Clueless
by Arati devi dasi
Posted September 28, 2005

I'm writing this letter to express my opinion about misunderstandings in ISKCON about gays and lesbians and the way they are described by some senior devotees. I would also like to express my appreciation for devotees like Hridayananda Maharaga, Bhakti Tirtha Swami, and others, who were intelligent enough to see the errors in their judgments toward gays in the past, and who changed their vision in a positive direction. Being able to change and adjust your own mistakes is a quality that is essential for staying in the spiritual process and making advancement. I consider these devotees very elevated. Also I wanted to thank my friend Amara who started this discussion and who did a lot for us over the years. In my town we had meetings for gay and bisexual devotees in the last two years and we realized how important it was to come together and to talk about our experiences, but also to talk about Krishna and how to serve best in Krishna conciousness. Friend Looking for Friend Devotee
by Salagrama-sila dasi (ssd)
Posted September 25, 2005

My name is Salagrama-sila dasi, formerly known as Shyama. I'm writing on behalf of my godmother, Karen Civitate, who is looking for a devotee named Radha-Kunda das. Radha-kunda prabhu is a disciple of Srila Prabhupada. He was living in the Los Angeles/Badger, CA, area for many years. He has two young adult children named Gita dd and Gaurachandra das. The last time I saw his face was on the Avatar Studio's production of Simple Temple, filmed at and about the Chowpatty, Mumbai project in India. Radhakunda prabhu was one of the many Prabhupada's disciples who attended a grand festival there (in the video). There were pounds and pounds of flowers being thrown all of the devotees and Their Lordships within the temple room... (Click here for the full article)

Seats Are Still Available for the MIHE VTE Bhakti-sastri and Bhaktivaibhava Courses Starting on November 12
by Janmastami dasa
Posted September 22, 2005

On January 6, 1976, Srila Prabhupada directed the GBC by letter to implement a graduated system of sastric examinations to ensure that his disciples were carefully studying his books. Srila Prabhupada could understand that due to insufficient sastric knowledge, some of his followers were improperly representing him, others were falling down, and many were unsteady in their service. He hoped to remedy these problems by encouraging the systematic study of his books.

Please Register Online: Due to an exceptionally qualified line up of facilitators this year, we are receiving an unprecedented response from devotees registering online. We still have seats available and are encouraging devotees to register online ASAP at www.mihe.info.

The Gulf Coast - As people everywhere send prayers and aid to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, teams of volunteers have mobilized, determined to get freshly made meals to everyone in the Gulf Coast area who needs them. Child Protection In Every Temple
by Madhava das
Posted September 6, 2005

I have just recently found out that there is not a child protection office in every temple throughout Iskcon. Some may ask what is so important about having such an office. The simple fact is that if your local temple or farm community has a cow protection office but not a child protection office then in so many words they are saying that they value the cows more then the children, especially with some of the current issues going on. Remembering Aniruddha
by Babhru das
Posted September 5, 2005

When I heard earlier this week of Aniruddha prabhu's passing, I recalled this story, which I have often told in many settings:

As Srila Prabhupada was leaving after a visit to Honolulu in May of '74, a few of us stayed in the airport terminal with him, while most of the devotees stayed out on the sidewalk and kept a kirtan going. While Satsvarupa Maharaj was reading ISKCON-related newspaper clippings, Srila Prabhupada interrupted him: "I hear Aniruddha is here in Hawaii, but he has not come to see me. Do you know?" Hurricane Katrina
by Madhuryalilananda dasi
Posted September 3, 2005

Is anyone planning any relief prasadam distribution? You don't have to go to New Orleans. There are plenty of other places to go: Biloxi, Gulfport, Waveland, Bay St Louis, Long Beach, Slidell, Picayune, Covington etc. The list of possible locations is very long. Just stop anywhere a long I-10 or I-59 and there will be people that need help. The little communities will be forgotten by the big relief agencies. A van or truck with rice, beans, some cookers and propane would be welcome anywhere. Be sure to bring gas for your van.

  More Gurus Desperately Needed
by Garuda dasa
Posted September 30, 2005

When touring south India, Lord Chaitanya instructed everyone He met to “Be guru and save the land.”

