The BBT will be holding their third annual art seminar in Vrindavana, India, from October 20 to November 9, 2009. At last year's seminar, taught by veteran ISKCON artists Dhriti Dasi and Ram Dasa Abhirama Dasa, sixteen international students learned practical techniques as well as the mood essential in producing devotional art.

This year, the course is once again free for the fifteen most-qualified applicants, who will learn BBT Art Department procedures, how to approach painting spiritual subjects, and of course, new techniques. Life Lessons I Learned From Shyama Priya Dasi
by Bhakti-lata Dasi
Posted May 29, 2009

On April 16, 2009, Mother Shyama Priya passed away, lovingly surrounded by family and friends. She was a simple, genuine devotee of the Lord and, for the last 20 years, the backbone of Vaisnava Outreach, Inc, also known as ISKCON Prison Ministry (IPM).

Shyama Priya not only left me the most valuable inheritance I could ever dream of in the form of her service, but she taught me very important life lessons while she was alive, as she was dying, and even after she died.

Although pancreatic cancer is most painful, Shyama Priya never complained; it was easy to forget she was sick at all. (Click here for the full article)

Urban Farming And Self-Sufficiency
by Lalitanatha das (Copenhagen)
Posted May 27, 2009

One of the goals of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness is "teaching a simpler and more natural way of life," as Srila Prabhupada stated it in his seven purposes of ISKCON. This is generally understood to refer to a self-sufficient agrarian lifestyle based on land and cows.

In this year's GBC resolutions 310 and 311 the GBC asks its members to, as far as possible, commit themselves to spend 10 percent of their time helping to develop farm projects. The reasons are obvious. Although some farm projects have had their successes, "there has been a decline in the development of ISKCON farms, and most remaining farms are struggling."

Srila Prabhupada saw farming and cow protection not only as self-sustaining but as a means of generating prosperity for the rest of his society. This has not happened. Many farm communities have evolved into suburban country dwellings with devotees commuting to nearby towns to make their living and farming and cow-protection only continuing to exist due to subsidies from donors. Terrorists Attack ISKCON Temple in Chittagong, Bangladesh

by ISKCON News Weekly Staff on 23 May 2009
Posted May 27, 2009

On May 18, ISKCON News Weekly received a distraught message from an obviously emotional monk at ISKCON's Nandankanan Sri Sri Gour Nitai Ashram in Chittagong, the main seaport of Bangladesh.

On May 14 at 3pm, the devotee said, he and his peers were busy preparing for a weekend festival when fifty to sixty terrorists burst into the temple, brandishing knives and iron bars. They first destroyed the kitchens, devotee accommodation, and Gaura Nitai deities. Then, as the devotees ran into the temple courtyard in a panic, the attackers poured boiling water on them from the balcony, badly burning many.

The terrorists also stole ten to twelve thousand taka (Bangladesh's monetary unit) (Click here for the full article)

Improving the G.B.C.

I wish to thank Chakra for their continuous preaching work.ISKCON is presently entering a serious turning point to ignore this would be foolish, after 31 years of heavy handed rule the G.B.C. is losing its preaching fields due to the ever increasing rise of splinter groups. The recent loss of the Bangalore court case is monumental .The fact that the G.B.C would spend 10 years in battle with devotees of Krsna over politics is a tragedy. To use a mundane expression Srila Prabhupada is turning over in his samadhi. The amount of Laxmi that the G.B.C. lost in this aggressive lawsuit is mind boggling.Laxmi that should have been spent 50% for books and 50% for building and repairing temples. If ISKCON Was Based On Love
by Caitanya das
Posted May 13, 2009

If ISKCON was run based on love rather than politics, then no one would ever leave ISKCON. Rather, there would be lines of people waiting to join our temples. Who would not want to associate with such a wonderful, even magical, group of peopleā

If we replaced our envy with care, our hate with love, and our diplomacy with simplicity, we would become such wonderful people that spontaneously people would be attracted to us. And that would be the best preaching, through our own personal example, character, and integrity. (Click here for the full article)

My Misguidance Under Religious Extremists
by Caitanya dasa
Posted May 6, 2009

Back when I was still a part of ISKCON, I was seriously misguided by a number of ISKCON leaders. They imparted an extremist Taliban-like version of Krishna consciousness to me. Due to their misguidance, I produced a number of extremist writings on my own blog called Hare Krishna Diary.

