The Bhajan Kuti Case - Disturbed Krishna Bhaktas Start Sankirtan Yatra

by Translated from Dainik Jagran (Hindi daily - Mathura edition), Submitted by Basu Ghosh das, Baroda

Krishna devotees, disturbed that the Bhajan Kuti of Srila Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada Maharaj at the Radha Damodar Mandir, situated in Seva Kunj, has been sealed, on Monday began a program of harinam nagar sankirtan. Devotees from ISKCON said that until the locks of the sealed bhajan kuti were opened for the faithful, they would continue with their sankirtan yatra.

It must be noted that the dispute over the old bhajan kuti of Srila Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada, where worship was being conducted by the management of the ISKCON Krishna Balaram Mandir, (Click here for the full article)

Prabhupada's Siddhanta Tournament
by Atmavan das
Posted July 27, 2006

As a disciple of Srila Prabhupada dedicating my life to Prabhupada's mission, I have thought of one thing we could all do as a gesture of loyalty to our jagad-guru. Why not organize a grand debate to give new inspiration to the movement that we all participate in as our life's mission?

The purpose of this letter is to begin a discussion about the uncertain predicament for devotees facing apparently contradictory and ambiguous instructions from Srila Prabhupada. Among the multifarious and vast expanse of Prabhupada's instructions, which are the most essential? (Click here for the full article)

On Sufficient Guidance

"On sufficient guidance" is a lengthy, well-argued treatise by Kailasa Chandra das that covers a range of topics of great interest to devotees. Kailasa Chandra prabhu, a pioneer debunker of both the now-repudiated "Zonal Acharya" concoction of 1978 and the discredited so-called rittvik movement of the mid-1980s, has written a thoroughgoing essay in which he promises to detail "the qualifications of the bona fide madhyama devotee, the rittvik concoction, and a discussion of the causes underlying the acceptance of an unqualified 'spiritual master'." His magnum opus largely succeeds. (Click here for the full article)

My Condolence To Ananda's Family

"It is the duty of the guardians of children to revive the divine consciousness dormant in them."-Bg. 7.15. Purport.

My condolence to Ananda's family. It was very painful news, I knew them from LA, they used to be a cheerful and simple family dedicated to serving Srila Prabhupada, like most of the families of the time. This should never happen in any Vaisnava family, as matter of fact to any family.

People like Bhavananda and Dhanurdhara are not swamis what to speak gurus. Where is a definition that would portray them as gurus? If some time they believed in Krishna consciousness it seems they lost that long time ago. How could Dhanurdhara possibly heal the gurukula victims? (Click here for the full article)

In a recent article, Udayananda prabhu attempts to establish that Swami B.V. Tripurari is displeasing his Guru, A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, and that his deviations from the guru-parampara make him not only unfit to be a spiritual master but dangerous to the society of devotees. This article will show how the various quotes Udayananda prabhu uses to establish his points are misapplied and how his allegations are false. It will establish that Swami B. V. Deadbeats In ISKCON

The topic of child abuse goes straight to the heart. It involves the most vulnerable members of society and, as such, deserves all the public exposure it can get -- if not as a deterrent, then at least to raise awareness. By now most devotees are aware of the sexual, physical and emotional abuse that has taken place in ISKCON, but I'd like to draw attention to a much-neglected and underestimated extension of this problem. Although it is not categorized on the same level as sexual or physical abuse, I think neglect and abandonment of a child falls under the umbrella of abuse, too. (Click here for the full article)

Over the years I have been made privy to information which is less than pleasant and may be disturbing to the minds of loving followers, disciples and grand-disciples, of His Divine Grace A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Jagat Guru Srila Prabhupada. I am specifically speaking about one of our Godbrother who left Srila Prabhupada's movement many years ago to start his own movement. I am referring to Tripurari Swami who recently performed an initiation ceremony in North Carolina, which took people, being cultivated by Iskcon devotees to his own society known as the Gaudiya Vaisnava Society.

