A Formal Apology from ISKCON GBC is in Order
by Nikunjavasini dasi
Posted May 29, 2005

Now that the litigation has finally been settled with the recent court approval of ISKCON's Chapter 11, can we hear (and see in print) a sincere apology from the Leaders of ISKCON to the former students and their parents? And it would be especially helpful to hear it from those who were in charge of ISKCON back in the 70's and 80's. As the public relations spokesperson Annutama prabhu's apology is helpful, but a formal and public apology is imperative from the Leaders of ISKCON in order for those who have been seriously harmed to heal from their experiences. Sankirtana Party Shines in Palo Alto
Posted May 26, 2005

I received an invitation last week from Vaisesika prabhu about a Sankirtan party on Friday night in Palo Alto, right down the street from Stanford University. It was quite a spectacle, nearly 30 devotees showed up from San Jose, Berkeley, San Francisco, and Berlingame. A large amount of young people joined in the dancing and chanting as we managed to sing and dance for nearly two and a half hours. Satyadeva Prabhu and Vaisesika Prabhu led very nice melodies accompanied by a harmonium and other various instruments. A lot of books when out. Amogalila prabhu and at least three other devotees were passing out "KRSNA Reservoir of Pleasure", a very ecstatic Sankitana party would be putting it lightly. I'd say when others start to join in the singing and dancing; it becomes very special and potent. Hare Krishna! All Glories to Srila Prabhupada!!!

To drink or not to drink: that's the question
by Durdhara das
Posted May 17, 2005

Please do not forget that many people can not digest milk and they will become sick if they drink cow milk, no matter what "vedic" scriptures say. I myself give up milk drinking completely, after 13 years of offering to Krishna and feel better than before, physically and mentally. For me that is sufficient enough.Vedic scriputures can not be transmittet 1:1 from india 2000 years ago to nowadays.Time, place and circumstances are very different. One should accept what is favourable and reject what is unfavourable, this is also a vedic truth. (Click here for the full article)

Posted May 12, 2005

Vrajraj Press is happy to announce the release of the seventh (and final) volume of their English translation of Sri Caitanya-bhagavata. This edition of Sri Caitanya-bhagavata includes verse transliteration, verse translation, and translation of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura's chapter summaries and purports. The previously released first five volumes cover the complete Adi-khanda, Madhya-khanda, and first half of the Antya-khanda, while the newly released volume covers the Antya-khanda, Chapters Five through Ten. The topics covered in this volume include the pastimes of Nityananda Prabhu, the glories of Nityananda Prabhu, pastimes in Sri Gadadhara's garden, Mahaprabhu's water sports in Narendra-sarovara, the glories of Advaita Prabhu, and the glories of Sri Pundarika Vidyanidhi. Sri Caitanya-bhagavata, the authorized biography of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, was written by Srila Vrindavana Dasa Thakura, who is accepted by Gaudiya Vaisnava acaryas as the incarnation of Vyasadeva in Lord Caitanya's pastimes. Sri Caitanya-bhagavata is glorified by Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami in Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, Adi-lila, Chapter Eight, wherein Srila Prabhupada comments on one verse, "...it is a great aid for the common man to read Srila Vrndavana dasa Thakura's Caitanya-bhagavata, for thus he can actually understand devotional service, Krsna, Lord Caitanya and Nityananda." Our Srila Prabhupada - A Friend to All - Early Contemporaries Remember HimOur Srila Prabhupada

Compiled by Mulaprakrti devi dasi

It has taken well over eight years to collect this array of memories of my spiritual master, His Divine Grace Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. I first became interested in the subject of Srila Prabhupada and his relationships with his early friends over twenty years ago, when several of them spontaneously recalled such beautiful memories that I felt my enthusiasm to know Srila Prabhupada increase. Over the years, on frequent travels throughout India, and especially while residing in Vrndavan near Srila Prabhupada's rooms at Radha Damodara Mandira, I came across many Vaisnavas who had known Srila Prabhupada before he left for the West. I questioned them and informally noted their accounts. A pattern emerged. Almost every story I heard from these elderly sadhus, friends, admirers and family members left me feeling more appreciative of Srila Prabhupada's unique position. (Click here for the full article)

Premeditated tree murder in Vrndavan
by Deena Bandhu das
Posted May 7, 2005

All the devotees in Vrindavan are furious. One of their oldest and dearest friends in Vrindavan -- a gigantic, ancient neem tree standing next to Sadhana Kunj -- has been mercilessly butchered by Dr. Samik Rishi Prabhu. Everyone is coming, claiming he outright lied in February, saying he would never cut down this tree -- maybe just cut a few branches which stood in the way of making a guesthouse. I also had advised him not to cut this tree, but to build around it and let it shade the courtyard. (Click here for the full article)

Milk: A Divine Gift
A reply to Durdhara das

by Ananda das
Posted May 1, 2005

Durdhara das is definitly right when he is suggesting that devotees should not consume milk excessively since it is not recommended by our previous acaryas to do so. Indeed excessive consuption of milk products increases the mode of passion and thus makes the mind restless and lusty as Durdhara das has already stated. On the other hand we should not forget about the benefits of milk and derived products. (Click here for the full article)