Many of these writings caused upset to normal, moderate devotees, and so I would like to publicly apologize to them. I am sorry, but I was simply an innocent young devotee who was seriously misguided by a number of religious extremists. (Click here for the full article)

On Thursday a member of Kenya's Sikh community invited devotees to the opening of a college that they had started. I had given him some books a week ago, in which he became very interested. We also told him that we were willing to teach courses on the Bhagavad-gita in his college, and he was very happy. He then invited us to the official opening of the college, mentioning that the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, would be attending. I was very happy; in my mind I thought and prayed that I might present him with a Bhagavad-gita As It Is. (Click here for the full article)

A New Gaudiya Vaisnava Web Site for Ideas And Discussion
by Babhru das
Posted May 30, 2009

We live in times best characterized by the need to define the spiritual, times ripe for the resurgence of metaphysics. Not only has science failed to retire the "why" questions that arise spontaneously in human consciousness, but philosophy has also thought-drained its well dry. Bridging the metaphysics of the East and the philosophical traditions of the West, we propose a return to active discourse between humanity and divinity, which is the essence of revelation. This holds far more potential for fulfilling humanity's essential needs than unbridled intellectual exercise and the licensing of technology to change the nature of nature. In such dialogue, reason shines as an aspect of faith, and faith itself is the illuminating embrace of truth, rather than mere belief. (Click here for the full article)

Worship of Perishable Body
by Gaurav Mittal
Posted May 13, 2009

I would be interested in comments from Chakra readers about this philosophical point.

Kaliyuga gurus are into worship. But the true guru never ask us to worship his body. When saint dies, his body has no existence. One becomes saint when one removes his relationship with body. If we worship his body, then we have not understood basic truths.

Our basic teaching is that our self is not body, mind and intellect. True self due to ignorance associates with body, mind and intelligence. Our true self is full of eternity (sat), knowledge or consicousness (cid) and happiness (anand). Inert matter like body are not us. Once our body is destroyed, it goes back to inert matter and it has no existence. (Click here for the full article)

No Take-Over: Phoenix Temple Remains Safely in ISKCON

In response to Dasaratha Prabhu's article entitled "Hindu Takeover of Phoenix Temple", he and I may have different managerial styles, but I hope we share a keen desire to see the Phoenix temple develop and flourish. The goal must be to promote a Krishna conscious atmosphere in which the Phoenix devotees work together cooperatively. Unfortunately, the ongoing public dispute initiated by Dasaratha Prabhu casts a menacing cloud that can undermine the preaching efforts. Further, the disparaging of devotees who have dedicated their lives to Srila Prabhupada makes as much sense as criticizing someone in the shower for being dirty. (Click here for the full article)

Should ISKCON Issue a Formal Statement On Evolution?
by Chakra
Posted May 29, 2009

Chakra has learned that a GBC proposal has recently been submimtted, requesting the GBC to make an official statement on evolution. This was submitted to coincide with the upcoming publication of a book on "Intelligent design", co-authored by Drutakarma prabhu (with Dr. Behe, a roman catholic, Dr. Wells of the unification church, and Dr. Dembski, an evangelical christian). This proposal is currently being fast-tracked through the GBC approval process, without the usual discussion period. A vote is expected within two weeks.

The Chakra board find it disconcerting that this proposal is being made without allowing the GBC - or the ISKCON membership - any opportunity for thoughtful deliberation. Instead, the authors have asked the GBC members to simply forward their personal concerns to them, so that they can incorporate any feedback that they wish into a final proposal, which will simply require a GBC vote. American Hypocrisy 101: Separation of Church And State
by Prajyumna dasa
Posted May 27, 2009

A lot of countries around the world seem to be have this mistaken belief that in America there is separation of Church and State. Nope, in America, religion is not separate from government.

