Keeping Pets
by Rohini Priya dd
Posted May 29, 2011

I would like to request a senior devotee to please write an article on the topic of devotees keeping pets. These are my areas of concern:

(i) Temples do not have pets because they are perceived as muchi. But devotees living outside may need to keep a pet dog or cat for different reasons:

(a) for protection;

(b) for companionship if they are old and alone;

(c) devotees may find themselves living with karmi family members who have this lifestyle;

(d) they may be raising children and feel it necessary to have a pet for their sake;

(e) be moved out of compassion to adopt a stray animal.

So these are my questions in this regard. If devotees have pets

1. Do we never feed them (Click here for the full article)

Travelogue to Puri and Navadvip; Kirtan All the Way
by Premanjana das
Posted May 18, 2011

The announcement was made well in advance. A bell rang for me as soon as I heard of the organized Spring 2011 trip to the two holy places of Jagannath Puri and Mayapur-Navadvip in Eastern India. I wanted to grab this opportunity, as I was going to get eight days of memorable devotee association and a chance to visit some of the places where the Lord Himself had performed pastimes with His most intimate disciples and where some of the greatest devotees in the history of Gaudiya Vaishnavism had spent their lives preaching the holy name and serving the Lord. The cost was just Rs. 4,000 for the entire trip, and it included everything. So I booked a place for myself and got ready to go.

It was 5:30 p.m. on March 25 when I reached the Hare Krishna Centre in Jaipur by city bus. The devotee tour guide gave us a brief idea of the whole trip. He warned us against dham-aparadh or offenses committed at the holy places. Also, he asked us not to look at these places materially. We loaded ourselves with cartons of Srila Prabhupada's books to distribute along the way on railway stations and inside the train. The whole place was full of the luggage of pilgrims. Most of the 77 devotees — 50 men and 27 women — who went for the trip were new faces for me.

Next morning we started by bus from Jaipur to Delhi, where we would get the train. In the night it was difficult to sleep on the bus. We reached ISKCON Delhi, the very grand and beautiful temple of Sri Radha Parthasarathi, in time for the Mangal Arati at 4:30 a,m. From there we moved to the railway station and took our train. I slept in the train and got up for lunch prasadam. Our group performed kirtan at all major railway stations along the way, and also in the train itself. (Click here for the full article)

Bhakti Tirtha Swami’s Words of Wisdom

Here are two wonderful ways of receiving the wisdom of Bhakti Tirtha Swami:

1. B.T. Swami's books now available in e-book format.

Traditional Readers vs. Techies

Current and Direct Link (CDL): Eight Principles and Practices
by Dhira Govinda dasa
Posted May 1, 2011

In 2001 I wrote Srila Prabhupada: The Prominent Link (PL), and therein described the PL model, which, according to our understanding of Srila Prabhupada’s teachings, is consistent with his vision and guidance for continuance of the disciplic succession. The purpose of this article is to delineate specific principles and practices that indicate alignment with the PL model. This is necessary because over the years I have frequently heard from or about persons who claim to agree with the PL model, but whose actions and statements, given in other contexts, are distinctly contrary to PL model principles. My hope and intention is to provide well-defined guidelines to determine whether or to what extent someone, ourselves included, is in genuine agreement with the PL model.

Terms

I first heard the term “prominent link” at an initiation lecture in 2001 in Alachua, Florida, and from that hearing I decided to use the term in the title of Srila Prabhupada: The Prominent Link. The Vaisnava conducting the initiation ceremony described the relationship between Srila Prabhupada and the initiates, as “prominent link”- that is, Srila Prabhupada was the prominent link to the parampara for the initiates. A few weeks after this initiation lecture the devotee who performed the initiation ceremony expressed to me in-person in Mayapur that he is not in agreement with the PL model, though also he acknowledged that he hadn’t actually read the short book, Srila Prabhupada: The Prominent Link. The Passing of Padma Dasi

Remembering Padma dasi by Nartaka Gopala dasi

Srimati Padma dasi, a disciple of His Divine Grace AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, passed away on April 22, 2011 in San Diego, California from colon cancer. Padma was a most remarkable and amazing woman. She was one of our original Head Pujaris at ISKCON Miami from 1976 to 1983.

Padma was multi-talented and had a genius for creating spectacular Deity outfits. Her husband, Charana Padma, had been in a rock band prior to joining the movement and she used to sew creative outfits for him. So Padma just transferred that talent over to the Deities when she joined the movement in 1976.

