My Mother's Death
by Mahabhagavati dasi
Posted November 27, 2009

I just wanted to tell all the devotees that my mother left her body Nov. 22 at 11 a.m. Many devotees knew her, and I thought this forum would be ideal to announce her passing.

She was born July 26, 1920 in Commerce, Oklahoma. She lived through the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression. Her family migrated to California in search of work when she was 16. She had a very hard life.

She became a very good businesswoman and owned and ran three successful restaurants in Arizona. She was able to retire by the age of 40. My sister and I never did without. Fortunately, she was able to live with us for the last eight years of her life — Krsna's kindness upon all of us. (Click here for the full article)

Nobody Goes Hungry

by Deepa Bhasthi, Times of India, 16 November 2009
Posted November 21, 2009

BANGALORE — When ISKCON sent an e-mail to donors abroad, seeking donations for their successful Akshaya Patra, with details of how many children the scheme was feeding every day, they are supposed to have received a reply, asking to reconfirm the one-million number — it could not be that high, was the doubt. The missionaries who pioneered the model and made it the success it is, had to reaffirm that indeed, they were feeding over a million children, every single day.

At last count, Akshaya Patra was feeding 1,186,206 children all over the country, apart from senior citizens, expectant and nursing mothers, and jail inmates in Bangalore. Chanchalapathi Dasa, vice-chairman of Akshaya Patra Foundation, tells the Times of India that they have been getting invitations to start a kitchen from countries like Kenya, Cambodia, Indonesia, Uganda and others. "But the first priority is India, and to fulfil invitations from within the country," he says. (Click here for the full article)

"Bhairavi" CD Evokes Classical India
by Amaraprabhu das (Berlin)
Posted November 21, 2009

A new CD entitled Bhairavi: beauty of nature, tribute to Ganges and Varanasi, is a contribution to the antiquity and sacredness of the holy city of Benares (Varanasi) exploring ancient raga music in praise of Mother Ganga and her worship. Those compositions are in tune with the Sama Veda chants and stimulate a peaceful atmosphere and spiritual practice.

The CD is recorded with sound from the towns, bathing ghats, temple halls and puja ceremonies placed between the songs, to create the feeling of worship and praise. The ten special songs mastered and recorded on this CD by great musicians from Varanasi are played with emotion, while keeping the orthodox tradition of music. (Click here for the full article)

Gurus Gather for Reflection

by ISKCON News Service on 14 Nov 2009
Posted November 17, 2009

Image: Anshul Sharma
The retreat aimed to facilitate and stimulate such sanga in various ways: Hearing, chanting, honoring prasad and remembering Srila Prabhupada together.

During Kartik, 2009, fifteen ISKCON diksa and siksa gurus gathered at ISKCON Ujjain for a first ever "Guru Retreat". The pilot four-day event, organized by the GBC's Guru Services Committee to help support the spiritual health of gurus and disciples in ISKCON, stimulated valuable ideas in a surcharged atmosphere of sanga and memorable kirtans, classes and realizations.

An ISKCON guru once compared the challenging service of providing siksa and diksa to "being a single outlet for a thousand plugs." And, unique in Gaudiya Vaishnava history, gurus in ISKCON are asked to serve within the framework of an international institution, and under the leadership of the Governing Body Commission (GBC). The group discussed Srila Prabhupada's vision of thousands of ISKCON gurus serving harmoniously throughout the world, and the challenges in achieving that. (Click here for the full article)

The Guru Does Not Make Disciples
by H.H. Ramsukhdas Swami
Posted November 7, 2009

Bhagavan Sri Krishna has said in the Bhagavad-gita: "Neither the hosts of demigods nor the great sages know My origin or opulences, for, in every respect, I am the source of the demigods and sages." (Bg. 10.2). Even Arjuna, on beholding the Lord's Universal Form, praised His glories: "O great one, greater even than Brahma, You are the original creator. Why then should they not offer their respectful obeisances unto You? You are the father of this complete cosmic manifestation, of the moving and the nonmoving. You are its worshippable chief, the supreme spiritual master." (Bg. 11.37, 11.43).