You see, Thomas Jefferson and the other founding fathers of America were very much influenced by the belief in absolute equality. Thomas Jefferson's brilliance was in shaping the United States around his religion of equality, and then saying that no other religion could come between his religion and the state. Then, like a prophet, he stated his belief so that it would be everyone else's belief also, "We hold it self-evident [for everyone] that all men are created to be equal....blah blah blah." That is when the state religion of America became Equality. (Click here for the full article)

Would We Do It in Front of Srila Prabhupadaā
by Janananda Gosvami
Posted May 21, 2009

We want to come up with something that is practical, enthusing, long lasting, effective, uniting, and all the other positive adjectives you can think of. Especially however, we would like to have standards that would please Srila Prabhupada. After all at the end of the day what matters is: "Would we do it in front of Srila Prabhupadaā" (Kirtan Standard Committee)

As the representative of the KSC - Kirtan Standards Committee I am writing this brief letter We (KSC) don't just want to be seen as "a group of men who keep minutes and waste hours". We hope not! (Click here for the full article)

The Importance of Hari Nama
by Sarvopama dasa
Posted May 18, 2009

Kanva Prabhu writes a really nice article titled If ISKCON Was Based On Love. It really seems to me he is describing the ISKCON I joined back in '71. I was welcomed into any temple I visited in just the way he describes. To even a greater degree I was welcomed by the devotees out on the street any time I happened to come across a Hari Nama party. They smilingly invited me to join in and participate to my heart's content and often even had some sweets to share. What a wonderful experience that was and what an excellent introduction to Krishna consciousness. (Click here for the full article)

Krishna Kathamrita Bindu
by Gopaljiu Publications
Posted May 17, 2009

Sri Krishna Kathamrita Bindu, the free e-magazine from ISKCON Gopaljiu Publications, has just entered its ninth year of circulation, and has reached 200 issues distributed to its ever-growing list of subscribers.

Started in 2001 as a humble attempt to serve Srila Prabhupada and the preachers of the mission of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Sri Krishna Kathamrita Bindu is especially meant for devotees who were interested in going deep into the tradition and literature of Gaudiya Vaishnavism. Our policy from the beginning has been to simply focus on krishna-katha - no politics, exposes, revolutions, or institutional bashing or promotion. Tad-vag-visargo janatagha-viplavo - our conviction is that krishna-katha and krishna-nama automatically changes everything for the better. (Click here for the full article)

The White Eagle Village and Conference Center in Crestone Colorado had been reduced in price by half to 900k. It is a 50 room hotel with three conference rooms and a fully certificd fully equipped restaurant. There are 167,000 square feet in the building with a courtyard on 5 acres. That puts the price at $5 a square foot. In addition in late summer 09 and early fall there is 175K of sugned contracts. If you have ever wanted to have your own center whether the purpose be spiritual, educational, health related or a combination..... this is a grand opportunity. To build a place this size would cost millions of dollars. The place needs a stucco job and other cosmetic upgrades but is turn-key functional. The contracts on it are all spiritual retreats (mostly buddhist) that have come for years and years. They are accostumed to high quality organic vegetarian food and whoever buys the White eagle must fulfill these contracts with integrity. (Click here for the full article)

In Honor of Mother Shyama Priya
by Padmapani das
Posted May 6, 2009

It's with great sadness in my heart that I write these words in honor of Mother Shyama Priya. Over the years, she kindly wrote to me a number of times about her appreciation for The Prabhupada Connection website. I was always grateful to receive her encouraging letters.

Mother Shyama Priya was obviously very devoted to Srila Prabhupada and his great mission of spreading Krishna Consciousness, especially in her chosen service to the ISKCON Prison Ministry. Her heart was full of compassion for the less fortunate and she dedicated much time and effort to helping many souls on their progressive march back home, back to Godhead. Our movement has suffered a great loss by her departure from this world. But her works and example live on for us all to benefit from, and surely she has gone to a better place to continue her service to Srila Prabhupada and the Vaisnavas.
