ISKCON Chapter 11 Announcement:
Undeliverable Mail

by Gupta das
Posted November 30, 2004

Information supplied by the claimants in the Proof of Claim form is used as a basis to evaluate claims. Rather than the Debtors filing an objection to every Proof of Claim which contains incomplete or unreadable information, a Request for Additional Information packet has been mailed to each claimant instead. If you are represented, that packet was mailed to your attorney. By responding to the questions in the packet, all claims can be comprehensively and fairly evaluated. Posted November 27, 2004

His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada built a house in which the whole world can live. Many fortunate souls have taken shelter in that house and become a part of the ISKCON family. His Divine Grace desired to create a family founded on love and trust. In an endeavor to reunite Srila Prabhupada's family at his lotus feet, we are organizing a Prabhupada Family Reunion in Mayapur during the 2005 Gaura Purnima Festival. Your participation in this festival is essential to fulfill the true purpose of the "Family Reunion". (Click here for the full article)

Sannyasis should not accumulate wealth
by J. B. Miller
Posted November 24, 2004

I would like to support the opinion of Jada Bharata das on the issue of financial statements in ISKCON.

The fact of the matter is, if some individuals were forced to expose their financial statements, that would expose a situation to their godbrothers and godsisters which is basically undesirable for them — especially in the case of sannyasis, who have taken a vow of poverty for the purpose of preaching the glories of Krsna throughout the world. Sannyasis, in particular, would stand to be placed in an embarrassing (if not suspect) position if they revealed accumulated wealth unbefitting their asrama. Plus, the sources of those donations may in itself be questionable. (Click here for the full article)

New Narasimha Tantra CD out!
by Amaraprabhu das
Posted November 10, 2004

One of the most secret and traditionally least researched subjects is the power of magic formulas, and on this CD you will find a summary of some of the famous Mantras in the Tantra scriptures. In the Vaisnava culture the two divine personalities who are the most important for seeking protection are Hanuman and Narasimhadeva; and the mystical power syllables connected with them are found on this CD. The recitation of such MANTRAS can purify the atmosphere and protect one from negative influences. Thus this CD can be used for example to accompany entrance into a new home, to eliminate sleeping problems or even to neutralize black magic. (Click here for the full article)

"Prabhupada was never furious or angry"
by Siddhajana das

I have noticed many times, in Srila Prabhupada's pastimes, when he was not pleased by a certain activity or results of orders given by him, many devotees describing him using the words "furious" or "anger". They may say something like "Srila Prabhupada became furious" or "Srila Prabhupada was furious" upon hearing such and such. A pure devotee can never be described in any way by using the word "furious" or "anger." (Click here for the full article)

Response to Adultery
by Gaurav Mittal
Posted November 24, 2004

According to law of karma, we get reaction (karma) for our actions. We have general of idea of our actions and the resultant good or bad karma which we will receive. It is very difficult to quantify or measure the degree of good or bad karma. Different scriptures may also vary on good or bad karma. For example, Christian or Islamic literatures may allow killing of animals whereas Vedic literatures may not. Even some interpretations of Vedic literature may allow killing animals. Really, better way to act is to act on basis of our realizations or conscience than basing our faith on a particular literature. For example, I don't eat meat because I don't want to kill animals to satisfy my taste buds. I can get nutritious food without inflicting miseries on animals. The reason of eating meat is compassion towards animals. I personally don't care about karma of eating meat. This is a side comment for this article. Instead of calculating what kind of karma one gets of each action, try to lead life on the basis of good moral principles e.g. do unto others what you want them to do to you, compassion etc. (Click here for the full article)

(The lifting of Govardhana)

by Swami Bhakti Ballabha Tirtha
Posted November 23, 2004

The Original Supreme Lord Sri Krsna Himself has revealed the ontological aspects and glories of Sri Govardhana. It has been especially narrated in the most ancient history and civilization of India mentioned in the Rg Veda that Indra, the presiding deity of the clouds, was worshipped on the Earth so that crops could be grown and reanimated by rainfall. We hear from the Srimad-Bhagavatam that according to human tradition and custom, annual worship of Indra was introduced in Vraja-dhama so that there could be cultivation of land and protection of the cows. That was the only means of livelihood for the residents of Vraja-dhama. (Click here for the full article)

Exercise unambiguously the function of the soul
by Arijit das
Posted November 10, 2004

Sometimes it appears that liberation from the clutches of mundane identification is more gratifying than the experience of Bhakti directed toward Sri Krishna. The truth is that it is not really the case. However from the view point of a neophyte bhakta, it may appear so. I remember being in India, sitting near a temple and observing a few goings on, one of which was the great happiness felt by a neophyte devotee. He was experiencing the pleasure of waking up before sunrise. He was saying that it was such a spiritual thing and it was so transcendental. The fact is it was not so spectacular and is an everyday occurrence for early risers. Spiritual bliss is far beyond any measurement of time to be found in the mundane atmosphere. In the same way, the happiness of liberation is thrilling in comparison to bondage. But the happiness of "Real Bhakti" is much more gratifying than the happiness felt by the impersonalist or the sense enjoys. The fact that a neophyte devotee does not necessarily experience this high level of transcendental bliss does not mean it doesn't exist. (Click here for the full article)

Are we in darkness?
by Subhadra-mayi dasi

We tend to see ourselves as spiritual, advanced people who have an enlightened world view. Our vision of the world and the happenings in it are God-centred: "That rain shower is a sign that the demigods are pleased. An earthquake is a punishment from God." Everything is described in relation to God and that is a sign of spirituality. The more we see God's hand in everything, the more advanced we are. (Click here for the full article)

Response to Seminars for sale: bhakti or business?

Whether or not devotees should charge for courses or teaching in ISKCON is an interesting point that we have struggled with and vigorously debated over the years. I recently read this letter from Prabhupada dated October 27, 1968. "If anybody calls for a meeting and lecturing, we must charge. And if they want to hear free, they may come to our temple. Don't become cheap. My Guru Maharaja used to say: "If somebody becomes cheap, then nobody hears him." I don't think anyone has started to charge for attending Bhagavatam classes in our temples. It seems that Prabhupada may not be completely averse to charging a fee for disseminating Vedic knowledge under certain circumstances. As for pop-psychology, that's another thing altogether.