In other words, it is not essential for a sadhaka, or spiritual aspirant, to search for a guru. Considering the advice of Sri Guru Stotra to see Lord Krishna the Supreme Personality of Godhead as the Universal Guru (vasudevam sutam devam, kamsa-chanura mardanam; devaki-paramanandam krishnam, vande jagad-gurum"), a sadhaka should look to Bhagavan Sri Krishna as his Guru and the Bhagavad-gita as the Lord's mantra and divine message. Proposed ISKCON Membership Criteria Too Narrow
by Babhru das
Posted November 25, 2009

A few weeks ago, I received a copy of a PowerPoint presentation arguing for certain standards for ISKCON membership. More recently, an ISKCON news site published some audio accompanying this presentation, along with some editorial comments. Perhaps against my better judgement, I posted a comment on this presentation.

I haven't had a chance to listen to the audio yet, but someone sent me Sivarama Swami's PowerPoint presentation a couple of weeks ago. At the moment, I can only respond to that. Although I understand the perceived need to define membership, such definition should be in line with Srila Prabhupada's standard, as suggested by others here and elsewhere.

With regard to specifics of his presentation, I can share a couple of my initial, immediate responses to reading his ideas. (Click here for the full article)

BBT Puts Gita Changes Online

The Gita Changes for Chapter One: BBT puts them online

Now you can see "the changes" for chapter one of Bhagavad-gita As It Is, at www.BBTedit.com/changes. You'll see the revisions Jayadvaita Swami made to the purports, in the actual book where he made them. You'll also see the revisions made to the word-for-word meanings. (The translations were done separately.)

Annotations give the reasons for most of the changes (and most often also tell what Srila Prabhupada's original manuscript said). Images show relevant portions of the manuscript itself, as well as two sample pages.

Oregon Prisoner Appreciates Devotees
by Bhakti-lata dasi
Posted November 17, 2009

Here are excerpts of a letter from a prison inmate in Salem, Oregon. You can see that there are really no obstacles to Krsna consciousness, even in prison. Bhakta James writes: "Our program has grown a lot. New men are becoming interested in Krsna consciousness. I give a Bhagavad-gita class every day in the yard. Then we have our own worship service.

"Preaching is my life, and my friends always ask: 'Why is it, no matter what we start talking about, we end up talking about Krsna?' And you know your friends see you as a priest when they say they're sorry for letting a 'cuss word' slip." The prison environment permits frequent interfaith discussions, and James cheerily notes: "Many faiths are coming to our worship service — Christians, Buddhist, Islam, Wicca and even two Vedanta impersonalists. We all chant Hare Krishna together and dance in great joy!" (Click here for the full article)

Vaishnava TV Series Needs Sponsors
by Bhargava das (ACBS 1971)
Posted November 15, 2009

A television series on Vaishnavism is nearing completion. Faces of God is a privately owned and funded cultural series intended to show the people of India practicing Vaishnavism. Twelve half-hour episodes include two hours on Sri Vishnu, one on Sri Rama and three on Sri Krishna. Also included is a short segment on Lord Shiva, Ganesh and Devi. The series journeys to the holy places, festivals and miraculous happenings connected to these forms.

The shooting and editing are now finished. Music is still needed, possibly a new narrator, sound sweetening and formatting for cable, satellite and broadcast. Estimated costs are about $10,000.

More important to the success of the project is the need for corporate sponsors, as a series this long on this subject needs to be subsidized in order to get a carrier like Discovery Channel or National Geographic to supply suficient time slots for broadcasting it. Reviving Preaching in US
by Kishore Krsna das, ISKCON Florida
Posted November 7, 2009

As we all know, giving Krsna consciousness to others is most pleasing to Srila Prabhupada, Sri Guru and Gauranga and to the previous acaryas. I am an ISKCON devotee in good standing, initiated by H.H. Bhakti Caru Swami. Inspired by Srila Prabhupada's mood and his dedication to preaching activities all over the world, I have been doing college preaching for the last 15 years in the U.S. I have also been involved in some business activity which supports the preaching and myself.

