2nd Report From the GBC Strategic Planning Meeting
by Kaisori dasi
Posted March 28, 2011

If you missed part one of this series, you can find it here: (www.dandavats.com/?p=9337). In the previous section I described the Succession Committee and its progress. Here I would like to acquaint you with the work of the Education Committee.

A number of the GBC's Strategic Planning Committees have broad international mandates. The mandate of the Outreach Committee, for example, covers all aspects of preaching - from how to encourage book distribution to congregational preaching to how to effectively present Krishna consciousness in university settings to all other aspects of outreach.

Similarly, education in ISKCON is a very broad mandate. ISKCON is primarily an educational institution. In his incorporation papers for ISKCON, dated July 11, 1966, Srila Prabhupada listed ISKCON's seven purposes, five of which directly refer to the propagation of knowledge. (The other two provide support for that education.) (Click here for the full article)

New Book Release
by Isvara Dasa
Posted March 21, 2011

It’s with great pleasure that we announce the release of Sri Krishna Vijaya, a unique Vaisnava scripture depicting the pastimes of the Supreme Lord Krishna, as He appeared on earth more than five thousand years ago.

The book was written originally in Bengali language more than five hundred years ago, and was so much loved by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Mahaprabhu expressed His appreciation of the book as follows:

guṇarāja-khāṅna kaila śrī-kṛṣṇa-vijaya tāhāṅ eka-vākya tāṅra āche premamaya

Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu then said, “Guṇarāja Khān of Kulīna-grāma compiled a book named Śrī Krishna Vijaya, in which there is a sentence revealing the author’s ecstatic love of Krishna.” (Click here for the full article)

Harivamsa Prabhu’s Departure
by Titiksu das and Damodara Krishna das
Posted March 18, 2011

Harivamsa prabhu serving as cart guide at Rathayatra.

With sadness we received the news of the passing of Harivamsa das on Wednesday, March 9. He was a very dedicated devotee of Sri Sri Radha-Gokulananda at Bhaktivedanta Manor in the United Kingdom for many years. We will leave it to his close friends and mentors at the Manor to describe the glories of that service. But what many devotees may not be aware of is that he also performed significant service to our London Lord Jagannatha.

For the first time in 2001, we were able to hold the Snana Yatra of Lord Jagannatha in a large marquee at Bhaktivedanta Manor. With more than 1,200 devotees bathing Their Lordships, a queueing system had to be implemented. Harivamsa prabhu enthusiastically came forward to help organise and assemble the barriers and assist the devotees in the queue. He also organised donation boxes and took care of all the donations. After the festival he would help clear up and clean until late in the evening. He continued this service until 2008 when Snana Yatra returned to the London Temple at Soho Street.

In 2004 we were fortunate in being able to offer Their Lordships three chariots for the first time (Click here for the full article)

Gaura Purnima at Murari Sevaka
by ISKCON Murari Sevaka
Posted March 4, 2011

You are invited to celebrate Gaura Purnima at Murari Sevaka

We will be celebrating on Sunday March 20, 2011 Gaura Purnima is the annual celebration of the appearance of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. “Gaura” refers to Caitanya Mahaprahu’s golden complexion and “Purnima” refers to the full-moon night on which He appeared. On this special day, Krishna personally appeared over 500 years ago in the year 1486 AD in Sridhama Mayapur, West Bengal, India. He was known as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and acted as His own devotee. He came to this world to spread love of God through the congregational chanting of the holy names of the Lord.

Sri Caitanya’s teachings cover three main topics:

1. Knowledge of the soul’s relationship with Krishna ,

2. The method of awakening that relationship, and

3. The awakened state of that relationship (pure love of God.) (Click here for the full article)

The Case of "Normal" Evil
by Niscala dasi
Posted March 2, 2011

Part one of this series examined faith and paranormal evil. This part of the series examines a greater and more common challenge to faith- the existence of evil itself- outside of paranormal activity. This is a complex subject which cannot be broached in a short essay, hence this essay is a little longer than the last one…

