Devotee Fundraises for Book Distribution
by Sudevi Samanich
Posted January 28, 2011

Hello, and thanks for checking out my birthday wish. For my birthday on January 24, I'm asking my friends and family for a special gift: help me raise $1000 for sponsoring spiritual books. It's a great cause: to distribute spiritual literature to those who are in need of them through various outlets such as prisons, hospitals, doctor's offices, etc., and to those with low income. Donation proceeds go to Bhakti Projects Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, and are tax-deductible within the United States.

I chose to sponsor spiritual books because I want to please my gurudeva, Nitya-lila-pravishta Srila Ashtottara-sata B.V. Narayan Maharaj. (Click here for the full article)

Muraru Sevaka Leadership Change
by Tamohara das (GBC Zonal Secretary)
Posted January 27, 2011

I would like the devotees to know of some recent changes at Murari Sevaka dhama. We are very happy to announce that Gadi Prabhu has agreed to become the Temple President for Murari Sevaka. He has been spending the majority of his time the last few months at Murari, and has made a firm commitment to dedicate the large majority of his time to the project. He will be primarily living on the farm, and as his other obligations wind down, will be permanently located at Murari Sevaka.

We feel very fortunate to have a senior devotee of Gadi’s character and advancement to help guide this project. Gadi Prabhu is a disciple of Srila Prabhupada who has served in the Southeast USA for many years. (Click here for the full article)

Facebook Warning
by Name Withheld
Posted January 22, 2011

Please check someone's wall before accepting their friend request on facebook even if you think you know the person in the picture.

There is someone on facebook right now who is impersonating quite a few devotees, using their photos, making fake profiles, but writing absolutely horrible, offensive, sexual, blasphemous things on their pages. This person is writing awful things about specific devotees, as well as bad mouthing ISKCON, GBC, and gurus in general. This person knows the names of many devotees in Los Angeles and other cities and is writing harmful words about them. They are trying to search for devotees on facebook to become friends with so please look before you accept any new requests.

I don't want to give the names of all the fake profiles here to protect those I know who are being impersonated, but there are at least five fake profiles that I know of and possibly more. (Click here for the full article)

ISKCON Opens Yadagiri Centre
by Sahadeva das
Posted January 19, 2011

On 22 December 2010, devotees inaugurated a Namahatta ISKCON centre at Yadagiri Gutta, a holy place 60 km east of Hyderabad in South India. This place is known for its hilltop temple of Lord Nrsimhadeva.

Touted as a second Tirupati of Andhra Pradesh, it is the holiest place in the Telangana region and assumes all the more importance due to ongoing agitation for a separate Telangana state. This area has 200 practicing ISKCON devotees, and over a hundred of them are chanting 16 rounds. In November 2010, 18 devotees from the area received their first initiation, and many more are in the queue.

The devotees would like to build here a replica of the Govindaji temple of Vrindavan, which was erected under the direction of Rupa and Sanatana Goswamis in 1590. The towers and parapet of Govindaji were demolished in 1670 by the tyrant Aurangzeb, who also razed the garbha griha to the ground; the temple was partially reconstructed in 1854. The devotees and members of the Phoenix, Arizona temple held a Harinam mantra group meditation on New Year's day. As the sun rose in the east through the large temple windows, heralding the beginning of the first day of the New Year, the devotees continuously chanted, Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. Most of the members attended the complete morning program. The chanting continued throughout the day. There were participants as young as 7 years old in the group. Looking for Sponsors for My Dance Graduation
by Komala Kumari
Posted January 15, 2011

My first performance, ISKCON Detroit

I began my dance journey at a very young age under the guidance and inspiration of my sister, Anapayini Jakupko. I give all the credit to my sister for making me the dancer I am today. She has been the most incredible role model and mentor in my life, and I continue to approach her today for advice and approval. I began classes under my sister at the age of 3, and gave my first performance at the local ISKCON temple at the age of 4.

