Story On Diwali Feast in Tucson Weekly

submitted by Dasarath dasa, by Tucson Weely
Posted October 29, 2006

The nights are getting cooler, the days are getting shorter, and people all over America are gearing up for Halloween and Thanksgiving. But in India, they have a different holiday to add some cheer to these darker days: It's called Diwali.

"Diwali means 'festival of lights or lamps,'" explains Sandamini, co-owner of the Hare Krishna-run restaurant Govinda's Natural Foods. "(The holiday) is celebrated all over India with great pomp and excitement. ... All the houses are lit up with lights, candles and ghee lamps, along with lots of sweets and fireworks." The Passing of Bhakta Seva
by Bala Tattva das (New Vrindavana)
Posted October 28, 2006

I'm still in shock over Bhakta Seva's passing. It seems to be a constant initial response to the death of someone close that you can't believe you will never see them again. It seems impossible you won't come around a corner and there they will be, as they have been for so many years. It's as if it takes awhile after the fact for the space they physically and subtly filled to revert to empty: and then that brings its own ache. (Click here for the full article)

Maharaja has suddenly left us without any time for us to say good bye. We are all crying and are feeling bereft without him. When saints are with us we must associate with them and we must serve them. Although a number of godbrothers went to Manipur with Maharaja after Gaura Purnima, the rest of the year he was alone.

I traveled to many places in the world with Maharaja. Over the last 15 years that I spent with Maharaja there were several special comments that he made to me that I wanted to share: (Click here for the full article)

Srila Prabhupada would sometimes quote a Bengali proverb regarding the story of the mouse and the snake: "The mouse very laboriously digs a hole in the ground wherein he will live, then along comes one snake that proceeds to eat the mouse and live very comfortably in his hole".

We members of the Interfaith League of Devotees at 25 1st Ave. (directly behind 26 2nd Ave.) in New York City have worked hard for at least 12 years building our six-storey 'hole' -- familiar to many as the Sanctuary Restaurant. (Click here for the full article)

Lord Jagannatha's Transcendental Smile in Ojai Valley News

by William Roberts

In the Wednesday October 4th, 2006 issue of the Ojai Valley News, the big beaming smile of Lord Jagannatha appeared on the back page in full color! This was accomplished by taking advantage of the Halloween season and a 120 lb pumpkin that was grown in the computer controlled 700 Sq. Ft. Raised Bed Vegetable Garden at the American Vedic Association. After growing the behemoth gourd, Adhoksaja Devi Dasi decided to paint it with the beaming smile of Lord Jagannatha instead of the more common haunting expressions like the seasonal Jack-O-Lanterns. Oct. 7, 2006, is the first day of the Kartika Vraja Mandala Parikrama, and it will continue to Nov. 7. As every year, a beautiful pandal was built in Gopinatha Bhavan in Vrndavana, and Srila Narayana Maharaja gave his first discourse there today.

He told his international audience that this month is Srimati Radharani's month, and he explained in brief the importance of the month. He said that many of our important acaryas have appeared or disappeared in this month, and that many of Sri Krsna's important pastimes occurred in this month. He said that everyone should give up their comforts such as having air conditioning and an attached bathroom during this month, because they have come here to perform austerities. One More Round: Increasing Our Attachment to the Holy Name
by Hector Rosario, PhD
Posted October 10, 2006

As followers of Srila Prabhupada we all know his prescription to chant a minimum daily quota of 16 rounds of the Hare Krishna mahamantra. This is the minimum standard that he set for his followers and which all ISKCON devotees accept. This standard is actually based on the traditional Gaudiya Vaisnava minimum standard set by Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Of course, that standard is 100,000 names of Krishna daily, roughly equivalent to 64 rounds of Hare Krishna japa, according to Bhaktivinoda Thakura and other acaryas. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta, echoing Lord Caitanya, considered those who could not adhere to this minimum standard to be fallen. (Click here for the full article)

