous day, a huge thunderstorm was predicted and there were good chances of parade being cancelled. Centreville parade organizer Cheryl mentioned that weather must have been cleared, because Hare Krishnas would be joining this year! Last year's parade was cancelled due to bad weather. With Thanks to Mr. May...
by Niscala dasi
Posted September 20, 2008

As a kid I used to enjoy joining up dots and creating pictures. Today I am doing the same thing with our philosophy and still getting much enjoyment. The dots are intriguing points of gaudiya vaisnava philosophy, such as the only truly free thing we can do is to surrender to the will of God. This point and others, such as that we are inconceivably one with and different from God, can be found dotted throughout various literatures on the subject of the absolute truth and of its manifestations of divine love as we experience it at ground zero.

It is a truly wonderful experience to break out of the sectarian stranglehold of reading only "our" books and discover that God can speak through anyone, and His voice is always sweet both to the mind and the heart. (Click here for the full article)

New Hare Krishna Temple Opens in Seattle

by Janet I. Tu for The Seattle Times (USA) on 23 Aug 2008
Posted September 2, 2008

Image: Jim Bates Once based in a run-down three-bedroom house, the Seattle area's Hare Krishnas now gather at their spacious new Vedic Cultural Center in Sammamish. The colorful $4.5 million temple, with marble floors, has 12,200 square feet.

The giant pink wedding cake of a building stands in bold contrast to nearby houses painted polite Northwest shades of beige and taupe.

Naresh Bhatt beams as he gives a tour of this new temple in Sammamish. He chose the colors. Happy, blissful colors, he says.

Inside, as the service begins, Bhatt joins his wife, two daughters and many others - most of Indian descent - who chant exuberantly: "Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare." (Click here for the full article)

Choice

Am I eternally fallen,
or eternally liberated?
Am I this flesh and blood and senses?
Or am I spirit instead?

Do I have voice in my existence,
or is life determined by fate?
Can I do anything to change this
roller coaster ride of love and hate?

Each day I awake to a new world.
But my neighbor knows nothing of mine.
Our perceptions to us are the true world.
We'll be friends or enemies in time.

Must I act according to this body,
or choose to completely rise above.?
Is survival only for the fittest?
Or can I lift my sister with love? (Click here for the full article)

More About Miso
by Vrindavan dasa
Posted September 6, 2008

As a follow-up to my letter "A Helpful Tip for Vaisnavas About Japanese Miso Broth", here are a few new points which I have discovered about miso broth for Vaisnavas:

I have now learned that a very important and very interesting point about dry miso, is that its high salt concentration prevents any alcohol production in that dry, highly concentrated state. The terminology for this phenomenon is "salt denatured of alcohol". So this means, that regardless of whether you keep your dry miso in the fridge or on a shelf, even for months at a time, it will never have any alcohol content because it is automatically denatured by salt in this form.

In fact, this is especially true of the longer fermented misos (1, 2, 3 years or longer). In general, the greater the length of time that a miso is left to ferment, (Click here for the full article)
