Paris Temple by Srinath dasa Posted June 24, 2008 From India to Ireland, Scotland to South Africa, America to Australia, Moscow to Mauritius, ISKCON (popularly known as the Hare Krishna Movement) is accepted as a bona fide religious organization around the world and is recognized among learned academics (e.g. University of Cambridge, England). In France however, the influential anti-cult bureau (funded by the French government) has successfully introduced laws and policies constricting the activities of minority religious organizations and in 1989, has unfairly and unlawfully branded the Hare Krishna movement a dangerous cult, thereby creating unfounded fears in the public against us and curtailing our efforts to serve French society. But there are winds of change Kirtanananda Swami Has Cancer by Patita Pavana das Posted June 22, 2008 We have just received a letter that Kirtananada Swami has lung cancer and will begin chemotherapy. Whenever we hear the name "Kirtanananda" there are multifarious caveats dealing with his involvement with all the allegations made in Hubner's "classic expose" Monley On A Stick about the New Vrindavana legal (and illegal!) cases, ...and caveats aplenty are seen even the letter requesting prayers for K just received. K Swami is a hot potato, but a Vaishnava sent me a letter and it deserves a Vaishnava response for which I am happy to oblige. Seeing Spiritual India, a Guide to Temples, Holy Sites, Festivals And Traditions by Stephen Knapp Posted June 18, 2008
India has one of the most ancient cultures on the planet that is still a living and dynamic tradition. Many of the customs and rituals that we can see today have existed for thousands of years. This is what makes this country so interesting and draws so many people to it. It is the culture of yoga, meditation, gurus, spiritual philosophy, ancient festivals, holy men and women, sacred mountains and rivers, and the potential for becoming more aware of who we are and the purpose of life. Things Change; Avoid Silly Controversy by Ramachandra Goswami Posted June 15, 2008 Times have changed. Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami was born and grew up in an age in Bengal which could almost have been a different planet than today's modern India. When I was first in India 30 years ago, to see an Indian girl in western dress was unusual. Unmarried girls wore salwar kurta, and married women wore saris, unless they were Muslims or were from the northern states. The ladies of Prabhupada's era wore the Bengali style of sari, which is very modest. I remember that in Vrindavan 30 years ago brahmin women would wrap a white shawl over their saris if they went out -- even in summer. On his way home, however, he happened to stop in Bihar, where several of Srila Prabhu-pada's disciples from ISKCON Calcutta were attending a mela. Anandamaya spoke to Tamal Krishna Goswami, and Achyutananda and Guru-kripa Prabhus, and was so fascinated with their philosophy that he followed them to Calcutta. "I joined ISKCON there in 1972, and have lived in India ever since," he says. Whether it is in the extreme (as here) or the more common 'moderate' form of denigration (women are this, women are that...), it still diminishes enthusiasm and faith in Krsna consciousness and in being able to attain the goal of spiritual life. I directly experienced this myself and moreso through the confusion and pain of many other devotee women. It was with this concern that I spoke with HH Bhakti Tirtha Maharaja on how to help the large numbers of devotee women whose sincere endeavors in spiritual life are adversely affected by having to bear the demeaning attitudes stemming from spiritually immature male egos. Radha-Govinda Posted June 9, 2008 A wonderful book "Man Woman Dilemna: Relationship Truth for Troubled Times," written by Srila Prabhupada's disciple, Yogamaya Dasi (Faith) and her husband Justice Collier, takes the dilemmna out of the male/female relationship and gives formulas for living in an enlivening, successful and wonderful marital relationship with your spouse. Inspired by the Divine realm, the authors themselves attributing this - I believe Srila Prabhupada has had a huge part in contributing - this book presents in a conversational format, so many facts to enlighten in this regard. Then Maharaja launched into an interesting explanation which I will now attempt to briefly summarize. The Gurv-astaka prayers by Visvanath Chakravarti Thakur which are sung every morning in all ISKCON temples are traditionally sung in two distinct melodies: one for the morning and one for the evening. For those unaware, the morning melody is the one which is always used at the beginning of all mangal arotis. It is similar to the tune in which many "morning" songs are sung: Arodaya-kirtan, Jiv Jago and Vibhavari Sesa being some examples. Unity in Diversity by Abhay Caran Dasa, North American Secretary WVA-VVRS Posted June 28, 2008 This