Released But Not Yet Free
by Bhakti-lata Dasi, ISKCON Prison Ministry
Posted June 24, 2010

By Lord Caitanya’s mercy, hundreds of inmates come in contact with, appreciate, and start practicing Krsna consciousness. They very seriously take up reading Prabhupada’s books and chanting Hare Krsna. Krsna consciousness becomes the lifesaver they hold on to with great eagerness.

Prison environments are often very precarious. One inmate recently wrote me that in the five years he’s been incarcerated, he has seen more death than in his entire life before that. He is in constant danger and Lord Nrsimadeva plays an important role in his devotional life.

In such unstable surroundings, inmate bhaktas form a strong bond with devotees through the IPM correspondence program. It is not rare that devotees are their only contact with the outside world. (Click here for the full article)

The Protection of Our Elderly- Who is Responsible?
by Niscala dasi
Posted June 23, 2010

As lifespan increases, and as the “baby boomers” near retirement age, many countries of the world, who think it is important, are straining under the weight of supporting their elderly. We also have our “baby boomers” – those who joined ISKCON at age 17-25 in the boom time of ISKCON: Prabhupada’s time, and shortly after. A huge number of devotees are now entering their sixties, and are reaching a very vulnerable point in their lives. If they have achieved a position of authority in ISKCON, their financial security is assured. If they left ISKCON while still young, and pursued education and career, again, they are assured of financial security, and may even be quite wealthy, as their superannuation matures... But a great number of devotees gave up all chance of career to surrender to this movement and to do humble and menial services, being not ambitious. They are now at the mercy of various temples, not all of which are compassionate to the needs of the elderly, and even fewer, ready to give them practical assistance. Vaisnavi Retreat in Brazil
by Amrita Gopala dasi
Posted June 16, 2010

Often the word ``retreat`` denotes rest and relaxation. This year´s Vaisnavi Retreat in Vrajabhumi Asram, Brazil did afford devotees the opportunity to take a break from the fast-paced life of work and Rio de Janeiro gridlock. Yet the twenty devotees who joined the two-day program were treated to a feast of devotional activity. The two prominent R&Rs were ``recharge`` and ``rev-up.``

Held over the last weekend in May (chilly in this part of the world!), the theme of the sanga intended to challenge devotee women to understand their unique contribution to the Hare Krsna movement. Balancing philosophical talks with creative arts, the devotees sought to explore their potential and expand their understanding of the breadth of bhakti-yoga. The workshops and talks were conducted in an interactive style to encourage devotees to develop confidence and conviction in assimilating the message of the scriptures. Preaching as a way of life was very much emphasized throughout the presentations. (Click here for the full article)

We are very happy to announce to the whole community of devotees the construction of a small but very important temple for Srimati Simantini Devi at Sri Jagannath Mandir compound in Rajapur, Sri Mayapur dham. The construction will be under the guidance and supervision of His Grace Jananivas Prabhu, the head pujari of Sri Mayapur Candrodya Mandir. It is dedicated to that great Vaishnavi of the Lord, Srimati Simantini Devi, who is none other than Srimati Parvati Devi. She will perform the function of accepting prasada before distributing, as Vimala Devi in Puri Dham. I am attaching two pictures to give an idea of the beauty and size of the murti and this wonderful temple.

Eco-Village and CSA Farm at New Talavan
by Bhakta BC
Posted June 17, 2010

A group of devotees is forming at ISKCON New Talavan in Carriere, MS to create a eco-village on 35 acres (14 hectares) of fertile rural land leased from the temple. They are currently running a 1.5-acre (0.6 ha) organic vegetable farm for the devotee neighborhood as a community-supported agricultural (CSA) operation and hope to expand this effort through the eco-village.

We believe New Talavan has the most potential for this type of development in the USA, with a huge amount of acreage, plenty of water and pasture for cows, year-round growing seasons and all-flat, fertile land ideal for agriculture.

Devotees are now living on the 35-acre parcel, which includes 25 acres (10 ha) of pasture and a 1-acre (0.4 ha) spring-fed pond. With dairy cows, honeybees and hundreds of fruit-bearing trees, New Talavan will also be growing wheat this winter. (Click here for the full article)

This is in response to the inaccurate and misleading Public Notice issued on May 21, 2010 in some newspapers by the agents of ISKCON-Mumbai.

The information provided therein is false, and has been released with the mischievous intention of misleading the public at large. We issue the following clarification.

Claim on ISKCON-Bangalore Temple Property

The City Civil Court, Bangalore on April 17, 2009 declared, “The Plaintiff (ISKCON-Bangalore registered in 1978 under Karnataka Societies Registration Act) is declared as the absolute owner of the ISKCON Temple and land at Hare Krishna Hill, Chord Road, Rajajinagar, Bangalore 560010 and is in possession and enjoyment of them, being an independent legal entity.” Further the court decreed, “ISKCON-Mumbai are restrained by means of permanent injunction from interfering with the ISKCON-Bangalore peaceful possession and enjoyment of the temple properties or attempting to take possession or control them.” Aggrieved by this order the agents of ISKCON-Mumbai are putting up such mischievous Public Notices to tarnish the image of ISKCON-Bangalore. Honest Householders, Not Pretend Brahmacaris
by Name withheld by request
Posted June 7, 2010

A while back, many children (now adults) who grew up with silenced abuse in the gurukulas, spoke out publicly, sharing their previously untold stories of abuse and mistreatment which happened in the name of spirituality. Sharing such stories is important, because it is healing for those who were silenced, and because it educates others to help prevent such horror stories from occurring again. When people are silenced, they internalize the pain, and blame themselves for what happened, especially when the abusers continue to hold positions of leadership within the movement, gaining fame and glory despite what they did. When people speak out, the pain has a way of being released, and the healing process can begin.

There is another group of people within ISKCON who have been silenced, and I think it is time to create a forum for women to speak out (Click here for the full article)

ever soon there could be no rain at all

all life will be consumed in her sorrow
all life lost is her manifest sorrow

Why Not Store Bought Milk
by Mathura dasa
Posted June 15, 2010

If we’re going to offer milk to Krsna it benefits the cow. Well on some level, maybe, If you are lucky. Lets say I enslave you, I take your children and your hard earned money by force, treat you inhumanly and then slit your throat, but don’t worry I’ll offer your $ to my home deities before I spend it… Is that actually benefiting the cow? Krsna’s cows are benefited by serving and being served, Krsna actually serves the cows himself with love and care!

The proper thing is to get a cow or help someone else get one and pay them the price it takes to protect the cow then you will be benefiting the cows. The direct experience of our animal protection project is that the cows actually protect our family by giving us milk that can be transformed into so many things even the all mighty dollar. In 2009, fifteen of Srila Prabhupada’s disciples along with 300 devotees joined us in Boston to celebrate the 44th anniversary of Srila Prabhupada’s arrival in America. This year we hope to increase the size of the festival and continue to increase year over year in preparation for the 50th anniversary festival in 2015. This should be an event every ISKCON devotee aspires to attend. We ask all of Srila Prabhupada’s disciples to please bless us as we develop this momentous event and to please make ever endeavour to attend this annual festival commemorating A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada’s arrival in the Western world. (Click here for the full article)
