Hare Krishna Brazil Gets Good Publicity

by Giridhari das
Posted November 30, 2008

One of Brazil's top weekly magazines, Epoca, published a very favorable article on the Hare Krishna Movement. My wife Carana Renu dasi and I were featured in it. Here's a picture they used of us, spanning about a page and half.

I coordinate an e-mail list with over 8000 members, called "Amigos de Krishna". People sign up for it on our official website (www.harekrishna.com.br). I write to each and every member as they sign up and many develop a regular correspondence with me as a result. One recently added member happens to be a media consultant. He's already gotten us several good articles in various newspapers, mostly about Nova Gokula, the biggest rural ISKCON project in Brazil. (Click here for the full article)

Don't Judge a Book By Its Cover
by Bhaktin Sara
Posted November 27, 2008

This seems like such common sense, but I was shocked to find out that the attitude still prevails in some places and some people, that one's external presentation reveals one's level of devotion.

Only Krishna can see all our daily activities, hear all our daily prayers, understand our heart's motivation for that which we do and say, and knows our sincerity and feelings of devotion for Him.

One can wear tilaka and dhoti/sari each day, but be mean to others. On the other hand, one can work outside of the temple and be conscious of Krishna. (Click here for the full article)

Preachers & Pujaris

Phoenix Arizona is the 5th largest city in America and home to Sri Sri Radha Madhava Hari. Temple administrators are setting a goal in 2009 to increase our outreach, accountability and services. To this end we need the association of devotees with enthusiasm and knowledge to spread KC in a unified and collective way. We invite all book distributors and senior preachers to spend some time in Phoenix as the winter weather is very mild with millions of conditioned souls to reach. (Click here for the full article)

Open Letter to the King of Puri
by Bhakta Omer
Posted November 23, 2008

The following letter was sent to His Royal Highness Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, king of Puri and chair of the Sri Jagannath Temple managing committee, due to the recent events in Puri involving burning an effigy of Srila Prabhupada by Puri priests.:

Maharaj,

I am a non-Hindu by birth who has been following Gaudiya Vaisnavism for years now and worship Sri Sri Jagannath-Baladeva-Subhadra on my home altar. Two years ago I happened to visit your city of Puri. I was very glad to visit the city of Lord Jagannath, and my stay was indeed pleasant by His mercy. (Click here for the full article)

A Letter of Resignation
by Bhavasindhi dd
Posted November 23, 2008

I read Bhaktin Eva's letter (Click Here) with a heavy heart. It is so sad to see sincere people being turned away from Krishna consciousness due to this nonsense sexism. iskconjiva.blogspot.com wrote a harsh refutation of the 2000 Women's issue in ISKCON, I did not read the whole thing. It expanded women's rights in ISKCON, and it was passed by the GBC.

Gender discrimination and hateful words have no place in a supposedly spiritual movement like ISKCON. What will happen to ISKCON when this continued abuse against women hits the international media? (Click here for the full article)

ISKCON's Initiative for Poor Children

by akshayapatra.org
Posted November 17, 2008

While parents of children studying in good private schools pack lunch boxes according to their kids' choice, there are many others who can barely afford daily provisions for their family, let alone the additional burden of paying for their children's education. Assuming the role of a nutrition-conscious parent, Akshaya Patra sends healthy and delicious food to more than nine lakh children, at least half of them from Karnataka alone. Intiated by ISKCON, the Akshaya Patra mid-day meal service for children started in the year 2000 with four schools in Rajajinagar, Bangalore. Today it has crossed 4,500 schools in 16 locations across six states including Karnataka. (Click here for the full article)

Promoting the Culture of Caring : Devotee Care Committee Meets in Mumbai
by Parijata devi dasi
Posted November 15, 2008

The Devotee Care Committee, still in its infancy, met during the GBC Strategic Planning Meeting held in Mumbai from 15-23 October 2008. Interestingly, the Devotees Care Committee was born of the Preaching Committee. Members of the Preaching Committees reflected that if the devotees are not well taken care then preaching would not have any lasting effect. They understood that preaching can attract people but it doesn't keep them. The GBC body recognized the need to care for devotees individually and collectively and thus formulated the Devotee Care Committee. (Click here for the full article)

[Note from editors: Please forward your letters to Jayapataka Maharaja to chakraletters@gmail.com for posting and let us know if you want us to forward them to Maharaja's secretaries as well.]

From HH Prahladananda Swami:

As I have witnessed your enormous strength and endurance over many years, am confident that you will recover from your recent illness. When Hanuman leaped over to Lanka and came back it was certainly an amazing feat. However, with the aid of modern technology, you have repeatedly leaped over many continents, sometime amazingly enough, in the same day. Undoubtedly, you have inspired thousands of devotees by your constant desire to give them your association and assist them in many ways in their spiritual life.

