The "G" Word
by Vyenkata Bhatta das
Posted July 31, 2005

Lisa Compton's response to my article makes the important point that the way we address others - the titles, categories, and designations that we use - may sometimes have a belittling effect on them. As a member of ISKCON's Communications department, I try to be especially cognizant of this, and I thank Ms. Compton for her thoughtful reminder. I hope, therefore, that she will not be offended by my offering some clarification as to why the term "gurukuli" was used in the piece. (Click here for the full article)

Chapter 8: Let There Be Calamities
submitted by Narasimha
Posted July 26, 2005

This material world is certified by the Lord in the Bhagavad-gita as a dangerous place full of calamities. Less intelligent persons prepare plans to adjust to those calamities, without knowing that the nature of this place is to be full of calamities. They have no information of the abode of the Lord, which is full of bliss and without trace of calamity. The duty of the sane person, therefore, is to be undisturbed by worldly calamities, which are sure to happen in all circumstances. Suffering all sorts of unavoidable misfortunes, one should make progress in spiritual realization, because that is the mission of human life. The spirit soul is transcendental to all material calamities; therefore, the so-called calamities are called false. A man may see a tiger swallowing him in a dream, and he may cry for this calamity. Actually there is no tiger and there is no suffering; it is simply a case of dreams. In the same way, all calamities of life are said to be dreams. If someone is lucky enough to get in contact with the Lord by devotional service, it is all gain. Contact with the Lord by any one of the nine devotional services is always a forward step on the path going back to Godhead. (Click here for the full article)

Rahu and the vision of Sukadeva

From Apologies to Action:
In New York, GBC and Gurukulis dialogue on mistakes of a painful past and hopes for an uncertain future

by Vyenkata Bhatta das
Posted July 7, 2005

According to Confucius, the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. On Sunday June 12th, the day after New York Ratha Yatra, ten senior ISKCON leaders and more than thirty gurukula alumni - popularly known as gurukulis - met at the Brooklyn Hare Krishna temple to attempt that first step together. The meeting, organized by ISKCON Communications, was designed to be a forum for leaders to express their remorse for the abuse suffered by hundreds of young adults who once attended the society's gurukula schools, and for the gurukulis to voice their concerns. The Letter He Asked Me To Write
by Satsvarupa dasa Goswami
Posted July 5, 2005

About a month before His Holiness Bhakti Tirtha Swami left this world, I asked him if there was something I could do for him when he passed away. He immediately said yes. I could write a letter on his behalf and spread it widely. I was glad that he had such a positive request in mind but unfortunately he never gave me many points about what to say in this letter. I spoke to him a number of times afterward, as it was my custom to speak to him weekly. But often times he could not focus on points for the letter and toward the end of his stay it was very difficult for him to use the telephone. But I do have a few items that he did ask me to write in the letter. When he couldn't give me more than that, we mutually agreed that I would have to write the rest of the letter from my heart. Posted July 30, 2005

I refer to the article posted by Bhakta Jim (16 July). I do agree that one must be consistent when asking others to apply a principle. Practice what we preach. What confuses me is the lack of cultural development and support of devotee artists. While there is precious little we can do about the past except learn from it, there is lots we can do about the future. We should be developing a network, where the vast talent of the regular body of devotees now goes under-utilized, as an international society we should have no need to 'steal'. There seems to be neglect of promotion of the talented, in favour of the high profile devotees' productions (which unfortunately often lack talent). What chance does Bhakta Joe Soap stand of competing in this relatively small market, with Maha-Popular-and-Saintly-but-Talentless-Guru-So-and-So?

Response to Lisa Compton's Article
by Manjari Meberg
Posted July 29, 2005

This is in response to Lisa Compton's article about change the term "Gurukuli" when referring to ex-students of the gurukula. I don't know how my other brothers and sisters feel, but, I rather like the term. It is endearing to me. I have never heard any one ever get offended or feel that this is a belittling term. I think we have taken the word and it has kinda morphed in to a word to describe who we are. I don't think it has to do with age. If it was ever put to a vote I would vote to keep the word "Gurukuli". I think most of my other friends would agree with me.

Open Letter to the ISKCON Child Protection Office
by Pandu das
Posted July 25, 2005

As you know, Vakresvara Pandit das, who is both famous and infamous as a kirtan leader and in other roles in ISKCON, was found by an ISKCON Child Protection Office ("CPO") Committee to have been guilty of numerous sexual molestations of a female child over a period of about one year in or around 1993. The finding of guilt was stated in a CPO Official Decision dated July 26, 2002, and was affirmed by a CPO Appeal Panel ("AP") decision dated June 8, 2005. In the state with jurisdiction over these crimes, the sexual molestation of a child constitutes "aggravated sexual assault," and "indecency with a minor," each of which are felonies in the first and second degree, respectively. The criminals who are found by the State to be guilty of these crimes routinely die in prison. The findings of the CPO reveal Vakresvara Pandit das ("VPd") as a sexual "predator," as described by one criminal defense attorney and ISKCON member who was requested by your predecessor to review the CPO findings. Change of Name Added
by Lisa Compton
Posted July 18, 2005

The article by Vyenkata Bhatta das was an interesting read. May I add that it may also be an important step forward to stop calling 30-year adults 'gurukulis'. 'Gurukuli' applies to children enrolled in gurukula. To still use this name is belittling. One may as well start calling the first Prabhupada disciples 'ex-hippies'. I can hear it already in the morning announcements: "Dear devotees, this morning's Bhagavatam class will be given by ex-hippy Satsvarupa maharaja". Do you see what I mean? When we see people in a full and respectful way, we recognise their progress in life. You adress them as they are. Not as they were as children.

With kind regards.

The Reason for Continued Concern
by Niscala dasi

Malati mentioned she doesn't know what prompted me to write "Subject of Justified Concern". My concern was her attempt to suppress rumors which are only the natural result or symptom of an atmosphere of fear and suspicion. Symptoms or results do not disappear by suppression- at least, not permanently- this is like weeding one's garden by simply squashing the offending vegetation. One must cut it out at the root, the underlying cause, and then all above ground growth will disappear... (Click here for the full article)

Order Fulfilled by Balance
by Niscala d.d.
Posted July 10, 2005

We often hear that it is our duty to follow the instructions or orders of the spiritual master, and that by doing so, one pleases Krsna. The problem is that while the message is one- the awakening of love for Krsna through service- the instructions on how to do that are many and sometimes contradictory. Hence the devotees are divided in their application of those orders. Some prefer to follow one particular set of instructions and hail them as the most important, and others disagree and advance their own adopted instructions as the most important. Then it becomes a battle of the egos, with neither side willing to admit defeat. Finally the dear Big Brother GBC steps in and gives us the "Final Conclusion" via their "Sastric Advisory Committee", and all fights are over and ISKCON becomes a paradise of peace and tranquility. (SIGH) Isn't it just wonderful to have other people think for us? (Click here for the full article)

In the 1990's he drove many devotees from all over the world to Vrdnavana, including the late Sridhar Maharaja and Thakur Haridas of Krsna Culture. He also drove the life memberhips collectors to their sponsors during the building of the New Delhi temple. Sushil was always enthusiastic, kind and extra helpful in his service. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter as well as his parents and two brothers and their families. Please pray to Lord Krsna for his soul.
