Prison Program Seeks Volunteers
by Adi Kavi das
Posted May 29, 2007

There are right now many potential and actual devotees in various prisons who need association through letters. I have just started writing to some, and although I sent out letters to nine people I only got three back. However, the amount of sheer bliss I received from the letters of those three people is indescribable.

The ISKCON Prison Ministry needs help writing to these souls. It might take an hour to properly read and comprehend what a new person is asking in his letter about Krishna consciousness and then to respond to that person. The end result is so enlivening -- to get back a letter and see what advancement someone has made.

I am inviting everyone (Click here for the full article)

Measles Cases Delay Hare Krishna Lunches

by DIANE CHUN, Gainesville Sun staff writer

The Hare Krishna Student Center will resume serving lunches on the University of Florida campus May 23, a group spokesperson said Tuesday.

A recent outbreak in measles in Alachua County has been linked to the Krishna community in Alachua. Three students - one at UF and two at Santa Fe Community College - who have come down with measles have ties to that community, which numbers more than 800.

The lunch program ended with the UF semester April 25. Classes will resume at the university the week of May 14.

A statement on the Krishna House Web pages states that the UF student who came down with measles is not involved with preparing or serving Krishna lunch. (Click here for the full article)

Economic Nonviability of Devotee Milk Production
by Madhava Ghosh
Posted May 1, 2007

I was recently forwarded the following email:

"With all of this talk about cows, it sure would be nice to walk into a supermarket and buy a half gallon of milk, or butter, yogurt, cheese, etc. with Lord Krsna's face on the packaging. Why is it, other farmers can produce milk and market it in the stores for millions of people to see and buy, but the cowherd devotees can not do this. What is the problem? Even when Lord Krsna was on the planet, the gopis and cowherd boys had to milk the cows and sell the milk at the market place. What gives?"

Short answer:

Devotees cow herders don't slaughter cows so milk costs 4 times as much to produce in order to protect the cow, and the calf that was needed to be born to start milk production, for their lifetimes. Devotees aren't willing to pay the price. (Click here for the full article)

Believers Stage Joyful Parade
by Madison Park, Baltimore Sun
Posted May 22, 2007

May 20, BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, USA (BALTIMORE SUN) - Baltimore Ratha Yatra a Transcendental Success.

Chanting "Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna," hundreds of believers of the Hindu sect dragged a crimson 30-foot-high chariot cloaked in sunflowers, carnations and roses. Wrapped in colorful clothing, they marched down Light Street yesterday afternoon and ended in the Inner Harbor, stalling traffic and drawing curious stares. This was the local version of Rathayatra, an Indian religious chariot parade.

Figures of the three Hindu deities -- Krishna, Balarama and Subhadra -- are taken from a temple and placed on the elaborately decorated chariot. For believers, pulling the chariot symbolizes bringing the deities into their hearts, said Sunanda Das, a festival coordinator.

"The whole cart pulling is an event that has gone on for thousands of years, and it commemorates Krishna ... and the people's devotion," he said. (Click here for the full article)

The Supreme Court reversed its own judgment made on June 30, 2005, which had enabled the community to use 116 acres (48 hectares) of land and receive the right of ownership after processing respective documents by the registering bodies of the Karasai district. These bodies have never registered the plots in favor of the Religious Organization Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) because the land was withheld by the Karasai District Court at the request of the local Hakim. Dallas Rathayatra
by Michael Balarama
Posted May 7, 2007

Srila Prabhupada said that anyone who sees Lord Jaganatha during Rathayatra will go back to Godhead. So what happened on May 5 will eventually increase the number of souls inhabiting the spiritual world.

Every year the neighbors of the Dallas temple are treated to the Rathayatra parade featuring Lord Jagannatha, Lady Subhadra and Lord Balarama riding on a festive cart pulled by 500 devotees. They travel through a mile and a half of densely populated city streets. Devotees give packaged prasadam to the many lucky bystanders. At the end of the journey there is a large stage and decorations at Kalachandji park.

