A New Face for VCal
by GBC Vaisnava Calendar Committee
Posted October 31, 2005

Because VCal was written in the early 80's, its programming language is out of date, and it no longer makes sense to maintain and update the code. So, the GBC Vaishnava Calendar Committee has embarked on a modernization process.

The first step in this process can be seen at:

WEDDING FEAST WELCOMED ALL TO WATCH AND PARTICIPATE IN KRISHNA TRADITION

Dousing the fire with purified butter, a priest chanted in Sanskrit as the oils fueled the celestial flame.

Transcendental Videos Wanted for Public Broadcast!
by Mayesvara dasa
Posted October 22, 2005

Public Access has granted AVA a one hour time slot for as long as we are able to continue providing them with new material for broadcast. For that reason I am inviting all the devotees who may have filmed devotional plays, lectures, classical dance, pandal programs, transcendental festivals like Rathayatra or Janmastami, special documentaries and other educational material to contact either myself (md@Jagannatha.com) or Anadi dasa (productionhighway@sbcglobal.net) with information about your creative efforts. If we find that it is appropriate and can be fitted to our format for public broadcast we would like to work with you. This is an excellent opportunity to have your work viewed by a large audience. I am prepared to cover any costs involved in sharing your work with us for this project. I will also happily pass any public inquires or response back to the authors of their respective productions when I receive them. (Click here for the full article)

Resolving the Swing Thing

The Long Term Impact Of Criticizing the Mission Of the Founder-acarya
by Braja Sevaki Devi Dasi
Posted October 13, 2005

The temptation to ignore the complaints of both Solai ("The Long Term Impact Of Urbanizing Mayapur" Chakra, September 19, 2005) and later Sarah Pillai ("Response To Hemagauri's Article On Urbanizing Mayapur Chakra, Octover 6, 2005), is a strong one. Yet when Srila Prabhupada's mission and followers are criticized in an attempt to justify one's personal viewpoint, it becomes a matter of necessity rather than choice to speak on behalf of Srila Prabhupäda. In his final Vyasa-puja offering to Srila Prabhupada, HH Tamal Krishna Goswami asked the question: "Who speaks for Srila Prabhupada?" His answer was that everyone has their place, and our contributions to the mission of Srila Prabhupada, even while riddled with faults, should be taken into consideration. Animated Ramayana
by Nrsimhananda das
Posted October 7, 2005

The mystery of why the Animated Ramayana, aka Prince of Light, never got distributed legally is revealed.

Many devotees have asked us why we don't distribute it. We were requested by the producer, Yugo Sako, a pious man, not to sell any pirated copies.

Anuttama das of Iskcon Public Affairs Office made an official plea for devotees to respect the wishes of Mr. Sako. I had the pleasure of hosting Mr. Sako for prasadam at the Pyramid House in Los Angeles. I offered him laksmi to compensate for any injury, but he gracefully declined. He simply asked that no one bootleg his film.

Below you will find out his whole story. (Click here for the full article)

The Long Term Impact Of Neglecting the Achievements Of the Previous Acharyas
by Sarah Pillai
Posted October 23, 2005

It would seem from reading the response of Braja Sevaki, that she may have misunderstood the purpose and intent of my previous article, so please let me clarify: Firstly, I did not blame ISKCON for "wine, women and prostitution" as she put it. I simply stated that this sort of problem had been ongoing in Mayapur for many years and that it could be a serious problem in the future considering the amount of non-devotee labour needed to build the temple. To my knowledge, this problem (and other problems) has not been sufficiently addressed by the Mayapur Planning Committee. (Click here for the full article)

Response To Hemagauri's Article On Urbanizing Mayapur

Posted October 6, 2005

While it is true that the world around us is indeed changing, I think it is the duty of the ISKCON Mayapur development project to try to maintain a proper ecological balance in the holy dhama and consider the other residents feelings.

What most devotees have probably failed to understand is that with the amount of labor required to build the ISKCON temple in Mayapur, a whole set of problems will also arise which will turn the dhama into a nightmare scenario. (Click here for the full article)

  A Dilemma
by Venkatesh Raghavan
Posted October 31, 2005

I was aspiring to be a disciple of a well-known sannyasi in the Hare Krishna movement, until I spoke to a close godbrother of his, who is also a sannyasi. When I confided that I am gay, the godbrother said I should avoid or minimize contact with men and only associate with women.

