Sri Sri Krishna Balarama Ratha Yatra (August 2), and Sri Balarama Purnima (August 5) 2009, Queens, New York

Ever since Their August 2006 installation in Queens, NY, Sri Sri Krishna Balarama (Sri Sri Hari Haladhari) has showered unlimited blessings upon the devotees who have been serving them, as well as the thousands of guests who have had Their darshan. Attesting to this fact has been the precipitous growth of the weekly temple congregation and our guest database in the last three years. This small and fast growing Sri Sri Krishna Balarama Mandir , have been visited many senior travelling preachers among whom , have been Jayapataka, Satsvarupa, (Click here for the full article)

San Francisco Ratha Yatra
by Gadadhara das
Posted July 15, 2009

ISKCON of the Bay Area presents the 43rd annual "Festival of the Chariots" on Saturday July 25th at 11am in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.

This Ratha-Yatra, chariot procession, has been celebrated for five thousand years in India. Srila Prabhupada said in a lecture that this festival commemorates the glorious occasion of when Lord Krishna, along with His elder brother Balarama and His sister Subhadra, all together in a chariot came from the Capital City of Dvaraka to the pilgrimage place known as Kuruksetra. Both these places are still existing today. Upon receiving the news that Krishna was coming to Kurukestra, the Gopis of Vrindaban traveled there to see Him. (Click here for the full article)

Passing Away of Little Krishna Das
by Danakeli dasi
Posted July 12, 2009

On Monday, June 29, 2009 the Chicago Hare Krishna community experienced the loss of one of its young members. Krishna das, son of Vaishnava Sevananda das and Kirtida Kanyaka devi dasi, passed away peacefully in his home while the Hare Krishna mantra was being chanted.

Born on December 25, 2004, Krishna das spent his 4 ½ years being almost as mischievous as his namesake. Yet he had a serious side when it came to Krishna consciousness. His favorite game was "Krishna Land," in which the winner is he who gets back to Godhead first, and Krishna das always won. He was fond of play-fighting and was quite adept at playing on his drum set and electric keyboard. His favorite music was that of the devotee band "108." (Click here for the full article)

The Passing of a Friend of Krishna
by Bhaktin Sara
Posted July 2, 2009

Although not so many people reading Chakra may know of this devotee, I wanted to honor her by writing about her after her recent passing on. Any prayers and good thoughts sent her way would be appreciated.

Her name was Sara, and she was my neighbor about five years ago. We met in our parking lot, and became friends right away. From that day forward we shared meals, laughs, and neighborly talks. When she found out I was practicing Krishna Consciousness, she laughingly told me her stories about taking books and then feeling obligated to give donations at the airport to some sankirtana devotees. When her health was good, she used to come to the Sunday Feast occasionally, and we'd share spiritual talks at home. (Click here for the full article)

Michael Jackson Received Vaishnava Books
by Ramabhadra das
Posted July 14, 2009

Satya dasi with Michael Jackson in 1999.

In 1999 Satya devi dasi, of Sri Sri Radha Govinda Mandir in Brooklyn, New York, twice catered prasadam for the late Michael Jackson at private dinners for two with a man we know in New York City.

When she offered the singer a copy of the Bhagavad-gita he said he already had the book. The host then asked if the book Jackson had was Srila Prabhupada's Bhagavad-gita As It Is; Jackson confirmed that it was. When presented with a first-edition Krishna Art book, he looked through the illustrations and said he liked the paintings. He took that Krishna Art book home. (Click here for the full article)

Looking for Devotee Mentors
by Bhaktin Fiona
Posted July 12, 2009

Looking for devotee mentors, preferably of the first generation. I'm a 26-year-old single mother of one, who's been avidly studying Vaishnavism for the past ten years (though longer if you count my childhood years of attraction to the movement). I have Asperger Syndrome (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asperger_syndrome), and am very introverted, so meeting devotees by any medium (in person, by phone, email, etc...) has always been some what of a difficulty for me.

I would like to make contacts with sincere Vaishnavas, of any age (because age is just a measurement of time, and not a measurement of sincerity or maturity) whom I could look up to as mentors, or as guides, as I am often easily misled and find myself confused with the norms of social etiquette, in spiritual and material society. As Steaks Mount, Hare Krishnas Beef Up Appeals to Save Cows

by Sudeep Reddy for The Wall Street Journal, submitted by Krsnaa Fitch
Posted July 4, 2009

The dairy cows at New Vrindaban eat grain while they're milked twice a day.

NEW VRINDABAN, West Virginia, USA -- Saving cows, the Hare Krishnas in this village have learned, is a lot easier in India.

Created four decades ago, New Vrindaban was the first cattle sanctuary in the U.S. At its peak, it had 434 bovine refugees. Today, the cattle population is down to 80 because there's not enough money to support more. So the Hare Krishna community is borrowing a tactic more commonly used by charities that try to save people.

For $51, you can feed a cow for a month, while $108 would "provide special care for retired cows who can no longer breed or give milk," the group says in one appeal. "In one selfless stroke, you are sending a valuable message to our children and to a troubled world which sees today's gentle cow as tomorrow's dinner." (Click here for the full article)

  The Prabhupada Connection
by Antony Brennan (Reprinted from Krishna.com and ISKCON News Weekly)
Posted July 30, 2009

Internet access has provided ISKCON members with the opportunity to create web sites which reach out to the world in a variety of ways. These web sites become transcendental when they continue Srila Prabhupada's mission.

In the 1980's Padmapani Dasa published the The Vaisnava Journal which he posted to devotees in many countries. "I've always wanted to help spread Srila Prabhupada's glories around the world," Padmapani says.

"When I saw the potential of the World Wide Web, I immediately wanted to find a way to serve Srila Prabhupada and the devotees through this exciting technology, which is like the brhat-mrdanga of the modern age, Padmapani says.

Inspired by the possibilities, Padmapani Dasa logged on to the Internet and began work on The Prabhupada Connection. (www.prabhupadaconnect.com) (Click here for the full article)

Hare Krishnas Enter London's Gay Pride Parade
by BV Vaisnava Maharaja
Posted July 17, 2009

Once an astrologer told of Srila Prabhupada that "He has built a house in which the whole world could live." The mood of welcoming all persons, even of canvassing for people who would take up Krishna consciousness, without sectarianism, is the mood of Lord Nityananda and all our true acaryas who follow in His service.

Sadly this inviting, welcoming mood is not always found amongst all devotees and thereby many would-be devotees are neglected, rejected or banned due to bodily identification, which is common to us all to one degree or another. (Click here for the full article)

The Glorious Passing of Gandiva Devi Dasi
by Parvati devi dasi
Posted July 10, 2009

The other day, my godsister, my old friend, Gandiva prabhu, left her body in Canada in a wonderful way. It was Shayana Ekadasi right after mangal aroti. I am writing this, because her passing should not go unnoticed.

I was not personally there, but I was able to telephone from Vrndavana a few times to communicate with her. A few of us internationally, her old friends, did this to encourage her in her final hours. Many from the Winnipeg community came to make sure she and her family had everything they needed, and to perform kirtan. Her children, stalwart devotees, stayed with her at the hospital for weeks making sure she had Prabhupada's tape going 24 hours and was surrounded by pictures of Prabhupada and her favorite Deities. She remained without food and water and without intravenous for nine days, unable to speak, but able to hear and see for most of that time. (Click here for the full article)