For both devotees and non-devotees the greatest challenge to faith has always been the existence of evil. If God is all-good and all-powerful, then why does He allow evil in the world? Armed with the philosophy of the gita, we have an answer for that- past life karma, yet we also know that Krsna steps in at different times to protect His devotees from evil, whether or not their past life karma justifies it. The real deal-breaker for many people is the circumstance where a devotee is praying for deliverance and nothing happens, and he is tortured in a helpless condition by demons. Such happened in the case of the Jews at the hands of the Nazis, and such also happened with many of the gurukulis, at the hands of their teachers. One only has to empathize even slightly with them, to have one’s faith challenged to the core. How could you believe or love a God to whom you prayed, and He did nothing? Your Experiences With Lord Krishna
by Sri Nandanandana dasa (Stephen Knapp)
Posted March 22, 2011

I am presently putting a book together about the many experiences that people have had with Deities. I have much of the traditional information regarding temples across India, but I also know that there are many devotees throughout the world who have had, or continue to have, or who know about additional stories of personal experiences of reciprocation with Lord Krishna or any of his many Deity forms.

Such experiences with Krishna can include dreams of the Lord in which he said something or gave you an important sign, personal guidance that affected your life, or personal prayers that were answered. It can also include ways that he showed himself to you, ways your life has changed because of his intervention, or experiences you had with his Deity form.

If you or anyone you know have had any personal experiences or reciprocation with Lord Krishna and would like to share them with others, please write down the details and send it to Sri Nandanandana dasa (Stephen Knapp) at (Click here for the full article)

Prayers, mantras and Gayatris: a Collection for Insights, Protection, Spiritual Growth, and Many Other Blessings

Using mantras or prayers can help us do many things, depending on our intention. First of all, it is an ancient method that has been used successfully to raise our consciousness, our attitude, aim of life, and outlook, and prepare ourselves for perceiving higher states of being.

The Sanskrit mantras within this volume offer such things as the knowledge and insights for spiritual progress, including higher perceptions and understandings of the Absolute or God, as well as the sound vibrations for awakening our higher awareness, invoking the positive energies to help us overcome obstacles and oppositions, or to assist in healing our minds and bodies from disease or negativity. Cervical Cancer Claims Bhadra Priya Prabhu
by Nirmala dasi
Posted March 3, 2011

Bhadra Priya dasi joined ISKCON in 1972 in Montreal, Canada. Shortly thereafter she moved to the temple in Toronto, where she was initiated by His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada in 1973. She did many different types of service including nama-sankirtan and book distribution. One special service that she was known for was cooking milk sweets for Radha Ksira Cora Gopinath for up to ten hours each day. She was really absorbed in this service and was especially happy when she was able to create a different type of sweet for the Lord's pleasure.

She travelled to India with Laxmimoni and spent several months there. She helped Laxmimoni make a vyasasana for Srila Prabhupada in New Delhi. She took many photographs of Srila Prabhupada, and one day he stopped and asked her about her camera.

She also met Yamuna devi at this time and was engaged in washing Yamuna's cooking pots in the Yamuna river with sand and frayed ropes. (Click here for the full article)

Due to the help of Sivarama Swami, Niranjana Swami and Gaura Sakti, leader of New Vraja Dham farm and Hungary, we were able to make contact with Balabhadra and he was eventually able to receive proper medical attention. We now know that it is not a stroke, or heart attack but something with his back. After his MRI in Kiev on March 21 we hope to know more. I am going to Kiev to bring him back on Thursday (March 24), and then we will see what can be done.

I will not be responding to e-mail till the end of the week. (Click here for the full article)

Biggest Earthquake in Japan Combined Krsna's Servants
by Naganatana das
Posted March 21, 2011

We Japanese have been facing the most difficult period caused by the biggest earthquake in Japanese history. As rescue works move ahead, the state of disaster has been revealed gradually. Those engaged in helping refugees, including doctors and government representatives from domestic and abroad, are stunned by the unbelievable sight of devastation. Devotees in Japan are safe though some experienced the strong shake and took shelter in Tokyo temple. Besides, certain areas are being polluted by the radioactivity caused by nuclear plants damaged by the same earthquake.