I have known Tripurari Maharaja for many years, and was pleased to have distributed Srila Prabhupada's books with him on occasion at the Chicago O'Hare airport back in 1974. (Click here for the full article)

With respect to Shakuntala devi dasi's proposal to implement the Direction of Management in ISKCON is perfectly reasonable and sensible case. Srila Prabhupada himself refered to it on occasions.

The two positive points in this are:

  1. Temple president can not be removed whimsically by the GBC. It necceitates for the Temple members to decide that.
  2. The commissioners(GBC) will serve for a period of 3 years, and they may be re-elected at the end of this period.

Srila Prabhupada left a thorough management structure of governance in ISKCON. Not only that he himself applied it as the following letters show: (Click here for the full article)

Just a few words in regard to Sahadeva Sakha dasa (Steve Podlewski) who recently (June 15) left his body.

I was fortunate to have met Steve almost two years ago. We grew quite close. I saw him throughout his radiation and chemo treatments. I drove him to the hospital back in January and was there with him when he was told that he had cancer. We walked out of the hospital, both stunned and holding hands, both lost in our own thoughts about what was going to happen next. Even though he had just been dealt a blow, his face lit up as we were leaving the hospital as we walked behind someone holding a baby. Steve loved little babies! To me that said so much. Jaya Advaita Swami has been posting on his website a series titled, "Can One Who Has Sinned Be a Saint?" In this series he highlights verses and purports that focus on how people who perform sinful acts can redeem themselves by chanting the Holy Names. The premise is that sincere prayer to the Lord will burn up all negative reactions. These quotes accurately convey what to do if one becomes polluted by sinful activities and wants to become freed from them.

There is ample philosophical support that if in the course of doing their duties Vaishnavas transgress material laws the mercy of the Lord may mitigate their reactions. (Click here for the full article)

When Srila Prabhupada established the ISKCON Life Membership program, he made it clear that there is a place within ISKCON for devotees unprepared to lead a life of full-time religious service. Srila Prabhupada was very loving and kind. He wanted everyone--saints and sinners alike--to receive the Lord's mercy in the form of books, prasadam, the holy name and devotional service:

"...if you want to be a family man--if you cannot dedicate twenty-four hours daily--then earn money and use it to spread Krishna consciousness... if you cannot earn money, then use your intelligence. There is so much intellectual work to do--publication, research, and so on. If you cannot do that, then utilize your words to tell people about Krishna...So where is the scarcity of opportunities? You can serve Krishna in any capacity, provided you want to serve." (Chicago, July 1975) (Click here for the full article)

Posted July 5, 2006

In William Shakespeare's tragedy "Hamlet," in order to avenge the death of his father, Hamlet decides to stage a play before the new king, his father's brother, by which Hamlet shows how his father was poisoned by his envious brother thus setting up a prelude to the play's final bloody climax.

Stage plays can be very powerful tools and an ideal way to present the points of view of the writer enabling the masses to imbibe messages in an emotional and kinetic manner be they didactic, political, propagandistic or religious.

Over the years within ISKCON there have been many wonderful attempts at performing plays from the Vedic literatures and they have been very well received. (Click here for the full article)

Positive Articles
by Ekabuddhi das
Posted July 3, 2006

I am writing to implore everyone to read the posting from Jayadvaita Swami "Scapegoat" It is the best posting to date I have read by a leader in Iskcon. I had been intending to write an article agreeing with Dhanadhuras statement that he felt himself a victim of the gbc. I am sure he was....this does not however excuse his separate behavior towards students......and I also implore every single devotee in the world, leaders and simple disciples to read with an open mind the thoughts expressed by the students of the gurukulas.