One day of 100% adherence
by Sridhar Raman
Posted May 30, 2005

Misguided people say that one should accept only those parts of the scriptures that appeal to their rational minds. They also say that scriptures should be understood according to specific social and cultural contexts. But I say this it is heresy of the highest order. I am very happy that Ananta Purusottama Das chose to address this nonsensical view in his enlightening post. In fact, his posting inspired me to attempt adhering fully to vedic codes for one day, or as I call it "one day of 100% adherence". This post is an account of my delightful experiences of adhering fully to Vedic codes for this one without any deviations, and without any consideration of the so-called "social" and "cultural" factors. Regarding "Gurus who abused must be removed"
by Scott Collingwood
Posted May 17, 2005

In reply to Nimai Pandita das' very insightful & caring comments, the individual responsibilty of each devotee of the Lord is to somehow gain the intelligence to respect all Vaisnavas appropriately according to their position. This very unfortunately hasn't been among isKcon's strong points in the past, with GBC men & Gurus blaspheming (apparently for political reasons) such saints as Srila BR Sridhar Maharaja, Srila Gour Govinda Swami and currently Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Goswami Maharaja. This kind of 'indiscrimination' is characteristic of kanistha-adhikari, but has passed as being 'devotional' somehow, and has been institutionalised to some degree. (Click here for the full article)

We had moved there two years prior in an attempt to start a preaching center (which would have been the only one in the state). However, due to a lack of devotee association and a loss of confidence, our enthusiasm gradually waned and doubts about the whole endeavor arose. Final letter from B.T. Swami:
“All we really have is each other”

by Bhakti Tirtha Swami
Posted May 9, 2005

(May 8, 2005) This is the final letter that I will be sending out. Our movement is like a young adult. There are many things that everyone experiences -- individuals as well as institutions -- that are part of the maturation process. As we grow, we also have to deal with growth pains. Often, after these growth pains, we experience the greatest benefits from our struggles, just like a mother who is pregnant and who is bringing forth children. Each time before she gives birth she has to deal with almost unbearable challenges. So we as an institution have experienced so many birth pains and challenges especially each time there is opportunity for major acceleration. Sometimes some of these tests institutionally and individually have heavily bewildered us, seriously wounded us and, unfortunately, sometimes temporarily destroyed us. But we all know that there cannot be serious growth and advancement without austerity.Prabhupada explains in the Bhagavatam that an easy life and Krishna consciousness go ill together. The Subject of Justified Concern...

Malati Prabhu seems very concerned about the "inaccuracies" in the report on child abuse in New Vrindavan. What those inaccuracies are, it seems neither the author nor the rest of us mothers deserve to know. They are not explained, just warned about. (Click here for the full article)

Wrong photo posted
by Chakra Editors
Posted May 27, 2005

Editors' note: We would like to draw our readers' attention to the fact that the photo previously posted together with the article about Krsnapriya prabhu's illness showed the wrong Krsnapriya. The female devotee in that photo, according to two of our readers, is in good health. Chakra's editorial board was unaware that the New Goloka community had two female members named Krsnapriya. Since one of our editors knew that the Krsnapriya in the photo had been sick previously, we assumed that she had again become ill and that the prayer request was on her behalf. We sincerely regret any unnecessary distress this mistake might have caused.

Spending time with our children is bhakti
by Gaurav Mittal

It is not surprising that violent abuse continues in ISKCON. Many people follow weird cults. Are followers of cults responsible for following them? I think they are. They should be intelligent enough not to follow them. Similarly, we should accept our foolishness of following foolish people. Therefore, author should accept her own foolish of leaving her children and following Kirtanananda. (Click here for the full article)

Reply to "Did Srila Prabhupada Really Say That to Upendra?"

Regarding Akruranatha prabhu's article, Did Srila Prabhupada Really Say That to Upendra?, the quote was related to me directly by a very close friend and godbrother of mine, Adi-karta das. There is no doubt in my mind that the quote is accurate because I know Adi-karta very well and he is a thoroughly honest devotee. He would never lie about things Upendra or Srila Prabhupada said. In the article "Recognizing Gay Marriage," Amara dasa states that Srila Prabhupada told Upendra dasa, "Then just find a nice boy, stay with him and practice Krishna consciousness." It is not my intention to weigh in on the gay marriage debate. I only write out of concern for accuracy regarding what Srila Prabhupada actually said. (Click here for the full article)

I would like to respond to Bhakta Pat prabhu's letter on Hridayananda Maharaja's article regarding homosexuality within the devotee community. Before we make our opinion known to the devotee community, it is important we understand what our opinion is in response to, or at least handle our responses with due respect to other devotees, what to speak of a Maharaja who is an elevated Vaisnava devotee of Lord Krishna as well as an extremely sincere disciple of Srila Prabhupada.