Lately Krsna revealed a very simple concept to bring young college students to Krsna consciousness through cooking classes. After the cooking class we do yoga dance (kirtan) and serve prasadam. Attending class is optional for students. For the last seven weeks we have had 20 to 25 students attending to our program. (Click here for the full article)

Over a million pilgrims are expected to visit the sprawling ISKCON camp at Kumbha Mela 2010 in the holy city of Haridwar in India between February and April 2010, which will coincide with the celebration of the 500th anniversary of Lord Chaitanya's acceptance of sannyasa. Kumbha Mela is the largest religious gathering in the world attracting over 75 million pilgrims who bathe in sacred waters to 'cleanse their sins'. Hundreds of religious organisations set up camps at the site of the Kumbha Mela to preach to the pilgrims who stay there for a few days. It is an incredible feat of human logistics and planning led by the Indian Government, which sets up temporary infrastructure for the visiting millions including pantaloon bridges, toilets, medical camps, public announcement systems, food and water arrangements, crowd control and security.

Business Opportunity

I would like to advertise an opportunity for devotees that would like to live in the New Vrindaban area, but need a way to make income while being a part of the community. Aso some of our seasonal visitors may see this as both a financial opportunity and an inspiration to visit New Vrindaban more often.

Anyway, I have three buildings available for purchase. One building is a four-unit building, three of the units are completed refurbished, and are ready to live in, or to rent out right now. The fourth unit still needs some work. There is a large garage on the property, and a nice, grassy backyard.

The next property is a nice house, which can either be used as a one-family unit, or a two family unit. (Click here for the full article)

Eulogy for Rajgana Das
by Yasomatinandana Das, Sydney
Posted November 1, 2009

It is around this time of year that we remember the day our spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada, left our vision to enter the eternal realm of Sri Sri Radha and Krishna in the spiritual sky. At this auspicious time I would also like to reflect on one of Srila Prabhupada's earliest disciples in Australia, Sriman Rajgana Das, who has recently passed away. Rajgana prabhu was a very nice and simple hearted devotee who greatly influenced myself and many others to join the temple. Although it is unfortunate that he is no longer with us, it is fortunate in another way that he is now with Srila Prabhupada in spirit due to his being so devoted and surrendered to him from the very early days of the Hare Krishna movement in Australia. In past years we have heard how Srila Prabhupada promised us that we are all assured of going back home, back to Godhead due to engaging in the sankirtana movement of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Brazilian Devotee Defends Gaudiya Thesis in Varanasi
by Tejnath Paudel
Posted November 15, 2009

For many centuries, Varanasi has been the center of advaita-vada, but now the acintya-bheda-abheda system is getting recognition there. After concluding his post-graduate studies as a gold medalist in 2006, Bhakta Demian Martins, a Brazilian devotee, pursued a doctorate program, having as his main subject Lord Caitanya's acintya-bheda-abheda-tattva philosophy, according to the commentary Govinda Bhasya, written by Srila Baladeva Vidyabhusana.

In this research work, Martins substantiated the authenticity and relevance of the Gaudiya school of Vedanta and elaborated on the philosophical conclusions presented by the Acarya Baladeva Vidyabhusana.

He defended his thesis on November 11 before a committee of scholars headed by Dr. R.C. Panda, the principal of the Sanskrit Faculty at Benares Hindu University. (Click here for the full article)

Helping ISKCON Manila FFL
by Nam Sankirtana

Many years ago in the Brooklyn temple, Tamal Krishna Maharaja and Mahasringa Prabhu were visiting the temple.

Mahasringa asked Tamal Krishna Maharaja, "Nam Sankirtana is from Manila, maybe we can ask him to go there." Tamal Krishna Maharaja looked at him and at me, and shrugged it off, as he knew I would not leave New York.

Three years ago I was fortunate enough to go home, back to Manila, after so many years of not having visited my home country of the Philippines. I was met by really nice devotees, who showed me love and hospitality that I have not seen since the New York 55th Street temple,

The Deities in the Manila Temple, Sri Sri Radha Madhava were gorgeous and the Prasad was awesome. The same temple room that was flooded during the recent disaster was the same temple room I sat down in three years ago. (Click here for the full article)

Hunger Strikes May End Illegal Braj Hills Mining
by Radha Kant Shashtri

Devotees will know from the Srimad Bhagavatam that the Braj Hills, spanning the boundaries of modern Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana states, are intrinsic to the spiritual life of all Vaishnavas, having been the earthly location of the epic childhood pastimes of Sri Sri Radha and Krishna.