For the sake of our individual souls and for the sake of our group consciousness and karma, full, complete, compassionate attention must finally be given to this blight on our institution. (Click here for the full article)

Nama Yajna
by Ananda Vrindavana, Principal, Bhaktivedanta Gurukula & International School
Posted July 26, 2006

The High School students of Bhaktivedanta Gurukula and International School in Vrindavan, along with some visiting alumin, held a nama yajna in memory of Anand McClure on Saturday night, July 22nd.

The students gathered on the central lawn of the Gurukula, where Anand attended in the 1980's. After a small talk by Gurukula Director Ananda Vrindavaneswari devi dasi, Brajaraja das opened the yajna with the bhajan, Saparshada-bhagavad-viraha-janita-vilapa. Brajaraj, a former student who is now one of the High School asram teachers, is well known for his melodious and devotional singing. This beautiful prayer led us into the Maha Mantra with students surrounding the lead singer Caitanya, Grade 12. (Click here for the full article)

The Circle of Care
by Satyavati devi dasi Bornholz, RN, Triple Springs, North Carolina
Posted July 25, 2006

Given the importance of focusing one's mind on Krsna during the last moments of life, it's no surprise that the hospice movement carries great importance in Vaisnava society. However, before we leave our bodies, we have a lot of living to do in them, and as those bodies get older, they require more care.

There does not seem to be much of an interest in long-term, convalescent, skilled nursing or custodial care in our society. Perhaps because it is just now that we're seeing the reality of aging and disease, or perhaps because just no one's thought of it; but a great and urgent need is going to exist very shortly, if not immediately, for this kind of facility for devotees. Spiritual Journeys In India
by Jay Govinda Dasa
Posted July 24, 2006

I'm a devotee living in Vrindaban. Recently I opened a Website about making spiritual journeys in India. It's meant for devotees or spiritual minded people, who want to visit sacred temples, tirthas, Dhamas and other wonderful places of our beloved India in peace, with good company of other likeminded people. There's volunteer yoga sessions included and more.

I worked for a European travel agency for about six years, as a tour leader and travel guide for making ordinary mundane journeys in India, but I got so disheartened with it and therefore decided to begin something closer to my heart and soul. (Click here for the full article)

Srila Prabhupada's Love

Many of you never met Srila Prabhupada and those of us who where his students didn't have much exchange with him except for public classes or morning walks. Prabhupada never told me directly that he loved me but I know he did. Sirla Prabhupada had 5000 diciples/children so it difficult to express yourself with each one as closely as he would of like to. This morning I was reading Srila Prabhupada's early letters to his disciples and I came accross one I wanted to share with you. (Click here for the full article)

The Vedic Theatre Company seeks funding to develop it's current roster of plays of which two have never been seen in ISKCON before. One of the plays, originally performed in 1987, is being revived with a new vision. Ideally, we are seeking interested producers and sponsors and they may visit the following site for more info:

This will take you to the links that will preview the plays. At the same time we are developing a very ambitious play about the life of Lord Caitanya entitled, "Moon of Navadvipa" for the Summer of 2007.

The Protection of Innocents - a Response To Ameyatma
by Niscala dasi
Posted July 17, 2006

There has recently been some internet preaching initiated by Ameyatma Dasa, in support of the arranged marriage of girls at a very young age. The argument he gives is that it is what Manu Samhita as well as Srila Prabhupada have recommended. This needs to be addressed, as there are certain important considerations to be taken into account in this regard.

The purpose of the recommendation given in Manu Samhita to marry girls at a very young age is to guarantee their protection in a physical, emotional and spiritual sense. Few sections of even our current western society would think this a bad thing. (Click here for the full article)

Hello, I am writing in response to the numerous articles posted on this website about my brother's death. I think it is very interesting how instead of reading of memories of a brother I sadly barely knew, I am reading everyone else's story. I saw one headline about how "we let him down", and guess what? You are right, you did. Most of his friends knew that my brother Ron and I existed, but even after his death no effort was made to contact us, and while he was alive, no effort was made to help him. My brother had a lot of issues, and he would flit in and out of my life, cause problems and leave. As much as this hurt, I would try to find him and no one would know where he was. Even though I tried every few years, all of his old "gurukula friends" had no idea how to locate him, but would be quick to tell me what a loser my brother was. (Click here for the full article)

Re: 'Questioning the Guru System'
by Raghunatha Puri das
Posted July 13, 2006

Other than showing that frustrations with the current system can lead to impersonalism, what is the value of publishing in a devotee forum an article whose main point is that no guru should be worshipped?

