Madhava’s Band Brings Krishna Rock to India’s Got Talent
by Madhava Smullen for ISKCON News on 14 Oct 2011, Reposted from news.iskcon.com
Posted October 21, 2011

The Band

This summer, when 35 million people tuned in to India’s Got Talent—which features Bollywood star judges and is hailed as Asia’s biggest talent show—they probably didn’t expect to see a group of devotees in dhotis and saris, chanting Hare Krishna.

But people warmed to ISKCON devotee rock band “Madhava’s” quickly, sending them all the way to the IGT finale, where they reached third place out of thousands of contestants.

For the band, it was both a humbling and educational experience, and a chance to deliver Krishna’s name to as many people as possible.

“Five out of the seven band members met while in engineering college in our home town of Chandigargh, Punjab,” (Click here for the full article)

Philadelphia Ratha Yatra Report to Srila Prabhupada
by Philadelphia Ratha Yatra Steering Committee
Posted October 24, 2011

“We're fortunate to have what is probably the most beautiful parade route and festival site on the east coast. The most enlivening feature of Ratha Yatra for me is the energetic, creative, and responsible participation of so many of our congregation members who fantastically organized everything from the fleet of children's Ratha Yatra carts in the parade to the various workshops on yoga, meditation, and kirtan at the festival sites. I'm especially pleased by the huge participation we had in producing what many festival-goers claimed to be the best Ratha Yatra feast they've ever tasted." – Ravindra Svarupa prabhu, TP

Communications report

To alert as many Philadelphians as possible to the Jagannatha Ratha Yatra Festival, the RY communications team took the campaign to the streets, having our best graphic designers created powerful images of Lord Jagannatha. (Click here for the full article)

Lamp Offering at ISKCON, Ludhiana
by Bhakta Kaplish
Posted October 21, 2011

ISKCON Ludhiana celebrated arrival of auspicious Kartik month with ecstatic Kirtana, lamp offering to Lord Damodar, recitation of Damodarastakam prayer and discourses. Devotees offered lights to Their Lordship after Gaura Aarti. HG Rajsuya Das, Temple President, told Lamp offering will continue for whole month of Kartika and said that since this month is very dear to Krishna by performing austerities, or restraining ones sense gratification and performing activities to please the senses of the Lord, one becomes very dear to the Krishna. As Satya yuga is the best of yugas, as the vedas are the best of scriptures, as ganga is the best of rivers, so kartika is the best of months, the most dear to Krishna.

Fakir Mohan Prabhu Needs Assistant
by Krsna Chandra dasi
Posted October 13, 2011

The life of Fakir Mohan Prabhu is an extraordinary example of dedication and humility. Even as a child he always ran to the temple, so that in his young age his parents realized that he was made for devotional life, and they offered him to a temple. He comes from a high Brahmin family, and his Guru initiated him with the name "Fakir", the Muslim name for "sadhu". He is always laughing: "Yes, I am just a Fakir, an insignificant beggar."

He is a lifelong brahmacari. Although he studied Sanskrit, is a professor emeritus of Utkal University and published more than 35 books, he stayed a very simple, loving Vaishnava. He was never part of an institution or of a particular group or mission, but has so much love for every soul. Although he was very close to many intimate disciples of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur and other famous Vaishnavas, he never initiated anyone. The songs of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur are deeply rooted in his heart, and he is gives such joyful Hari-katha that the hearts of the devotees will melt. He has suffered five heart-attacks but still travels, and his enthusiasm is never-ending. (Click here for the full article)

  Vidyabhusana Project
by Dr. Demian Martins
Posted October 29, 2011

The Vidyabhusana Project has been launched to collect, preserve and translate the works of Sri Baladeva Vidyabhusana, to whom Srila Prabhupada dedicated his Bhagavad-gita As It Is. The intellectual genius of Sri Vidyabhusana is equal in all respects to that of Sri Jiva Gosvami, Sri Ramanuja Acarya, Sri Vedanta Desika or any of the greatest philosophers, and it is most unfortunate that even among vaisnava circles his works do not yet occupy the exalted position they deserve. He not only left an outstanding philosophical legacy, but also important works on grammar, poetics, literature, prosody and dramaturgy.