In every locality I visit, I see senior devotees who have been steady and fixed up for many years. Because of their vast knowledge and sincere devotion these great souls (whether married, in the body of a minority race, or female covering) they are attracting many new people who reverently approach them for teachings and the dust of their feet.

Remembering how ISKCON’s dwindling members suffered through the difficult years and how we’ve had to wait so long for our leaders to mature, why can’t our current servant-leaders offer proper respect to their Godbrothers and Godsisters by recognizing officially their ability to locally initiate new disciples? Reply To Solai Regarding His Article Titled 'the Long Term Impact Of Urbanizing Mayapur'
by Hemagauri devi dasi
Posted September 26, 2005

Click Here to read Solai's article.

The Mayapur Temple Project is an attempt to fulfill a divine vision of Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur's, so the ISKCON devotees will probably not agree to call the project off. Perhaps Solai prabhu can utilize his knowledge and expertise in geology and ecology to help devise a more viable city plan.

Rather than trying to recreate a simple pastoral past that is changing (with or without us) all around the world, we can use our knowledge of material sciences (including understanding the modes of material nature) and spiritual science to develop, preserve and maintain these wonderful holy sites of pilgrimage.

Why a Temporary Hospice?
by Harideva Das
Posted September 5, 2005

There is an unclear letter circulating that asks for donations of $12 each month to start a temporary hospice in Vrindaban. Does any one who know the validity of this project and why it is only temporary? It seems to me that a hospice should be permanent thing. Don't we already have a hospice that the devotees are building? Is this the same hospice, or a different organization? Can anyone shed light on this? My first impulse was that, for such a small amount each month I would be more than willing to help. Then I began thinking, how can $12 help? Isn't hospicing expensive? Does anyone know where to find out more about this project? This sounds important so I don't want to write it off, but I need to know more.

Thank you,

Your aspiring servant,

Diversity In Gender
by Amara dasa
Posted September 4, 2005

Sri Nandanandana's recent article is a nice summary of the general role of women in Vedic society, but his description is just that--a general summary. There are always exceptions to any rule and we cannot make blanket statements that all women are, or must be, one certain way. In reality there are unlimited types of women just like there are unlimited types of men. Diversity and natural variegatedness are critical aspects of Hinduism, but Sri Nandanandana fails to mention or allow for any gender diversity in his article. (Click here for the full article)

by Tamohara das - Director, ISKCON Central Office of Child Protection
Posted September 10, 2005

I was very pleased to see the recent article by Madhava das, that called for the establishment of child protection teams at every temple. The Child Protection Office agrees that this should be the number one priority in our international efforts to rid our Society of child abuse. An effective local child protection team is our critical first line of defense in child protection. Trained team members work to prevent abuse, and are also prepared to quickly and professionally deal with abuse, should it occur. Team members learn how and when to report to legal authorities, how to give aid to victims and families, and how to interact with the Child Protection Office to deal with the abusers. For pictures of the Utah Janmastami celebration go to the web site, Click Here.

This year's festival was record breaking, not only for the number of people who came, and the donations offered in kalasha sponsorships, but in terms of enthusiasm. I noted that never before in Utah history has the chanting been so thunderous as out on the verandah doing pradakshina with the Ratha (Chariot). We were all delighted with taking the new hand carved 12 foot high Ratha on her maiden voyage, and with Radha, Krishna seated there for the first time. Getting out of the temple room, still on the temple premises, but on the acoustically friendly verandah, sparked the best kirtan I ever experienced in Utah.

Posted September 2, 2005

The Harvest Workshop began on Friday, August 19. Attendees came from Columbus, Ohio, Marietta, Ohio, and Baltimore, Maryland as well as the local area. For some of the attendees this was their first association with followers of Srila Prabhupada, and for others, it was their first visit to the ISCOWP farm. Workshops were held on drying and canning vegetables from the garden, ox training, and garden production. At the same time next year, we will again hold the Harvest Workshop. We will write up a comprehensive report of the Harvest Workshop for the next ISCOWP News, but in the mean time, here is a note from Shelda, one of the attendees.