Not only is "former Bhakta Mike's" tone completely cynical, but practically all the views expressed are completely at variance with Srila Prabhupada's teachings.

I appreciate the importance of thoughtful, insightful articles (Click here for the full article)

Open Letter To Dhanurdhara Disciple
by Marcus Laurence
Posted July 12, 2006

Dear Caitanya Bhagavat;

I was very taken aback by your recent posting in defense of your gurudeva. Although you make some very good points in relation to how the greater-society should view the case/situation, I could`nt help but feel that the entire thing was self-motivated.

For example, in the beginning you state, "How could message boards change my life so drastically?" Perhaps you felt it was a ploy to deny you something you feel you are entitled to?

Next you say that the case is closed as far as "Maharaja" is concerned. Do you feel that true remorse and humility is something that you can turn on and off like a tap? (Click here for the full article)

In Defense of Tripurari Swami
by Madan Gopal das
Posted July 9, 2006

I would like to respond to the charges that Udayananda das has levelled against Tripurari Swami in his recent article. First, I would like to thank him for the opportunity to do some research in our rich Gaudiya tradition and for the invaluable exercise of intelligence in discriminating good philosophy from sentiment. I recommend it to one and all. Additionally, I am grateful for the opportunity to defend a Vaishnava against unwarranted criticism.

The alleged 1995 Krsna Balarama Swami tape that Udayananda prabhu extensively quotes from is not in Swami B.V. Tripurari's tape ministry, so I was not able to verify the accuracy, the context or even the existence of such a tape. (Click here for the full article)

The Chakra Survival Guide
by Niscala dasi

Chaitanya Bhagavat writes that in relation to his guru Dhanurdhara Swami, nothing has changed since 2000, with one exception:

"the only thing that has happened since then is that certain people who are clearly unfamiliar with the actual case file have begun to post on message boards, demanding Dhanurdhara Swami leave ISKCON."

How could he have so totally overlooked the fact that since that time, one of Dhanurdhara's victims has just put a gun to his head???

How could this not result in "charged emotion" except in those who are bereft of any humanity? (Click here for the full article)

Oil Painting Wholesale
by Prema Manjari d.d.
Posted July 3, 2006

I have recently established myself in the oil painting wholesale business and would like to offer oil paintings at a very good price to the devotees who are dealing in this field. Many overseas devotees take so much trouble to come to HK to buy oil paintings. I am good at bargaining and Chinese is my mother tongue. Therefore I can get cheaper prices for the paintings and resell them to devotees at a competitive price. That will save them a great deal of energy in negotiating with wholesalers and instead allow them to focus on their sale. Please kindly contact me at premamanjaridd@yahoo.com.hk

Srila Prabhupada To the Rescue
by Shyamasundara dasa
Posted July 2, 2006

In her recent Chakra Posting "'Never Leave ISKCON', They Say" Bhaktin Sara says, "There must be some practical way we can have a voice in taking down from leadership an unqualified leader."

I am pleased to be able to inform Bhaktin Sara that such a mechanism was put firmly in place by Srila Prabhupada on July 28th 1970, but it was shelved by the GBC. It is called the Direction of Management and it is a voting system. Democracy is only "demon-crazy" when the voters are unqualified. But if the voters are practicing devotees, then Srila Prabhupada endorsed democracy.

Srila Prabhupada's original signed Direction of Management document can be viewed on the internet by clicking here. (Click here for the full article)