Each year for many years, I have met you in different continents and countries, usually in Peru, Australia and New Zealand, the United States and of course India. You have always been very affectionate to me and my travel guru. There is no equal to you in the world in experience and knowledge in the art of traveling to deliver the message of Lord Caitanya-something every sannyasi needs to know. The Importance of Voting
by Dharini Dasi, ACBSP
Posted November 4, 2008

When the government had become corrupt five thousand years ago, Krsna instructed Arjuna to get rid of the government for the welfare of the citizens. Although none of the current US candidates are Yadu-like or Krsna-conscious, an argument could be made that devotees who live and work outside temples have good reasons to vote. Government policies affect ISKCON and the lives of devotees in many ways. Philosophy is meant for its application, and voting can be a way to express principles we believe in.

The republicans' pro-life position stands in clear contradiction to their promotion of violence through their pro-gun stance since the guns are used to kill animals; through their promotion of torture of political prisoners; and through an unprecedented pre-emptive war. Real And Imagined Nomenclature of Saligram Silas
by Janardana das
Posted November 2, 2008

I returned from my trip to India recently. What a trip it was at the feet of my Lord at Mathura in Vrindavan! This time I had a chance to pick up sacred Saligram Silas from Haridwar. There are now a couple of websites selling silas at high prices, but there is absolutely no limit as to how these suppliers have stretched the imagination as to the naming of the Lord. Saligrams have been given a variety of incorrect and arbitrary names — like "Sacred Adwaitya Shweta Shashidhara Chandramauli Kalp Laxmi Vishvaksena Ganesha" and "Sacred Double Golden Kamal Santan Gopal Matsya Chaturbhuj Chakradhari Bhur Bhuvas" — seemingly to attribute particular properties to them and, thus, to charge high amounts.   Sexism
by Gopi devi dasi
Posted November 30, 2008

We see that sexism is still very much a part of ISKCON. The GBC was finally going to do something this year to stop sexist devotees from misusing Prabhupada's statements, but unfortunately, the BBT, as well as a large number of devotees, rejected their 311 Resolution, proving that sexism is still very much a part of ISKCON. This sexist attitude has been propagated by devotees who claim to represent Srila Prabhupada, but are actually just pushing their own prejudices onto others. We are left feeling like we have no place due to the woman-hating in ISKCON. This is supposed to be an all-encompassing and inclusive movement, (Click here for the full article)

Official Statement of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) Regarding the Terrorist Attacks in Mumbai, India
by ISKCON Governing Body Commission, Ministry of Communications
Posted November 28, 2008

November 27, 2008

It is with great shock, outrage, and sorrow that members of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, (ISKCON), have learned of the horrific terrorists attacks in Mumbai, India, against hundreds of innocent people.

We thoroughly condemn such acts of violence as being in violation of all principles of law, religion, morality and human decency.

Our prayers and sympathies go out to all of the victims and their families. We also pray for Lord Krishna's blessing for those in the police forces, medical fields and others who have sacrificed to protect those in danger and those who have been harmed.

Our three major Hare Krishna/ISKCON temples in Mumbai have been part of the fabric of life in the city beginning in 1971. We have lived and worshipped in peace next door to our many Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Jewish, fellow Hindu, and friends and neighbors of other faiths for nearly forty years.

Today, we join our interfaith and secular friends in condemning this cowardly act, and echo the call of many faiths and traditions of India, speaking in one voice, in condemning the use of violence against civilians and other innocents in any and all circumstances. Gradual Elevation Preferred to Repression
by Niscala dasi
Posted November 25, 2008

Some interesting responses came about from my last article "Flexible Following of Rigid Rules". All were appreciative and thankful that the topic was brought up. I hope the GBC will take note of this fact and bring the topic up in their meetings, for this survey proves that doing so, and following it up with action, will benefit the majority of our members.