This year guest speaker HH Giriraj Swami spoke of the glories of Rathayatra as heard from Srila Prabhupada. (Click here for the full article)

Last Night At Kalachandji's
by Pandava vijaya dasa
Posted May 5, 2007

Click Here for a larger image.

[Editor's note: Chakra has received letters from several devotees who were involved in the fundraising campaign and construction of Kalachandji's, pointing out that this was a group effort, involving the entire community of devotees, from the cooks and pujaris, to the grhastas who set aside their lives to go out and collect. Hundreds of devotees went door-to-door, worked malls and offered their life savings to realize this dream. While the editors do not think that the author meant to take credit for the whole fundraising campaign, we agree that it is important to make sure that everyone's efforts are recognized.]

Last night at Kalachandji's restaurant in Dallas Texas was a great experience. Arrived about 6:15 pm-there were maybe 20 people there. All the tables (about 7) were taken. The prasadam was great, pakoras, dahl, 3 kinds of subji and a casserole with lentils on the bottom and mashed potatoes on top. There always is always the great 12 item salad bar. We took the king's table on the top overlooking the entire garden area. It was a bit chilly for me so I asked Vilas (our waitress/devotee from Southern California) to turn on the electric heater that is strategically placedover each table. I remembered Tamal Krishna Goswami so carefully designing this outdoor patio and making it very comfortable with heaters and fans. (Click here for the full article)

Prabhupada And Nrsimha Welcomed By Local Devotees

Posted May 4, 2007

Three events of note occurred at the Spanish Fork Hare Krishna temple last Sunday. At long last Srila Prabhupada arrived in his life sized murthy, so kindly donated by Ram Kishan and Kulwant Khandpur of Los Angeles.

Bhakta Justin and Bhakta Blake drove into the temple parking lot with Prabhupada in the passenger seat of a BMW, to a waiting kirtan party. Prabhupada was taken in circumambulation around the verandah, placed on his vyasasan (temporary, to be replaced by a much grander one soon to come from Madras), given pushpanjali by about 100 devotees, and offered a grand aratik. Cary Hanks, owner of Cary's Floral in Spanish Fork, created a fantastic garland of yellow roses, among many other garlands for the priests and new initiates. Many devotees were visibly moved seeing Prabhupada as fully present for the first time in the State of Utah. (Click here for the full article)

Viewing the shows requires that you have either Microsoft PowerPoint (also available as part of the Microsoft Office suite) or Apple Keynote installed. You also need some kind of music player such as Windows Media Player or Apple QuickTime. (Click here for the full article)

Kazakstan's Krishna Community Faces Eviction

by Abdujalil Abdurasulov in Almaty, The Tharwa Community
Posted May 30, 2007

Analysts have criticised a Kazak Supreme Court ruling against the Hare Krishna community's claim to a farm plot near Almaty, saying it appears to be faith-based discrimination.

In the May 8 decision, judges ruled against the Society for Krishna Consciousness, which was seeking legal backing for its purchase of a piece of farmland which the community now occupies. Many of the analysts interviewed by IWPR argue that the move could damage Kazakstan's image and its international ambitions.

The Krishna society began acquiring land in the Karasai district on the outskirts of Almaty in 1999. Calling itself Sri Vrindavan Dham, (Click here for the full article)

Prabhupada Cable TV
by Causelessmercy.com Webservant
Posted May 21, 2007

The world's first 100% Prabhupada cable TV station is about to be born!

Channel 3 will be Srila Prabhupada's lectures/conversations with synchronized transcriptions playing continuously at random, and will look something like: youtube.com/watch?v=pENRxREorZM

Channel 4 will be Srila Prabhupada's kirtans / bhajans with synchronized lyrics playing continuously at random, and will look something like: youtube.com/watch?v=EK4qHB2cZHs

Although, theoretically, it could be done with one computer, the simplest way to set up the transcendental TV station is with 2 computers. All that you would need are two desktops / laptops, each with Windows 98SE or later, Internet Explorer 5.5 or later, and TV out. (Click here for the full article)

Tucson Earth Day Celebration
by Bhaktin Heather
Posted May 20, 2007

After a long morning of rain showers, the sun appeared and the devotees serving Sri Krishna at the Tucson temple put on their smiles and chanted their way through the annual Earth Day parade in downtown Tucson. The sounds of the mrdanga and kartals could be heard for blocks and the crowd was instantly attracted to the maha mantra being sung on the lips of the blissful devotees.

