Prabhupada And the Vedas

Hare Krsna. I want to ask a question: Were Srila Prabhupad's teachings based on the Vedas, or is there a more appropriate answer? Thanks.

Bhaktivedanta Purports Illuminate Vedas
By Ananda das

Visakha dasi asked about Srila Prabhupada's teachings being grounded in the Vedas. Visakha prabhu's question is a good one. Many devotees may have differing perspectives on this, but one way to look at it is that the Vedas are a large branch of knowledge. Traditionally, students would take 12 years to master one of the Vedas, or 48 years to master the Rg-, Yajur-, Sama- and Atharva-vedas. (Click here for the full article)

Response to Teaching the Public
by Gaurav Mittal
Posted June 27, 2007

All living entities have eternal relationship with Krishna. Krishna (paramatma) is present in everyone's heart and is our best friend, guru, maintainer and protector. All living entities are seeking Him who is so close to us. This manifest in various faiths, religions etc. It is our prime duty and goal to seek or redevelop relationship with paramatma. When we look inwards and seek Him, hear Him or talk with Him, He responds. Everyone has full opportunity to redevelop relationship with paramatma.

Our relationship with Krishna is personal and is independent of others. We cannot blame our failure to come closer to Him on others. So, the examples cited by Bhaktin Sara cannot blame temples. (Click here for the full article)

Kazakhstan: "Tolerance" in Bucharest, Krishna Temple Ordered Demolished in Almaty

This article was published by F18News on: 6 June 2007

As senior Kazakh officials arrive in Romania for an OSCE conference on combating discrimination, the local administration chief ordered members of the embattled Hare Krishna near Almaty to demolish their own temple and other buildings within ten days. "If we don't do it, the authorities will," Hare Krishna spokesperson Maksim Varfolomeyev told Forum 18 News Service. Another 14 Hare Krishna-owned homes are already under threat of demolition in the latest moves in the authorities' three-year campaign to destroy the commune. The government's religious affairs chief Yeraly Tugzhanov - on his way to the OSCE conference - refused to answer any of Forum 18's questions about the threatened destruction of the temple. He likewise refused to discuss the heavy fines imposed in Atyrau on 4 June on six Jehovah's Witnesses for meeting for worship without state registration. (Click here for the full article)

Swim Safely in the Ganges
by Jada Bharata Dasa

I have quite a knowledge of strong currents and was trained in saving people swimming in strong currents. I received a Red Cross Life Saving certificate, which included a mock rescue of my 240-pounds swimming teacher and hundreds of hours of swimming lessons. My stepfather, an Atlantic City lifeguard, showed me many things about reading dangerous currents and how to swim in them.

As Atlantic City is dependent on tourists they go through great efforts to keep tourists from drowning. One thing that saves many lives in Atlantic City is that except for surfers it is illegal to swim in the ocean out of sight of a lifeguard. (Click here for the full article)

Our founder-acarya's goal for ISKCON was nothing short of changing the whole world, and his words and determination proved that. It's been thirty years since his departure and most devotees are eager to step it up. Here are some suggestions for the GBC:

  1. More GBCs
--Why do we have the same number of GBC's we had thirty years ago. We need three times more GBCs to open temples and make devotees worldwide.
  2. International Newsletter-monthly or weekly
--Gandhi said that a movement without a newsletter is dead.
  3. Electing and dismissing GBCs by temple presidents
--Prabhupada wanted this. There are some devotees who can be GBCs and some GBCs should be dismissed.

Open Letter Re: ISKCON Youth Forum Ashram

We are writing to inform you about an incident of a very serious nature that took place in ISKCON Vrindavan on 31st May at Prabhupada Vani Ashram (formerly Prthu Prabhu's ashram). The place is now called the "ISKCON Youth Forum Ashram" and is only a two to three minute walk from Krishna Balarama Mandir.

The ashram currently houses our new bhaktas and some other brahmacaris. In total about 50 devotees live on the property.

