Veggie Patty Recipe
by Niscala dasi
Posted October 27, 2008

This has only really really healthy stuff in it and it is absolutely delish. It has calcium from the sesame seeds; anti-cancer stuff from the cabbage; protein, iron and so on from the beans and lentils. It is pretty much a balanced meal, and very quick to make, and you can freeze the patties and they will last for ages. None of the ingredients are expensive either.

  • 2 cups of dried lentils, soaked for 6 hours or more (this is optional, you can just use kidney beans but they will be a little too soft, you can also vary the amount of this or any other ingredient)

Dusshera At Gita-Nagari
by Acarya dasa
Posted October 25, 2008

True Story: My wife answered the phone at Gita-nagari last week and one Indian man was speaking very excitedly about the notice posted at his place of employment. He said, "Is it true that you are burning Ravana?" My wife replied yes and started telling him about the whole festival. He interrupted and said that he was very offended. He was from South India and explained that in his community, Ravana was god and thought that we were very offensive to burn his worshippable deity. After a few more angry words and empty threats, he hung up. (Click here for the full article)

With Thanks to Mr. May... (Part Two)
by Niscala dasi
Posted October 15, 2008

This essay is in gratitude to Gerald May, whose book "Will and Spirit" delineates pitfalls to all who seek on the spiritual path. Reaching across the sectarian divisions between us, he arrives at the core of spirituality, our common experience of God and our hunger for His unconditional love.

Love

On the testimony of scripture and saint, sadhu and sastra, May proposes that all love is sourced in God and is expressed, however deficiently, through human channels. Therefore, we cannot deny the value of interpersonal relationships, even while at the same time we realize their limitation, specifically the inability to satisfy our deepest craving for unconditional love. Re-Opening the Windows to the Spiritual World
by Madhava Smullen

In a few years, the windows to the spiritual world could be closed forever. Unless something is done now.

That's what veteran BBT artist Dhriti Dasi realized when she saw several of her original paintings lying neglected in temples or private homes around the world. "It's an awful feeling, after Srila Prabhupada, the BBT and I put in so many years of work and so much money to produce them," she says.

Dhriti began meeting with temple presidents and other leaders to try to draw attention to the situation. She finally struck gold last year when she spoke to North European BBT trustee Brahma Muhurta Dasa at her BBT art seminar in Vrindavana, India. An art lover himself, Brahma Muhurta decided it was time to make a difference. (Click here for the full article)

Is the Sky Really Falling?

Financial markets in a free-fall. Chaos on Wall St. International markets in a tailspin. European bailout. More banks to fail. Sound alarming? (News flash: it's suppose to; that's how the media sells information better.) Sorry you didn't send donations to Gita Nagari, get your own cow, or relocate to Mayapur? The SP varnamasrama quotes are coming fast and furious in various discussion forums; the imperative for life based on agriculture is palpable in the Vaisnava chat rooms. Meanwhile, do you see anything has changed? Trains are still rolling, and the laptop still charges up from a wire to the wall. Am I missing something here? (Click here for the full article)

Bhaktivedanta Mission School Students Burn Ravana
by Parijata devi dasi
Posted October 14, 2008

On the occasion of Dusshera, the students and teachers of Bhaktivedanta Swami Mission School, Mumbai, burned an effigy of Ravana.

Dusshera, also known as Vijayadashami, is a celebration to mark the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana, the ten-headed king of Lanka, who had abducted Rama's wife, Sita. It also symbolizes the triumph of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon, Mahishasura.

The festive mood gripped the students of Bhaktivedanta Swami Mission School, located on Hare Krishna Land at ISKCON Juhu, as they prepared to burn a seven feet effigy of Ravana. The rancorous looking effigy made from eco-friendly materials was the handiwork of the Schools Art & Craft teacher Ms Bhairavi prepared with assistance from other teachers and students. She was experiencing extreme dizziness and requested to be taken to a doctor immediately. We called for an ambulance which arrived shortly and took her to a nearby hospital. After some time they scanned her brain and discovered that her brain was bleeding. Because there was no space in Copenhagen's neurosurgery center they rushed her by ambulance with siren blazing 140 kilometers to Odense, Denmark. (Click here for the full article)
