Radhakunda Bahulastami Lamp Festival
by Devika Prana das
Posted October 30, 2010

Why is Radha Kunda so exalted? The lake (Kunda) is so exalted because it belongs to Srimati Radharani, who is the most beloved object of Sri Krsna. Among all the Gopis, She is the most beloved. Similarly Sri Radha Kunda is also described by great sages as the lake that is as dear to Sri Krsna as Sri Radha Herself. Indeed, Radha Kunda is rarely attained even by great personalities fully engaged in devotional service.

Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura writes in this connection that Sri Radha Kunda is the most select place for those interested in advancing their devotional service in the wake of the lady friends (Sakhis and Manjaris) of Sri Radharani.

Srila Rupa Goswami recommends that even if one cannot live permanently at Radha Kunda, one should at least bathe as many times as possible, or do some seva to the Kunda. Bahulastami, the appearance day of Sri Sri Radha Kunda and Shyama Kunda, is an opportunity for such bathing and seva. If anyone is interested to do seva after the bathing, we have accomodation here (Click here for the full article)

Because Krsna is a thief, we have got some hope! We have tried our best to construct a boundary line all around our heart, that no God consciousness can enter, but as a thief Krsna will enter, and that is our solace: that one day, He may stealthily enter as a thief into our heart, and capture it. Only that is our hope.

Where Did Srila Prabhupada Say It?
by Prishnigarbha dasi
Posted October 23, 2010

One translation Srila Prabhupada gave for the Maha Mantra went something like: "Oh Lord, Oh Energy of the Lord, I have fallen into the material world. Please save me. Please help me come back to you." Does anyone know where the correct and/or full quote could be found? I know it starts and ends with those two sentences. I'm a little unclear about the middle part. Any help is very appreciated.

Like to help ISKCON develop into all that Prabhupada wants it to be? Be part of the changes you would like to see! For the last 12 years, the Mayapur Institute (MI) has been educating mostly younger devotees in Prabhupada's mood and mission as found in his books. As life changing as the MI's courses are, to make them truly revolutionary, we need the attendance of devotees like you to:

- share your life's experience applying the sastric lessons learned in class,

- mentor the younger devotees as they try to apply the lessons in their own lives, and

- tell relevant stories and participate in impromptu skits to help make the lessons come alive (Click here for the full article)

Bhaktivedanta Hospice Opens in Vrindavan

by Deena Bandhu das, Reposted from ISKCON News
Posted October 16, 2010

In the 1990s, Arca Vigraha dasi, a famous artist from South Africa, built a house in Vrindavana — Krishna's birthplace in India — to do her artwork. But soon thereafter she discovered that she had cancer, which proved to be terminal. As well as her guru Giriraj Swami, many other senior devotees, such as B. B. Govinda Swami, Bhurijana das, Kesava Bharati das Goswami, Sivarama Swami and Tamal Krishna Goswami, would visit her and give her their association and encouragement in her last days.

Arca Vigraha prabhu felt fortunate to have a house in Vrindavana where these devotees could come and assist her, and she wanted other devotees to have the same opportunity. She expressed her desire to Giriraj Swami that a "Back-to-Godhead Clinic" be created in Vrindavana where devotees could leave their bodies in a sublime spiritual atmosphere, supported by competent medical care. Giriraj Swami took this request to heart and gradually developed the idea of building a hospice in Vrindavana for this purpose. (Click here for the full article)

The "Rascal Editors" conversation, which took place in Vrindavan on June 22, 1977, has been known to Hare Krishna devotees for more than thirty years. And for more than thirty years, most devotees have been wrong about what mistake he had found. In 1976, some revisions were made to a portion of the First Canto that included the verse that kicked off the conversation: SB 1.2.5. It's interesting to note that by June 1977, the time of the conversation, the revised First Canto was available in many centers, but apparently not at the Krishna-Balaram Mandir. So Tamal Krishna Goswami and the others were reading from the old version, which contained the mistake in the word-by-word meanings that had already been corrected by the the BBT.