At about 4.15 pm, in broad daylight, on 31st May, about 40 to 50 armed men stormed into the ashram with obvious aggressive intent. They were led in and supervised by LAKSHMAN DAS (Malaysian national), a former pujari at Krishna Balarama Mandir, Vrindavan. (Click here for the full article)

Cleaning Vrindavan

I am very much touched by your article re conditions of Vrindavan. I noticed similar conditions a few years ago when I took a Canadian-German friend to Mathura. It was a shocking experience. It is amazing that there are many, many billionaires in India, but none, including the elected officials at different levels, seems anxious to listen to such conditions, not to speak of doing anything about it. I bet Krsna is crying to see the deterioration of the holy sites. By the way, where is Maneka Gandhi? She is the one I hope can change the tide.

Preventing Drownings

We just wrote a letter a few month ago to the management in Mayapur and to different devotees about the recent drowning reports. These drownings can be avoided if this is mentioned every day, and I mean every day, at announcements in ISKCON Mayapur.

I am mentioning this again, not to find any fault, but to prevent lives, valuable lives of devotees. Also, it should be mentioned that diving into the Ganges is very dangerous too. Please, please, please, please, please, please can this be done? And maybe some posters and fliers could be put up everywhere.

We are losing lives every year. This can be avoided. What needs to be done - a petition?

Responding to Article: "Spiritual Sky Incense"
by Suresh das
Posted June 2, 2007

Here's a little history of what happened to the Spiritual Sky Incense Company, which was originally started by devotees in the Los Angeles Temple, back in the early 1970's. The Spiritual Sky Incense Company was started as a means to support the devotees, and provide much needed money to support ISKCON's temples as well. It was a great company, owned and operated by devotees. Devotees ran all aspects of the company, from dipping of the incense sticks, to sales, to marketing, and even management. I was one of the original incense dippers. I personally dipped 500,000 sticks in one day.

Over the years Spiritual Sky Incense rose popularity and success, helping to support many temples across the U.S.A. and the world. At one point, the president of Spiritual Sky, Jayatirtha Prabhu, was featured on the cover of the "Wall Street Journal". (Click here for the full article)

This leap year, we observe Purushottama Adika Mas, or the auspicious leap month. In Vrndavana, it runs along the same benefits as Kartika Month, with benefits of one's austerities thousands of times more than usual. And the offences are also multiplied accordingly, depending on your intentions. One can do parikramas, refrain from shaving and cutting the nails, give regular charity, etc...

...30-50 goondas (hired ruffians) were over the wall at the Prabhupada Vani Ashram (previously Prthu's Ashram) all with lathis and other arms, shouting, screaming in their native language, and beating a couple of bhaktas. (Click here for the full article)

Transcribing Machine

At the kind invitation of Mahavishnu Maharaj, I travelled to Africa in November of last year to join the east African travelling festival. I spent nine years of my childhood there - having left in 1979.

Festivals were held at schools, hindu temples and park grounds. I would set up a table selling Prabhupada's books in English. In Tanzania, unfortunately few people speak english. We would show an introductory movie on Krishna consciousness which would cause a crowd to gather in no time. Some of the videos had a Hindi soundtrack, but nothing in Swahili for the local people.

I contacted Nrsimhananda prabhu at ITV about having voice overs done in Kiswahili. It would cost between $600-700 to alter the soundtrack of the 52 minute production of Your Ever Well Wisher. (Click here for the full article)

Teaching the Public
by Bhaktin Sara
Posted June 6, 2007

I am a little confused about something. I don't understand why people sometimes get kicked out of temples or discouraged from doing service. All I can do is give my perspective, whether it is right or wrong I do not know. My perspective is coming from the profession of school teacher - maybe a bit idealistic - where we take courses on how to be compassionate and understanding educators, believing that everyone has the potential to learn.

Imagine you are a teacher of some little four year olds, and a new student comes from another country who does not know anything about the culture of America - the language, the dress, the customs - this child simply comes to learn. (Click here for the full article)
