Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Did Not Restrict Sannyasa

Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Never Restricted Sannyasa to Caste Brahmanas

It is not correct to claim, as a recent Chakra article did, that Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami initiated only 18 sannyasis, nor that he only initiated those born in brahmana families into the order of sannyasa. Those who misunderstand the position of nitya-siddha devotees portray the maha-bhagavata as adopting material caste-consciousness to appease society. (Click here for the full article)

Searching For Lost Spiritual Gems
by Bhakta Krish Mistry
Posted March 1, 2003

I, like many devotees, enjoy listening tothe bhajan kirtan of Sriman Vaiyasaki prabhu, one of our movement's foremost kirtaniyas. Some of his older recordings can no longer be found. I have been looking for Vaiyasaki tapes and CDs for a while now and have approached numerous temples and audio stockists of Vaisnava music but cannot seem to find the elusive tapes.

Upon inquiry, Vaiyasaki prabhu replied:

"The tapes you are referring to have been lost in time. I am trying to locate them in good condition so that I may transfer them to CD. As soon as this work is completed, the tapes will be available as CDs on my website (http://www.kirtan.org)."
With his permission I am now widening the search. If temples or devotees have any of the recordings in good condition, would they be willing to lend them, so that they can be re-introduced into circulation in CD form? (Click here for the full article)

MESSAGE FROM THE GBC CHAIRMAN TO THE DEVOTEES OF ISKCON
By Bhakti Caitanya Swami

GAURA PURNIMA 2003

Dear devotees,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

The relationship between the GBC Body and the devotees of ISKCON is
important. I and my fellow GBC executives for this year - Praghosa Prabhu
and Devamrita Swami - want to help cement it by being open and
communicative about our decisions and working with you for the pleasure of
Srila Prabhupada. With this in mind we offer you this letter describing the
proceedings and main decisions of our most recent meetings in Mayapur, from
February 20th to March 1st, 2003.

We came into this year's meeting with the memory of the tragic passing of
His Holiness Tamal Krishna Goswami Maharaja prominent in our minds. Just a
year ago, due to pressure of his academic pursuits, Goswami Maharaja
attended the meetings for the first time in six years. We all looked
forward to the prospect of his continued GBC involvement. His sudden
departure shocked ISKCON and caused tremendous grief and sadness.

As a mark of the great respect and affection that we share for Tamal Krishna
Maharaja, and in recognition of his wonderful service to Srila Prabhupada,
the GBC Body, as this year's first item of business, unanimously passed the
following resolution: (Click here for the full article)

Perspective on the Rg Vedic Purusa Sukta Hymn
by Bhakti Ananda Goswami
Posted March 26, 2003

Hare Krishna ! Jesu ki jaya !
Sri Sri Guru and Gauranga ki jaya !

Dear Devotees,
Please accept my humble obeisances.

Sri Baladeva Purusha as Yupa Dhvaja...Why the Cross is the Symbol of Christ
Understanding the Rig Vedic Purusha Sukta Hymn

At the beginning of every cosmic manifestation, the Second Person of the Godhead, Lord Baladeva, the Servitor Lord, Original Spiritual Master and Savior of all devotees, sacrifices Himself as the cosmic Purusha, for the creation, maintenance and redemption of the entire universe. The Rishis (compare Hebrew Roeh 'Seers') assist Him at His Self sacrifice. The remnants of His sacrifice become the food of all beings. Commemoration of His sacrifice becomes the central rite / act of worship in the whole universe. His consecrated Body / Remnants / Sesha or PURUSHA-IDA / Prasadam are the 'remnants of His sacrifice' sacramental food of the twice born. All of the Devas are born from His sacrifice. From His head the brahmanas are manifest, from His arms the kshatriyas, from His belly the vaishas and from His legs the sudras are manifest. Thus the varnashrama dharma sacramental 'Mystical Social Body' of Purusha is the primal cause of theocentric human civilization and all sacramental social life. (Click here for the full article)

Remembering Bahudaka Prabhu

Certain voices inspire confidence and a sense of well being. Bahudaka's kind, concerned voice and good humor made him a natural leader in the service of Srila Prabhupada's mission. Giving up on Commercial Milk saves cows?

A perspective on whether devotees not using milk from commercial farming would save cows.

There is often the suggestion that members of ISKCON should not be supporting the commercial dairy industry by purchasing its milk and products. Butcher's cha-cha stirs up Hare Krishnas
by Sheree Went
Posted March 1, 2003

An Aussie TV ad showing a bunch of butchers spruiking red meat and dancing and chanting Hare Krishna-style has caused controversy on both sides of the Tasman. The Meat and Livestock Australia ad depicts the butchers dancing up a busy street, clanging knives and mallets and handing out meat recipe cards to passers-by.The advertisement ends to the tune of 70s T-Rex hit "I Love to Boogie".

The ad went to air in Australia last year and drew complaints from Hare Krishnas, Hindus, vegetarians and meat-eaters, claiming it alienated sections of the community.