Glorious Departure of Harshita Devi Dasi
by Radhakrishna das Brahmachari, Ludhiana, India
Posted October 8, 2010

By the desire of Sri Krishna, my maternal grandmother, Harshita devi dasi, passed away unexpectedly at 67 in Vallabh-Vidyanagar, Gujarat, India on Friday, October 1. Both she and her husband, Ramamurti das Adhikari, had been initiated by Srila Prabhupada in March 1977 in Kenya. The couple established two ISKCON temples: one in Mombasa, Kenya in the 1970s and the second in Vallabh-Vidyanagar, Gujarat in 1985.

My grandmother had had bronchitis and extremely low blood pressure; due to a partial heart failure (pre-angina for the third time in a week) she passed away in full conciousness but very smoothly without even knowing that she was departing.

At the last moment she told the doctors and nurses in her intensive-care unit that Lord Krishna in the form of Srinathaji (the deity of Sri Madhavendra Puri, and traditionally worshipped in Gujarat) (Click here for the full article)

You are cordially invited to the

Govardhana Puja Festival

(Annakuta Mahotsava)

which will be celebrated at

ISKCON-Murari Sevaka Farm

Sunday, November 7, 2010

Starting at 2:00 PM

We want this Govardhana Puja festival to initiate the rejuvenation of a brilliant future for Murari…a future of acceptance, tolerance and loving relationships with all devotees. Murari can flourish as we work together to fulfill this important element of Srila Prabhupada’s vision. We invite all the Vaisnava community to take part in and be part of this timely endeavor. We want to have our dependence on the natural resources, cows, each other… and of course…. Krsna…..and really set the example of “simple living and high thinking”….To do this we must eagerly study Srila Prabhupada’s books, discuss, and perform the Yuga Dhama of continuous singing and chanting Krsna’s names. To this end I am committed. The obstacles will be reduced to nil….and Lord Caitanya will be pleased. (Click here for the full article)

Chronic Fatigue

Posted October 14, 2010

This post is in response to a request made by Rohini Priya dasi (Help Needed for Chronic Fatigue) I have had CFS/ME for about 30 years and I can relate to your concern about this mysterious and debilitating condition. Over the years I have tried different ways of eating in an effort to get back on my feet. By changing my eating habits I have begun to feel a lot better (between 50-90% improvement). I have found that by eating only raw food (prasadam) has helped more than anything else that I have tried. I tried to eat about 50% raw and it helped, but going 100% raw worked best for me. Fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts. I won't go into too much detail here, but if anybody wants to contact me I'll be glad to help as much as I can. (Click here for the full article)

Passing of Sri Padmavati Dasi, 105
by Visakha Devi
Posted October 30, 2010

I just returned today from my trip to Vrindaban Dham. I always visit Imlitala temple, which was established by Srimad Bhakti Saranga Goswami (my Param-guru Maharaj) and have made it a point to visit Sri Padmavati devi dasi, who has been living there for many years.

A few years back she had a stroke and was unable to care for herself. The disciples of Srimad Bhakti Pramode Puri Maharaj have been giving her round-the-clock care. I just saw Mataji last week, and she had been able to communicate with me requesting that she wanted to eat rasgullas. I thought it was funny when she'd said to me in Bengali that she was dying and that she wanted to eat rasgullas.

Today, on Monday, October 25, she left her body peacefully (Click here for the full article)

Realizations From Mayapur Sastra Course
by Yasoda Saci devi dasi
Posted October 21, 2010

In the beginning of my devotional career, I did not have much devotee sanga, but for over nine years I read Prabhupada's books on my own — first as a student, and then while working. Like most new devotees, the challenges the material energy would thrust into my life were often overwhelming.

I had major breakthroughs in facing these challenges, however, in coming to Mayapur and enrolling in the Mayapur Institute's Bhakti-sastri course. The course facilitators placed a high priority upon applying our philosophy in our day-to-day living, which equipped me with the tools to more competently deal with these challenges.