As we approached the judges stand, an announcer introduced us as the temple devotees from Govinda's Restaurant and Chaitanya Cultural Center. He then invited the spectators to chant with us. Many people tried to join our kirtan and some even knew the words. There were cheers all around. Children danced on the sidewalks. (Click here for the full article)

Later this summer devotees will be setting up Krishna Camp at the annual Burning Man Festival. Burning Man is a week-long festival with international draw, held annually. This years festival dates are August 27 to September 3rd. Its current location is on the playa of the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, 90 miles northeast of Reno. The temporary city (housing 65,300 residents in 2006) is put forth as an experiment in community, radical self expression, and radical self reliance. The culmination of the event is the burning of a large wooden sculpture of a man(ravana) on Saturday night, the sixth night of the event. (Click here for the full article)

Remembering Jayananda Prabhu
by Ajitananda dasa
Posted May 18, 2007

I first became acquainted with Jayananda in the autumn of 1976, in the old New York Temple, located on West 55th Street in Manhattan. I was delighted to be teamed up with Jayananda to preach in several universities.

From the very beginning of our association I sensed something special about Jayananda, and always felt extremely happy and contented in his company. I certainly considered him to be my spiritual superior, but never felt uncomfortable or intimidated in his presence. He was like a kind elder brother. I could sense that his heart was filled with genuine humility and spiritual affection, and this instantly endeared him to me. Never one to condescend, Jayananda would always take the humble position and solicit my advice on matters which he was obviously competent to deal with himself. That was his considerate nature, always depreciating his own importance, while offering all respect to others. (Click here for the full article)

The Mother of All Service Projects
by Caru Das
Posted May 4, 2007

What made this morning's service project here the MOTHER of all projects were 1) the number of volunteers involved, 175 kids and 30 adults, and 2) the high level of organization.

Robert Baird, co director with his brother David (David has been to Vrndavan with Shree Sharma and brought a group last year) of the Historical Arts Restoration Company, called months ago to set up the project. He has visited here several times, sent his adult team leaders out here, drawn up with Vai an extensive materials list, and even made a video of the temple and the projects needing completion. Last Wednesday at an organizational meeting at their stake center in Sugarhouse, Salt Lake City (50 miles away), the kids and team leaders viewed the video to get up to speed. Pollution of India's Rivers
by Payonidhi das

The India government has promised to protect Yamuna devi but has failed miserably. Please check out the government of India's Yamuna Action Plan.

Recently we went to Brahmanda Ghat in Gokula on the other side of Mathura, where Krsna was taken by Vasudeva, as described in Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.3.50: "Because of constant rain sent by the demigod Indra, the River Yamuna was filled with deep water, foaming about with fiercely whirling waves, but as the great Indian Ocean had formerly given way to Lord Ramacandra by allowing Him to construct a bridge, the River Yamuna gave way to Vasudeva and allowed him to cross. ISKCON Leadership Unrecognized
by Jason Wiley
Posted May 1, 2007

I just wanted to say a few things about the leadership that exists in ISKCON today. There are so many extraordinary leaders in ISKCON who have done -- and continue to do -- amazing service for the world.

It is mind-boggling to think about what a difficult task it must be for them to reconcile so many complicated issues. They are trying so hard from the core of their hearts, and they have given their lives to the mission of Lord Caitanya -- many extraordinary personalities with deep levels of faith. Lord Caitanya and Srila Prabhupada are most certainly guiding them.

They are not appreciated enough, collectively, and certainly not on such a forum as Chakra; it seems they are only criticized. (Click here for the full article)