morning I was thinking about some of the envisions by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur, one in particular was that there be Judges with tilak consulting the Vedas to give truth? There are many steps that have to be taken amongst us in unity before that will ever happen, 1st and foremost who would respect Vaisnavas quarreling in courts over the properties given by the Lord for preaching without our personal interests ? Or abuse of ones power, quarreling or rhetoric on the internet or in papers and literature from some who attempt to minimize others, with their tikas demonstrate that (Click here for the full article) Toronto Ratha Yatra 2008 by ISKCON Toronto Posted June 27, 2008 ISKCON Toronto would like to invite all devotees around the world to experience the bliss of unadulterated kirtan as their Lordships Jagannath, Baladev and Subhadra adorn the streets of Toronto for the 36th year on July 19th and 20th! Mother-Law-In, Father-Law-In by Niscala dasi Posted June 24, 2008 The guidelines of our transcendental father are given to us in sastra and in the other worlds scriptures, summarily, to be kind, loving, compassionate and thoughtful, and to this end to strive to be self-controlled, disciplined, responsible, and in general to think in terms of what is beyond oneself, to think and to work for the good of all. What of the laws of the mother, then? These are of course, the laws of nature, and they work in harmony with the laws of the father, but whereas fatherlaw only applies to humankind, motherlaw applies to all species. They are ingested with her milk, that is, to live and to die in order to feed and benefit others. This is most apparent in vegetation simply because we are animals and from our viewpoint, plants are indispensible. Yet from the point of view of the humble herb, without the exhaled breath of animal life, the atmosphere would soon be starved of CO2 emissions and all plant life would die. Caring neither for common public opinion nor tomorrow, the devotees danced and danced; moving in effortless unison, their bodies formed complex geometries that would make ardent string theorists sit up, and pay attention. Little did we know that in a few hours, another wave of ecstasy was coming. On Sunday June 14th a Maha Maha Harinam was held at the Sri Sri Radha Govinda Mandir. Some 1500 devotees spent an evening of super ecstatic dancing to rich melodies of sweet kirtan; even temple floor under the feet of the dancing devotees oscillated as if it was being struck by the shear wave front of a crust shattering earthquake. Beware of Canvassing Devotee by Sandamini devi dasi (Temple President - Tucson, Arizona) Posted June 18, 2008 While my husband and I were off preaching in Northern Arizona for a few days, I got a call from one of our temple devotees that a devotee who used to live at New Vrindavan named Jaya Rishi das, was mingling with our temple new devotees and guests, trying to convince them to go with him to Badger, California to see Narayan Maharaj. At first he didn't expose his agenda. and as he said that he himself was a Prabhupada disciple on his way to Los Angeles (he made it sound like he was on his way to the L.A. Iskcon temple), our temple devotees allowed him to stay over night and even invited him to give Bhagavatam class the next morning. wesley@wesleycamp.org The Dogs May BARK... by Amara dasa Posted June 7, 2008 I appreciated my Godsister Jadurani's rebuttal to the foolish video posted on YouTube.com. I suppose one of the unfortunate side effects of the Internet is that anyone can post anything at all, even if it is completely untrue, adulterated or disrespectful. One of my favorite quotes from Srila Prabhupada has always been, "The dogs may bark, but the caravan passes" and in this regard it is appropriate that the author of the offensive video goes under the name "Barking Dog." Plenty of time, one would think, for a contemplative assessment of the incredible damage this blog has done in ways too numerous to even count. But has the worldwide Society of devotees heard one single word of contrition from Maharaja, what to speak of any sort of apology? No. Not a single word. And the "Hare Krishna Diary" goes on and on, taking Srila Prabhupada's statements out of context as an excuse to vilify and oppress women and to insult and alienate numerous other Vaisnavas who strive to serve the sankirtana movement of Lord Caitanya. The Londoners are used to seeing juggernaughts rumbling through their streets, but this was a very different kind of heavy traffic. It was a riot of colour in the heart of the capital - three 40-foot-high wooden chariots pulled from Hyde Park to Trafalgar Square, accompanied by a colourful crowd singing, chanting and dancing their way along the route. Britain's Hare Krishnas were holding their 40th annual Rathayatra Carnival of Chariots, a street festival which brings together a mixture of devotees and bemused onlookers.