In times of difficulty, I learned how to see Krsna's loving hand behind the events that led me into these challenging situations. I began to understand that through these challenging experiences Krsna was simply purifying me and helping me come to Him. When the material energy would intrude into my space, (Click here for the full article)

Sam Harris Does It Again
by Swami B.V. Tripurari
Posted October 15, 2010

Sam Harris, The Moral Landscape
Free Press: 2010, 304pp. ISBN 1439171211

Sam Harris has done it again. Years ago when I glanced at his bestselling The End of Faith at Borders, I just happened to open to his section on mysticism. There in a few paragraphs he differentiated mysticism from religion: Religion is a belief/faith, and mysticism is rational. I appreciated what he was trying to say, but really, Sam, mysticism is transrational. It picks up where good reasoning leaves off. In other words it takes us above reasoning, unlike mere belief, which can often take us below the realm of reason into the serendipitous superstitious.

Harris is a rational mystic in belief but not in experience. He does not believe in the metaphysical claims of the mystics, but he can't help but acknowledge that he believes that their experience of expanded consciousness and contentment — bliss — is desirable and that such a belief is reasonable. “Are you crazy,” the CBS news reporter asked me, “opening your restaurant for free and inviting the public?” “Maybe,” I said, “but our philosophy teaches us that no one should be hungry within a ten-mile radius of our centers. And if one follows a non-violent life style, including abstaining from animal slaughter, the world would be a much better place.” The reporter conducted the interview for about five minutes before going on to film the various health-related booths and then the kirtan party. After that, he indulged his senses in tasting the attractive six-course vegan meal.

Over 400 people came to Govinda’s on Monday, Sept 27th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The booths showcased alternative healing arts, such as reflexology, iridology, therapeutic massage, and chiropractics. (Click here for the full article)

Devotees Remember Hladini Prabhu
by New Vrindaban Communications
Posted October 4, 2010

Sunday, October 3, is the 20th anniversary of the day on which Hladini devi dasi was brutally gunned down by an extra-judicial firing squad in war-torn Liberia in western Africa. The death squad arrived at the Hare Krishna temple in the capital city of Monrovia in the early morning hours, and ordered the devotees to come out. Seven devotees, five men and two women, exited the temple and filed into the waiting jeep.

They were driven a short distance to the Sturton Bridge, where the devotees were forced out at gunpoint and herded onto the sand next to the river. The leader announced that only the men would be killed. Thus Hladini, a woman, knew the war criminals had not planned to kill her.

As the leader raised his weapon to fire the first execution volley, Hladini leapt forward and attacked him with her bare hands. She shouted: "How dare you kill the devotees of Krishna? Better you kill me than kill them!" Hladini was the first to be shot.

Hladini had been born on January 16, 1949. Her parents gave her the name Linda Jury. Later, she received the name Hladini devi dasi from her beloved Guru Maharaj, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the Founder-Acarya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). (Click here for the full article)

Balkan Harinama Tour a Great Success
by Mohan das, Karlovac, Croatia
Posted October 4, 2010

Harinama in Ulcinj, Montenegro

It is almost a month since our 2010 Harinam tour finished, this year's being the largest and "craziest" tour so far. No one had tried a tour on this scale before; even we thought at the beginning that we might have bitten off too much, but somehow we all managed with Krishna's grace.

We had some amazing numbers. The tour lasted over two months, beginning with the first harinam on June 29 in Otocac and finishing in Sibenik on September 1. We divided the tour into three phases, playing in 57 cities located in 7 states, and performed 84 Harinams. Twenty devotees from three continents, including three Srila Prabhupada disciples, travelled with us, whilst 50 more devotees joined in at least one Harinam, for a total audience of half a million.

Traversing a whopping 10,000 km (6,200 miles) in total — almost as far as from Karlovac to India and back — we visited Trieste, Italy and Gevgelija, Macedonia, two towns 1,600 km (1,000 miles) apart. (Click here for the full article)