Certainly, as Sri Krsna states in Bhagavad-gita, this world is the place of trouble and misery, duhkarayan, but it is our duty, as servants of Lord Krsna, to show compassion and pray for those suffering people so that they receive benediction from Him that they have been searching for millions of year in the brahmandas. Community Improvement Survey
by Niscala dasi
Posted March 17, 2011

I was recently offered to take part in an anonymous survey for improving our local ISKCON community. I had some ideas about that, which I am posting here for discussion, as I think the problems our local community is having, are not unique. It is also a universal discussion, in that I am not aiming to provide a solution to any specific problem, or to problems in general, but to change our approach to how we deal with problems. As it is said: "problems do not go away by ignoring them", and I might add: "...or even by chanting Hare Krsna" for there are some problems, most of them, actually, that Lord Krsna wants us to face, and solve as a service to Him. Even in Krsna's pastimes, He wanted Arjuna to do the fighting- not for ambition, but for Him alone.

The Survey

1. What are the strengths of the local community?

The location, the size- both of land and number of devotees, and the respect, in general, given to Srila Prabhupada. (Click here for the full article)

Sharing Krsna consciousness with the inmates is always enlivening, but, as in like any other preaching, it is even more ecstatic when the recipient is particularly receptive and appreciative. Bhakta Richard is such an ideal candidate and he is reaping the benefit of his sincere practice of bhakti-yoga. Please take the time to enter his world and you will see how Prabhupada and Krsna are reciprocating with his desire to please and serve Them.

1-18-11 Dear Bhakti-lata,

Hope all is going well for you. I’m still here in segregation but I’m safe and that’s what’s important. [My present] cellie is a very negative person but at least he’s not a bully. Practicing KC has gotten me to a point that I don’t even hate those bullies back, ya know? A mosquito got in my cell the other day and I wouldn’t kill it (my cellie did though). I don’t even want to hurt my enemies so I know Krsna has effected profound changes to my spirit. As you can probably tell, I’ve been regularly chanting again. It makes such a difference to my well-being that I have to wonder why I’ve neglected it. I say the Panca-tattva mantra as you instructed and I find that enhances the rounds. Bhaktivedanta Manor Looks to the Future

Bhaktivedanta Manor Review (.pdf)

Over the past year Bhaktivedanta Manor has conducted a Review of all of its activities by speaking to a breadth of devotees across its key community groups – the review, headed up independently has been a project that has unfolded into a wide ranging review of the practices at the temple and feelings of devotees who visit, work and serve around the temple.

The Review has taken close to 5000 hours of interviews, discussions and workshops and the attached PDF document is the culmination of that work. It also begins the process of putting in place changes as well as further building on the consultation process through istagoshtis. This is a bold step for Bhaktivedanta Manor, and the Review has brought up both uncomfortable and pleasing points allowing managers and those involved in the Manor to take this to the next step. Vintage Gita for Quick Sale
by Deron Gille
Posted March 3, 2011

I have an original Bhagavad-gita As It Is from 1968 for sale. It is the exact copy Mukunda and Janaki took with them when they went to London in ’68. It even has their signatures in it. It's in good condition.

I'm selling it for a hundred dollars, unless someone can afford more, and unless I can sell them separately, I'm going to throw in the vinyl records I previously had for sale. The records are all of Mangalananda or Michael Cassidy's records and a few other odds and ends — really cool records and priceless devotional items.

I just went through a bad breakup, so I had to move across country, and I am currently living in my truck in freezing temperatures in Minnesota. I start a new job tomorrow, and I need gas and food money and other things until I get my first paycheque. If anyone is interested, I'd really appreciate it. It's an emergency. A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck just south of Christchurch, New Zealand on February 22, followed by at least 20 aftershocks. Many buildings have been destroyed, and the deaths of 72 people have been confirmed, with hundreds of injuries and hundreds more still missing.

ISKCON's temple in Christchurch was heavily damaged by the quake and will likely have to be demolished. A chimney fell on the outside of the building. Inside, an altar toppled over and the temple's beautiful Gaura-Nitai Deities, worshipped for 25 years, were broken, as Karunika prabhu told her guru H.H. Indradyumna Maharaj. Thus far there have been no reports of injuries or deaths among New Zealand devotees, according to temple president Ramanuja das.

Prananatha das, a New Zealand devotee who operates a business in the city, is now accepting donations to aid in the temple reconstruction. Until the devotees are able to establish a more formal channel, donations may be sent to (Click here for the full article)