One correspondent expressed the need for simple living and coming up to the mode of goodness as an essential precedent to following. Certainly if one acts, lives and thinks primarily in the mode of passion, one cannot expect to suddenly be in goodness when one hops into bed at night. (Click here for the full article)

Flexibility in Following Rigid Rules
by Niscala dasi
Posted November 15, 2008

This article is about problems we encounter in following standards given to us by Srila Prabhupada, specifically the vows we take at initiation. We find little difficulty in lacto-vegetarianism when our taste buds are saturated with so many delightful delicacies. (See, for example, my Veggie Patties.) There is much purpose and good effects from that vow, from being able to be a true friend to all living entities, to helping to drastically reduce one's ecological footprint. With purpose and a higher taste comes an assured following that is durable; one could say rigid. Few of us fall from it. (Click here for the full article)

Jayapataka Swami Update Nov 9, 2008

By Srila Prabhupada's and Krishna's mercy Maharaj is completely conscious, recognizing everyone, trying to speak and chant (of course he can't do that because of the tracheostomy tube) and moves all his limbs. HH Bhakti Caru Maharaj, HH Kavicandra Maharaj, HH Bhakti Siddhanta Maharaj were all reading from Caitanya Caritamrta and Maharaj could understand everything.

Jayapataka Swami Update
by Bhakti Purushottam Maharaja (from www.jpsoffice.com)

Maharaja's rate of improvement is very slow. His blood pressure, blood sugar, platelets, etc. are stable. We have consulted other neurologists and surgeons in India, from Delhi, Bhubanesvara, Tirupati, Mumbai, Bangalore, etc. Everyone is of the same opinion: the situation is very critical.

No surgery can be performed, and there is no medicine that can be given. The brain stem hemorrhage was very serious, and if the bleeding had continued there would have been no chance of survival. Fortunately Maharaja's bleeding has stopped, which is why there is hope of recovery. But there is no treatment for it: it has to heal on its own. (Click here for the full article)

Sponsor hay rolls at $51 each to feed Lord Krishna's cows at New Raman Reti. Years of drought and high petroleum prices have driven the cost of hay in North Central Florida through the barn roof. Up till last year $25 was the going rate for a large round hay bale. Now with the average price of a hay roll at around $50, Save the Cow's budget is seeing red, not a good color for those dealing with bulls and cows.

During this time of the year we all think of how to get more books distributed. Here are some nice testimonies of real people who have received Srila Prabhupada's books and are benefiting. It was with great shock, dismay, anguish, and anger that we received recent reports that a handful of misguided persons committed a great offense to His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada, the Founder-Acarya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), by burning his effigy in Jagannatha Puri, India.

Whatever criticisms an individual or a group may claim to have with ISKCON, to purposefully offend a Vaishnava saint in such a blatant manner is irreconcilable with the principles of Vaishnavism, Hindu culture, morality, and common decency. We condemn any and all such acts. (Click here for the full article)

Clergy Abuse Lawsuit
by Prajyumna
Posted November 22, 2008

My family is in the process of filing a class action lawsuit against ISKCON on the basis of clergy abuse. The pg-13 version of my story is available in the ISKCON communications Journal titled the Destruction and Resurrection of my Hare Krishna Faith. The rated-R version is with my lawyers.

www.iskcon.com/icj/9_1/pradyumna.html

I had presented this story in the Family and Youth Conference in 2001. The panel was hosted by my good friend, Jahnavi, who later became my fellow co-worker at Children of Krishna (CKI). God bless her heart for leaving her body fighting for the neglected and abused of ISKCON. (Click here for the full article)

by Nandanandana dasa (ACBSP)

Ratha-yatra in Guadalajara City, Mexico, was just celebrated last November 15 and 16, what it made it different from previous festivals was the absence of Ananda Swarupa prabhu, a disciple of Srila Prabhupada, who for the past 31 years played the roll of King Patraparudra in each and every Ratha-yatra in Guadalajara, and for the past 5 years in the Ratha-yatra festivals at Mexico City. He would be dressed in an opulent costume for the occasion and would be sweeping with an elaborately decorated broom in front of Lord Jagannatha┬┤s cart. (Click here for the full article)

You have helped me so much with the prison ministry. You are one of the foremost advocates of inmates around the world. You actively promote teaching prisoners wherever you go and along with your kind disciple, Kaunteya dasa, have accepted ISKCON Prison Ministry under the auspicious umbrella of nama-hatta teaching. You help relieve the suffering and lonliness of many inmates who don't even know your name. You work behind the scenes to please Srila Prabhupada, Lord Sri Nityananda Rama, Lord Gauranga and the divine couple-- Sri Sri Gaurangi Syama. Please get well soon (Click here for the full article)

Bharatanatyam dance is an art that mostly is presented at Indian festivals, temple festivities and during many spiritual celebrations. As we know from the history for thousands of years it was hidden as higly sacred dance form presented only for pleasure of God, demigods and kings. Navya Shastra, an international Hindu reform organization based in Troy, Michigan, urges California voters to reject Proposition 8, which would eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry under state law.

The organization notes that Hinduism has never classified homosexuality as a sin against God.
