by Bhaktarupa das

BHUBANESVARA, India -- It appears that there is a mistake in the VCal computer program, concerning the date of observance of Radhastami for some places this year. H.H. Bhanu Maharaja is recommending that some temples observe on 4 September, not on 3 September as calculated by the VCal computer program for these places. (Click here for the entire article)

Letter from Jivananda dasa in prison in Oregon

Dear Mother Shyama Priya:

I went to a memorial service the other day for two men I knew here at Oregon State Prison.

Larry Pierce I met at the infirmary. A few days after I came here. My heart became very irregular, so they put me in the infirmary. Larry had cancer. We had many talks about Lord Krsna. I was chanting on my hands and asked Larry if he would buy me a Catholic Rosary. (They have 54 beads, so two times around = one round japa) Larry got me a Rosary to chant on, while we waited to get japa mala beads in the prison store, which they now sell there. Common Sense in Sadhana
by Robert Newman
Posted July 2, 2003

In a recent article, Deepak Vohra argued against the idea that the "current link" in the parampara must by definition be physically present. The sole basis of his argument was that nowhere did Srila Prabhupada explicitly state that "current link" implies "physically present." The hidden premise in his argument is that if Srila Prabhupada did not explicitly clarify a particular point, we are at liberty to believe anything we wish concerning that point. Same-gender marriages -- An unstoppable tide
by Ananda das
Posted July 11, 2003

Same-gender marriage is a state-sanctioned or civil marriage between two male or two female partners. Some countries are beginning to change their laws to permit such marriages. No religion is forced to endorse such marriages or civil unions, as many religions oppose them on principle, some partially or wholly endorse them, some attempt to ignore the issue, while others are bitterly polarized and are likely to undergo actual schism. Predictably, however, same-gender marriage has become a political hot potato, with some religious and conservative groups claiming to foresee the end of civilisation as we know it. Hindu Encounter with Modernity:
Kedarnath Datta Bhaktivinoda, Vaisnava Theologian

By Shukavak N. Dasa - Foreword by Thomas J. Hopkins
ISBN 1-889756-30-X

This is an excellent book, and particularly relevant in light of many of today's discussions on literalism vs. contextualism. Thakur Bhaktivinoda's life straddled contemporary British society and ancestral Hindu culture. One was a modern, analytical world which demanded rational thought. The other was a traditional world of Hindu faith and piety, which seemingly allowed little room for critical analysis. Could he play a meaningful role in modern society and at the same time maintain integrity as a Hindu? This book systematically examines his reinterpretation and application of Hinduism in the context of rational thought. (Click here for the full article)

"Current": in the immediate present
by Rama Kesava das
Posted July 1, 2003

Follow in the steps of the mahajanas

This is a response to Deepak Vohra's article, "Where Does Srila Prabhupada Say that 'Current' Means Living". Firstly let me explain that I did not meant to infer that the guru is no longer living once he has entered nitya-lila. I used the word "living" in its current vernacular form, meaning whilst someone is still in physical manifest presence here in this material world. To answer Deepak's question, I am not the type of person who can extract Prabhupada quotes right, left and centre. However, the word "current"--from "current link"--is defined as "belonging to the immediate present" (Funk and Wagnall's). Regarding diksa, what is the precedent to interpret this word otherwise? Sri Svarupa Damodara Goswami

Today is the disappearance day of Sri Svarupa Damodara. Sri Svarupa Damodara is an eternal associate and friend of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. This is confirmed in Vrndavana dasa Thakura's Caitanya-bhagavata. In gaura-lila, with Mahaprabhu in the bhava of Radharani, Svarupa Damodara is his alter-ego. In Vraja-lila, he was also Radharani's alter-ego, Lalita Sakhi. Kavi Karnapura also identifies Svarupa Damodara with Radha's other companion, Visakha Devi, in his Gaura-ganoddesa-dipika. Hare Krishna

My personal opinion, well we all carry one type of conditioning or another, but is there really any need to go forming a separate association or group, it tends to make that group stand out more than ever, and is a bit "in your face" sort of action. I know there are devotees who don't feel comfortable around homosexual or lesbian people, and those who are gay should accept that, as much as those of us who are not that way inclined try to accept those that are. Common Sense or Whim?

Sri Guru Purnima:
Remembering Sanatana Goswami

by Rama Kesava das
Posted July 13, 2003

Today is Guru Purnima; on this day of the full moon we also observe the disappearance day of Sri Sanatana Goswami.

Sanatana Goswami made his advent in 1488 C.E. (Sakabda 1410), five years before Rupa Goswami. He was born into a Sarasvata brahmana family in Bengal. His father Kumara Deva had many sons, of which three, Sri Amar (later Sanatana), Sri Santosa (Rupa), and Sri Vallabha (Anupama), are remembered as great devotees. (Click here for the full article)

Dramas and feasting enlivens New York Ratha Yatra
by the devotees of New York ISKCON
Posted July 11, 2003

Many thanks to the thousands and thousands of devotees who visited the city of New York to take part in the 2003 Ratha Yatra & Sankirtan Festival!

For 9 glorious days, Sri Sri Radha Govinda's Temple resounded with the holy name as devotees from around the world took part in wonderful kirtans, book distribution, festivals, and sumptuous prasadam. This year, devotees came from Argentina, Germany, Slovenia, India and throughout North America. 13 devotees came for the first time from Ghana, at the invitation of their spiritual master Bhakti-Tirtha Swami, enlivening the devotees with their African-style kirtan and dancing. Approximately 120 devotees came from the Alachua Krishna Community in Florida, along with many youth who traveled with Manu das prabhu on the New Krishna Youth bus. (Click here for the full article)

Samadhi Now 2003
Srila Prabhupada Samadhi Mandir, Vrndavana

by Parvati das
Posted July 11, 2003

This past November we marked 25 years in separation from Srila Prabhupada. So many of you were inspired to come forward this year to help build the Samadhi Maintenance Fund Fixed Deposit as well as the working account, and we were able to start quite a lot of projects. Without your support I could never offer Srila Prabhupada so much service here at his Samadhi. This is one of those literal examples of results in following His Divine Grace's order to cooperate in order to show how much we love him. Alone, we can do something, but together we can do something wonderful. I thank you all so much; Srila Prabhupada thanks you; the Vrndavana devotees thank you. It is certainly Krishna's mercy to have so much international participation and sadhu satsang. (Click here for the full article)

Follow acaryas but reject deviators
by Mahavegavati Dasi
Posted July 10, 2003

Dvibhuja prabhu says: "To follow the GBC is not blind following, but practical and common sense." However, when the GBC is not representing Srila Prabhupada, a devotee has to use "common sense" and intelligence to do the right thing.

For years, many devotees acted on GBC instructions (which they should not have acted on). Many devotees now are bitter, even blaming Prabhupada for things which had nothing to do with him, but rather, came about due to deviations of the GBC, these devotees not able to make the distinction. Regulative Principles: The Quest for Clarification
by Susheel Gopalan
Posted July 2, 2003

In recent months I have observed a barrage of commentaries justifying and countering conservative and liberal views on the regulative principles set by Srila Prabhupada as the founding principles for the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). I am hardly qualified to make further assertions on this subject. However, since the subject matter is one that impacts core ISKCON values, I can certainly reveal my impressions, impressions that I have conjured based on exposure and introspection.