As an outspoken gay Hare Krishna devotee, I found his statement very disappointing. If a male devotee stops associating with male devotees and hangs around female ones, his action will be questioned by the mass of people. He will be outed to the entire public. (Click here for the full article)

$61 Million Dollar Jagannath Cultural Project To Begin In Usa

"If you call yourselves Americans, then you should do something wonderful for Krishna," was a challenge that Srila Prabhupada put before his young American disciples to encourage them to think of spreading Krishna consciousness in big ways. With all the large Iskcon projects completed and underway in India, America seems to be left in the dust (sacred nontheless), seemingly struggling in most cases of trying to maintain temples, with a lack of laxmi and devotees, projects which were started more than 30 years ago! Remembering Kusakratha Prabhu
by Vishoka Dasa
Posted October 20, 2005

Kusakratha Prabhu's life is an inspiration to the devotees of Lord Krishna. I first saw him in the San Francisco temple, where he was staying for a short time, just coming from the NY temple. He was sensitive to the cold weather, and so he wore pants or jeans under his dhoti. He chanted japa very, very slowly, carefully pronouncing each syllable of the maha-mantra, taking several hours to chant his rounds. This is a great example for us all, to remember to slow down and carefully enunciate the holy names during our japa. I believe that he went to San Diego after that, where he told me that he would sometimes eat 20 japatis in a single sitting. (Click here for the full article)

Urbanising Sridham Mayapur - a Reconciliatory Approach Is Optimal
by R. Jai Simman (Jakarta, Indonesia)
Posted October 17, 2005

I have been following the discussions on CHAKRA regarding the feared long-term impact of urbanising Sridham Mayapur that may be potentially created by ISKCON's project. It is clear that both parties are sincerely dedicated to realising Srila Prabhupada's vision and caring for the Holy dham. However, they differ perhaps only in terms of the details and not the purpose. Both parties are coming from different angles, trying to counter-balance the other's focus points. It is my humble view that upon closer scrutiny, neither of these is at conflict with each other. (Click here for the full article)

Garuda's Article
by Varshana Dasi
Posted October 15, 2005

I am sorry to see Garuda's nice article under attack. I do not think there is any reason to panic. Garuda's article was plainly a call to ISKcon to allow more devotees to initiate, and there was absolutely no indication that a "new" type of guru was to be concocted against Srila Prabhupada's wishes. Garuda's logic was extremely simple (and there is no need to exaggerate what he was saying). (Click here for the full article)

Perpetuating Kusakratha's Legacy
by Ranchor Das
Posted October 13, 2005

In his Hidden History Of Kusakratha (Part One) my esteemed godbrother Puskara prabhu confirms what many of us must long have thought. Kusakratha prabhu was put on earth just to serve Srila Prabhupada and succeeding generations through translating Vaishnava literatures. Ever since reading his rendition of the Sri Caitanya Bhagavata - such soulful and poetic English - I believed this. His wonderful texts now deserve to be re-published, with the benefit of careful editing and design, in a style and quality that match their inspired content. When suitable finances can be found, here is a grand project worthy to be accomplished!

In Response To Gender In Diversity
by Sri Nandanandana dasa
Posted October 12, 2005

In his response to my article "Women in Vedic Culture", Amara dasa said that it is a nice summary of the general role of women in Vedic society, but there are exceptions to the rule, which he goes on to explain what he means. That is all right, but that is all it was supposed to be, a general description of how women are honored and respected in genuine Vedic culture, and that it is a benefit to society to keep those standards alive. I wasn't writing a book that would include each and every situation or exception to general social behavior. It is a long article anyway, so I thought I would not have to make it longer by mentioning various exceptions or different circumstances merely to pacify or clarify things for someone like him. Garuda Prabhu's article "More Gurus Desperately Needed" (September 30, 2005) suffers from a major flaw: His thesis is in fact not supported by Srila Prabhupada's purports.