The complaints were thrown out last March by the Advertising Standards Board, which found "most people would regard the advertisement as humorous". But now the ad has screened in New Zealand and has been causing controversy since the NZ Beef and Lamb Board put it to air two nights ago. (Click here for the full article)

Cows and the milk industry
by Ananta Purusottama das
Posted March 26, 2003

Dear Prabhus.

Having read all articles on the subject, I can see the points are fair in both cases, but the sad reality is we don't just buy milk, most of us go to the big supermarkets, which sell so much meat, you could say we are indirectly supporting the operation of these massive corporations. You could say when we pay for any services, commodity or goods of any sort, the recipient uses that money for sense gratification. I heard a morning walk where Prabhupada said that people who do some service, even though we pay them, make a little advancement as what they have done helps the devotees in their service, so perhaps we can also look at the positive. Ask how many devotees where leather shoes and think nothing of it, (I don't and haven't since I can remember) I am sure there are many small things we can try to improve on. Did all the milk Srila Prabhupada consume come from our own cows, it would be interesting to know. (Click here for the full article)

NEW MEMORIES BOOK
VOLUME 2

During the 25th Anniversary of the Disappearance of Srila Prabhupada, Mother Prasanti described that day as her favorite day of the year because that is when stories about His Divine Grace are told. As in the early days when a devotee would return from being with Srila Prabhupada and everyone would gather around wanting to hear the nectar from his or her association with the pure devotee, so it is now that we have the chance to hear from all those devotees in Volume 2 of "Memories-Anecdotes of a Modern Day Saint". As Srila Prabhupada has given us the Krishna Book to learn about Krishna as a Person so we can develop our love for Him, we now have the opportunity to develop our love for Srila Prabhupada by hearing about his glories and personal instructions that cannot be found in any of his other books. This 400 page softbound book contains photos of every devotee who tell their memories from the video series Pt. 16 through Pt. 28. Srila Prabhupada on the use of the address "Prabhu"

1. Even the Spiritual Master sees his disciples as "prabhu"

We are teaching our disciples to address amongst themselves "prabhu." This is not a new thing; this is very old. Now Narada is addressing Vyasadeva as "prabhu," his disciple. His disciple he's addressing as prabhu. So we should give respect. Just like we address, "Kirtanananda Maharaja." Although he's my disciple, the respect should be given. Here, see, Narada is addressing Vyasadeva: "Prabhu." "My dear prabhu." (lecture, SB 1.5.1-4, May 22, 1969) (Click here for the full article)

Prominent Link Increases Appreciation of Gurus
Malini d.d.
Posted March 8, 2003

I am grateful for this opportunity to express myself on the topic of Srila Prabhupada's position and presence in our life. From the time that I received formal initiation I have denied myself the right to express, or even accept, my experience regarding gurus. Pressures have been so strong that I've felt inadequate, deficient, and isolated. Now I feel at liberty to acknowledge and connect with my experience and live blissfully with it. I tried hard to fit in the generally accepted ISKCON model of the guru- disciple relationship, but I failed. In endeavoring to conform to this model I felt fake. You may reject or label me, and thereby strengthen your convictions in the status quo. Or, as is my hope and prayer, you may recognize that I'm genuinely sharing insights and realizations that are important for me, and that are relevant for the progressive development of Srila Prabhupada's movement.

When I joined I was given to the care of a senior mataji. She introduced me to Srila Prabhupada the way people do when they want two persons to have a relationship. She was expert at bringing Srila Prabhupada alive in my life. She taught me how truly and comfortably I could go to Srila Prabhupada in any of his manifested forms for shelter. I brought anything to him; mental problems and speculation, shame and desire. He taught me and cared for me from the very beginning. He has been present in my life ever since and I can always count on him. He won't disappoint me. (Click here for the full article)

I just wanted to reach some of you who may need Sudarshan Chakras for their homes or temples, and let you know that in a matter of some weeks I'll be moving permanently to India with my family. Is There A Bright Side to the Editorial Revision Controversy?
by Akruranatha Dasa
Posted March 1, 2003

The ongoing debate over editorial changes to Srila Prabhupada's books is just one of the many issues that seem to be causing divisions between devotees these days (it's not called the "Age of Quarrel" for nothing). It is evident that thoughtful, sincere devotees with the best of intentions have very strong feelings on both sides of the issue, and the rhetoric understandably gets heated, sometimes unfortunately to the point of personal attacks and insults.

Can we find some benefit in this debate? A few years ago Srutakirti Prabhu weighed in on a public internet bulletin board discussion about "rtvik" initiation, by remarking that he saw the debate as evidence of Srila Prabhupada's amazing ability to keep us intensely interested in topics related to Krishna consciousness. I was awestruck by Srutakirti's transcendental vision, where I had only been able to see an unpleasant public argument.

Taking inspiration from that occasion, I feel it is worthwhile to look for some benefits from this editing debate. I expect other devotees will be able to find more potential benefits and elaborate on them more fully than I can. (Click here for the full article)