Almost 250 years have passed since Sri Vidyabhusana departed from this world, and only a few serious attempts have been made to preserve his works. In the first half of the last century, with great hardship Haridas das Babaji from Navadvip and Krishnadas Babaji from Radhakunda collected manuscripts from all over India and managed to publish a good number of them. The End of an Era at New Vrindaban’s Palace Rose Garden
by New Vrindaban Communications
Posted October 21, 2011

On September 28, New Vrindaban held a retirement party for Betty Hickey who, since 1985, has cultivated the Palace Rose Garden. The garden has over one hundred varieties of roses and over 850 rose plants, and attracts thousands of pilgrims and visitors every year.

Besides cultivating roses, Betty has cultivated hundreds of devotees and visitors with her warm heart, gentle nature, and no-nonsense attitude. “I have made so many wonderful friendships over the years,” said Betty at her retirement party.

Betty was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, and has lived in the local community her entire life. “My entire family – my parents, my brother Bob, everyone – was always friendly with the devotees in New Vrindaban,” (Click here for the full article)

Feed the World Day in Tucson
by Sandamani dasi
Posted October 19, 2011

The weather was cooling down, a faint fall aroma in the air. It was time for our 10th annual Feed the World Festival on Monday, October 4th. Filling the courtyard were health booths, holistic medicines, massage and an assortment of alternative practitioners. All set to the tune of continuous kirtan and prasad distribution.

Why the collaboration? All were united with the aim of bringing awareness to world hunger and the many subtle reasons behind it. Foremost is to adopt a plant-based diet and refocus on our spiritual nature. To bring about these two goals, Govinda’s of Tucson who is entering its 19th year of serving delicious prasadam to the community, puts on this yearly event.

“It’s the simple program Srila Prabhupada gave us,” said Bhakta Geno, the event coordinator, ”but with a new twist to attract a wider range of people and connect them with a global theme. (Click here for the full article)

Moscow Temple Expropriated; Help and Prayers Needed
by Jaya Madhava das (Moscow)
Posted October 13, 2011

I would like to urgently request the worldwide community of devotees to pray for the Moscow ISKCON Temples and for its devotees. On Friday, September 30 the devotees were served with an official notice of eviction, and they will be required to vacate the property by November 30.

The land had originally been provided to the devotees by the Northern Administrative Zone of the Government of Moscow Region as a replacement home when the Bhagavaya Temple location had been destroyed by officials to build offices and apartments in 2004. Now the current location in Dinamo is also in serious jeopardy.

The Moscow ISKCON Temple is in very real danger of being closed down by the local Moscow Government officials, the legal owners of the property. This is a total shock to the Russian devotees, who had thought that the local government would have allowed them more time to prepare for building and relocating to their future purpose-built temple. The effect will be (Click here for the full article)

Beautiful Building Lot for Sale in Alachua Florida
by Lalita Sakhi dasi
Posted October 7, 2011

These days its less expensive to build a NEW house then to buy a fixer-upper! What to speak of the resale value! We're selling one of the last beautiful properties left in Alachua, Florida. It's a nice rectangular lot measuring 100 x 138 ft. (Total = 13,800 sq. ft. (1,280 sq. m.) or 1/3 acre; composed of two lots: one is 100 x 100 and the other is 100 x 38) vastu-suitable building lot facing east. Its all one lot though. At the end of a paved cul-de-sac (which is great for kids!) and also has sidewalks. The lot has seven large, beautiful trees and only forest views at the rear and side.

No site work will be needed; the lot is ready to build. There are mostly new homes built down the street. It's a very safe neighborhood, with some devotees living nearby too. Walking distance to Santa Fe High School, 4-1/2 miles (7.25 km) to ISKCON Raman Reti temple, and 1 mile (2.2 km) to downtown Alachua. (Click here for the full article)