She never let having a small baby be an excuse for not being able to do other seva. When her son Rama was a baby he would be sleeping just outside the altar door and she would be dressing the Deities. (Click here for the full article)

Cakra-Bandha ("The Wheel Formation")
by Bhakta Demian
Posted May 15, 2011

Sanskrit poetry is enriched with a great variety of metrical patterns, figures of expression and innumerable other features. The mere combination of short and long syllables in verses with from one to 26 syllables per quarter makes a total of 67,108,864 possibilities. Citra-kavitva is one of the most impressive kinds of compositions, consisting in poems in the form of animals, flowers, etc.

Such poetry has been common among Indian poets for at least 2,000 years, and poets like Magha (7th century) became renowned for his intricate arrangements in the form of sword, zigzag, wheel, etc. The rules for such compositions were laid down in several treatises on poetics, among which King Bhoja's 11th-century Sarasvati-kanthabharana has a distinct place.

Although not so well-known yet, several Gaudiya poets wrote works that are nothing less than the consecrated maha-kavyas of Kalidasa and others. The book called Stava-mala contains Srila Rupa Gosvami's poems arranged in different shapes, such as lotus, drum, wheel, etc., in which the exquisite vocabulary, grammatical constructions, and figures of expression are breathtaking. News From Food for All Kings Cross
by Parasuram das
Posted May 13, 2011

HH Mahavishnu Swami and his team "The Salty Dogs" again embark on another adventure on the Jaladuta, this time starting 50km south of Yamunatri and ending up in Vrindavan.

At Yamuna Nagar and Delhi we had press conferences - giving us dozens of newspaper articles and television coverage. Again in Vrindavan we were covered by 3 newspapers and one TV channel.

At one stage the Jaladuta got smashed up and the devotees got stranded on a rock. We managed to tie a rope from a rock to the island and back to the rock, so the devotees could tight-rope across. One slip and your a goner. Mahavishnu Swami at 67 years of age managed it, a green beret would have shaken in his boots.

After Mangal arti we would read from HH Mukunda Goswamis new book, 'miracle on second avenue' - absolute nectar.

Yoga and Krishna Consciousness Join Forces

Yoga and Krishna consciousness join forces, since last few months I have talks back and forth to bring together a summer camp for Kids. The Devananda Yoga studio and Krishna devotees has join forces to work together to remove the darkness and distributed this great knowledge of India

By the grace of Lord Krishna this summer, Miami would hold a Yoga Kids Camp, the camp would be accompany by Krishna Conscious classes, sports, Yoga, Hand Craft, Gardening and much more.

Parents can leave their kids during works hours and pick them up on the end of the working day. This would run like the Summer Camp but with Krishna Consciousness activities. The teachers would be from two different backgrounds , one is Yogini devi dasi, senior disciple of Srila Prabhupada from Argentina. She has work in the USA Guru Kula’s for 20 years. Yogini Devi dasi has a lot of experience with kids, particularly on how to introduce Krishna Consciousness to them. (Click here for the full article)

The Uncommonness of Common Sense
by Gopavrndapala das
Posted May 3, 2011

"We should tax our brains as to what is the best way to present Krsna consciousness to a particular people at a particular time and place." (letter, 13 November 1970) These words of Srila Prabhupada remind us that reaching out to a suffering world is high on his priority list. His call to spread Krsna consciousness is legendary. We risk no heresy by asking the obvious; in fact, preachers should be the first to ask: why doesn't our presentation resonate with more people? And what can we do about it?

Problem. Identifying a problem is always the first step toward solving it. So I'll begin with a blunt fact: the Krsna consciousness movement (at least in the West) has little impact on the public. The vast majority of people, if they know we exist at all, ignore us as they would any insignificant oddity. To most people, Krsna consciousness is irrelevant or ludicrous.

There, I've said it. Call me a troublemaker, but I wish to (Click here for the full article)

Report From the GBC's Strategic Planning Outreach Committee
by Kaisori dasi
Posted May 25, 2011

I don't think anyone in ISKCON doubts the importance Srila Prabhupada gave to preaching. Like his own spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada considered preaching - or outreach, as we tend to call it these days - proof that ISKCON was alive and well. “Preaching is our real business, preaching and distributing books. If your preaching work is strong, then your management of temple affairs will also become automatically very strong. Just like if the head wills it, the hand will move. Preaching is like the head of our KC Society - if the head is removed, the whole body dies.” (Letter, December 8, 1971)

In the 1970s and '80s and following Srila Prabhupada's instructions and lead, ISKCON distributed millions of Srila Prabhupada's books. Harinama parties went out regularly. University programs were thriving in many places. Devotees were encouraged to bring people to the temples, and Sunday feasts were usually well attended.

Then the strong focus on preaching largely abated, although, of course, devotees have continued to preach. ISKCON has had internal work to do. Devotees have moved out of temples and had little time for active preaching, while those who remained were largely engaged in temple maintenance. (Click here for the full article)
