"In the month of Kartika one should worship Lord Damodara and daily recite the prayer known as Damodarastaka, which has been spoken by the sage Satyavrata and which attracts Lord Damodara." (Sri Hari-bhakti-vilasa 2.16.198)

Pastimes of Lord Damodara

[Sri Sri Radha-Damodara take an ox-cart ride to tour Their fields and enliven Their devotees.]

A visitor's song:
"I don't say here it's overdone, but where I come from
the Deity is more worshiped in awe.
Here They go out on Damodara sports,
cavorting down the factory lift,
or crashing through the tall cornfields
without a thought that it's strange or rough!
I get the feeling He loves to play,
and somehow He's conveyed that to His servants.
who provide such times -- and that's special. (Click here for the entire article)

No Vraja-bhakti in Bhagavad-gita? -- A response to Danavir Goswami
by Babhru das
Posted October 30, 2003

In Battlefield Fancy, Danavir Goswami asserts that Swami B.V. Tripurari's commentary, Bhagavad-gita: Its Feeling and Philosophy should be avoided because it has eight flaws: Gita Opportunism, Impertinent Over-Stepping, Sahajiya, Tenth Canto Opportunism, Infidelity, Misinterpretation, Rasabhasa, and Mayavada. His main point is that it is wrong to describe Bhagavad-gita in terms of Vraja-bhakti. In this response, I will address some preliminary objections, establish the precedent for drawing Vraja-bhakti from certain verses of the Bhagavad-gita, document quotations from Srila Prabhupada that explain Vraja-bhakti in terms of Gita verses, address Tripurari Maharaja's mood in writing his Gita commentary and the propriety of writing another commentary on Bhagavad-gita, and give a brief refutation of each of Danavir Goswami's eight main points. Multiple Vaisnava commentaries deepen understanding of Bhagavad-gita
by Bhakta Ivar

Editor's Note:

Recently, Danavir Goswami wrote an article, "Battlefield Fancy", posted on www.dipika.org, which reviewed a book written by Tripurari Swami. That reviwew was not submitted to Chakra, and would not have been published in any case, as it did not meet our editorial guidelines. The reviewer did not mention the name of the book or its author, and Umapati Swami, the editor of the Dipika site, writes, "I did not know the book was written by Tripurari Maharaja."

Umapati Maharaja contends that Danavir Maharaja properly concealed the name of the author from him, and from his readers, "because he was only interested in defeating a philosophical point of view that he fears may be creeping into ISKCON." Umapati Maharaja has offered devotees an opportunity to rebut Danavir Maharaja's analysis, though carefully delineating the terms of acceptable replies. Here is one such response from a Dutch devotee, also sent to Chakra...

I am an alcoholic and attend regular meetings. Let me tell you that the people there are much better than the one's that I associated with in bars. Like everywhere else, some of the people I met in AA became close friends and others are my "brothers and sisters" in sobriety and God consciousness. Sometimes a friend or two of mine in AA will come with me to the temple restaurant, offer obeisances to the Deities, and stay to listen to the lecture. When a man is faced with the decision to accept a Higher Power into his life or live a desperate suffering life of drinking, most times he chooses the Higher Power. Alcoholics Anonymous Led Me to Krsna
by Haridas dasa
Posted October 28, 2003

I was struggling in AA when my first teacher Bimbasya dasa gave me Krsna. I owe big time. This is the main reason I'm posting this article. The recovery stats in AA are one in 44, yet this is the best program known around the world. There is only one that is better and it is not largly recognized. And that is Krsna Consciousness as outlined by Shila Prabhupada. In the twelve step recovery programs it recognized that one who 'gets the program' is generally one who gets the 'God' connection or one who totally surrenders'. I personally never surrendered to anything in my life, [before AA], and therefore I couldn't really surrender to a door knob or any kind of higher power until I new more about this entity I was surrendering to. I thank Bimbasya and Prabhupada every day for giving me the little bit of Krsna that I have. (Click here for the full article)

New Dvaraka Establishes Vaisnava Hatha-Yoga Center
by Atmananda das
Posted October 11, 2003

Atma Yoga represents a new way to promote the Krsna consciousness movement. Seeing the need to take advantage of the ever-expanding hatha yoga movement for spreading Krsna consciousness, Atmananda Dasa of New Dvaraka has developed a highly appealing Vaisnava hatha yoga system. Atma Yoga is externally similar to many of the commercial yoga systems but is fueled by bhakti shakti. The first full Atma Yoga Center was opened in Los Angeles, across from the New Dvaraka Temple, in January of this year. It has been a success, bringing new Krsna consciousness aspirants to the community. Additionally, two teacher training sessions have already been completed, and the new teachers are already teaching at the center. The hope is to see Atma Yoga Centers and teachers spring up all over the world, in association with established ISKCON centers. Teacher training courses are scheduled for various locations around the United States, Europe, and India during this year and the next. (Please visit http://www.yogamandir.com/teacher_training.html)

Alcoholics Anonymous
by Krsna-krpa das
Posted October 8, 2003

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I am answering a question that was sent to Back to Godhead by an aspiring devotee who has had a problem with alcohol and drugs for years. He goes to Alcoholics Anonymous which he experiences is very beneficial for staying sober, but from the Krishna conscious point of view, some of the people he meets there are very bad association. He feels, however, that if he leaves Alcoholics Anonymous, he will get back into alcohol and drugs as has happened to him before. I am wondering if there is a Krishna conscious version of Alcoholics Anonymous anywhere or if any other devotees have had a similar problem and found a solution to it that I could pass on to him, or if there is someone who can empathize with his problem would like to correspond with him to give him encouragement.

Thank you for your consideration.

I am looking for Purujit Prabhu, a german devotee who is a Prabhupada disciple. Him and his wife and 2 daughters lived in Los Angeles for awhile and then moved to Seattle, Washington. I heard his family had relocated in South America. If anyone knows where he is, please give him this message and please forward my email. I am trying to help a friend of mine get a hold of him. It will be of great service and peace of mind if I am able to find out his whereabouts. Please email me at mani_manjari108@hotmail.com

Informed Giving and Istagosthi

"Trust and informed giving" is a very well written article, but I can't wait until you folks stress Istagoshi on your informative website. I am an older devotee who truly believe in Istagoshi, not only debates and verbal discussions, but with actual devotee voting rights on all new ideas and even on all appropriations. After all, devotees are the ones who collect the laxmi and do the work so why can't the learn to intellegently vote and have the same majority ruling system within any temple? We already have Srila Prabhupada books and if he didn't want Istagoshis then he wouldn't have repeatedly mentioned them throughout his books as well as in his letters.