When raising Tulsi from a baby plant, find a nice warm very sunny area to place her. She must be in the sun everyday, all day until the sun sets. You must water her everyday because she needs water daily. Tulsi will start growing very fast and will spread. As she spreads she will grow manjaries. When the manjaries are dryed out and turning brown, clip them off with a pair of sissors between the two small leaves at the bottom of the manjary. (Click here for the full article)

Two Types of Brahman Realization
by Niscala dasi
Posted October 4, 2006

We know that realization of God in His Bhagavan feature is the highest realization, as it includes realization of His other features, Paramatma and Brahman. And we are given the logical proof- that as God is everything, He must be form and personality as well; but that since God is all-spiritual, His personality and form must necessarily be spiritual. And in the science of objects in this world, such as the study of electricity, it is the beginning student who knows it as an impersonal energy, but a master who knows the workings of the electrician behind it and how he directs it in certain ways according to his design. We wish you all a happy Diwali. Diwali marks the end of the year, and by the year's end we want to pay our debts, rectify our relationships, and prepare for the next year--and try to do better in the next year.

The Vedic literatures inform us that in the present age, Kali-yuga, the recommended process for self-realization, or God realization, is the chanting of the holy names of the Lord. A dear Vaishnava family here in Vrndavan Dhama is currently in need of assistance from the greater Vaishnava community. Lalita Devi is known as a sweet devotee who has the wonderful service of making flower garlands, raising two children, and caring for her husband and household. Some may know her as the wife of Premanidhi Dasa, who takes on the service of being in charge of visa matters for those who take shelter of the Dhama. These wonderful devotees share important services while living quite austerely. Consequently, they do not have much Laxmi, especially when it comes to unexpected expenses... Interviewing Abuse Survivors
by Bhakta Re'em
Posted October 17, 2006

My name is Re'em Stern, and I am a student of Theology in Radhadesh, Belgium. For a course on contemporary social issues in ISKCON I would be interested to interview survivors of physical child abuse on how they cope with their past within ISKCON. Statistics show that child abuse rates increase yearly worldwide, and so it is possible that various ISKCON members are suffering the pain of abuse that occurred outside the movement. Regardless of where the abuse occurred, either within or outside the movement, I would appreciate your cooperation in sharing how you deal with it in your daily lives and in the attempt to always remember Krishna. You can write to: bh.reem@gmail.com. I will not share any information you provide without your agreement.

Season of Mists And Mellow Pilgrimage

by The Royal Scribe, rmadhava.blogspot.com
Posted October 10, 2006

In the West, the season of autumn inspires poetry, with it's delicate morning mists and dew-spangled spiders-webs; golden sunshine and the smell of bonfires and autumn leaves. In Celtic lore, this was a time of year when the veil between this world and the other was supposed to be thinner than normal, culminating in the festival of Samhain or Halloween.

For Vaishnavas, the charms of autumn are enhanced by the season of Karttika, the lunar month which falls across October and November. (Click here for the full article)

Meditations On Bhakti Svarüpa Dämodara Swami
by Krishnabhishek dasa
Posted October 6, 2006

Although I have met you several times up until March 2006, I have never written any letter to you. I hope and pray that you will accept this posthumous offering at your lotus feet.

An e-mail from my dear godbrother in Calcutta, Shyamaramana das, brought the untimely and unexpected news of your passing away. For a long moment I cast away all the work that I was doing and meditated on the lesson that you were teaching me: we have to be Krishna conscious every moment. It might be my turn next. Who knows? You are an acharya in your glorious passing as much as you were while you walked this planet. (Click here for the full article)

Posted October 2, 2006

Last year, Goura Prema dasi was seriously injured by a hit-and-run car in Delhi, saving her sister's life but suffering a crushed ankle, foot and leg. As a lifelong dancer, it was a tragedy for her. It happened the day after her successful audition with the prestigious Sri Ram Bharatiya Kala Kendra in Delhi and one day before her first Katthak classes. She endured two operations. For two months, she had to remain in bed taking pain-killers. For seven months thereafter, she went back to her school for daily physiotherapy, scaling three flights of stairs to her room in the school dormitory, dragging her cast and crutches.