I grew up watching her sister perform Bharatanatyam, and listening to my mother sing Classical Carnatic music. Because of my family’s strong attraction to the sacred arts of south India we began visiting Bangalore frequently, and at the age of 7 I had my first dance class with Smt. Indira Kadambi, My sister's dance teacher. (Click here for the full article)

Unity in the Vaishnava Family
by Niscala dasi
Posted January 9, 2011

Narayana Maharaja has passed away, and in the wake of this tragic event, there has been many an appeal to unite, and take shelter, as one family, in the mercy of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. This does not mean joining another group, or forming one around another Mahabhagavat, but recognizing what Krsna consciousness is- freedom from all designations- the breakdown of barriers between people on the basis of race, nationality, group or faith.

Those of us who are not followers of Narayana Maharaja or his teachings should have no lesser feelings of warmth and unity towards his disciples than disciples of our own gurus. Krsna consciousness is not an in-house thing, it is all-inclusive. We embrace Muslims, Christians, Buddhists- all are servants of the Lord according to their realization and place on the eternal, universal, evolutionary spiritual path. Just because I do not agree with the teachings of Buddha does not mean that I do not offer him all respect, (Click here for the full article)

Sitting at our computers we have unlimited choices where to go; click and go to World News; click to find out the latest score at a sporting event, or even watch it live; click to shop online; click to watch a movie; click to enter the world of Social Networking to find out what friends and family are up to, click to Chakra.com, etc.

Gradually our computer begins to reflect our desires and interests, just like our subtle body. Look into a person's computer history, where they visit, what they write, who they communicate with; and you'll find what their interests are.

Just as we can fall into maya or use everything in Lord Krsna's service (the iron-in-fire example), similarly we can use our computer to change the consciousness of ourselves and others. This is the principle upon which eCourses at Krishna.com are designed.

Our most recent offer is a one month Sri Isopanisad eCourse; (Click here for the full article)

Christian Leaders Learn ISKCON Views
by Bhakta Chris Evans

ISKCON Secunderabad temple regularly hosts classes for various religious communities who get a firsthand experience of Vedic philosophy and lifestyle. The faith groups visit the temple, hear the devotees, chant, dance, take prasadam and buy books. The temple's program director, Dr Sahadeva das, has been a popular figure on the interfaith scene for many years. In the last training program for Christians in November 2010, 50 senior Christian preachers of Andhra Pradesh came to the temple for three hours of classes on Vaishnava theology and universal religion. They chanted, danced, partook of prasadam and purchased dozens of books. The group leader, Father Sebastian, complimented ISKCON for giving them a true insight into Vedic culture and, on behalf of the group, congratulated Dr Sahadeva das for making them feel at home. He said that they felt as if they were in a seminary and that many misconceptions which they may have harbored about Vaishnavism were cleared up. (Click here for the full article)

Snowstorm Destroys Villa Vrindavana Cow Shelter

by Madhava Smullen for ISKCON News on 21 Jan 2011

Devotees in ISKCON Italy’s rural Villa Vrindavana community are still struggling to recover after a violent snowfall in the Florence area on Friday, December 17th paralyzed the farm and completely destroyed the tent-shelter in which its cows were housed.

The intense three-hour snowstorm brought the old circus tent, which has served as a stable for the past fifteen years, to the ground while the cows were still under it.

Despite the extreme conditions and overall dangerous situation, Aravindha Dasa, Ekadasi Dasa, and cattleman Bhakta Roberto worked with selfless courage and determination to rescue them.

The devotees had to use knives and other tools to cut the cows free from the tent’s plastic sheeting, while two animals were so badly trapped that it took three hours to free them. The rescue work, which went on from (Click here for the full article)

Heavy Use of Incense a Risk Factor for Cancer
submitted by Varshana Dasi
Posted January 10, 2011

Heavy use of incense doubles one's chance of getting cancer, especially in women. HH Hridayanada Maharaja asked that this article be dispersed to other forums so I am introducing it here.

This article does mention the quality of the incense as a factor, yet I infer that it may be primary, since the burning of pure oils such as frankincense and myrhh is an ancient practice. Many cheaper types of incense use synthetic oils that only smell "nice" in the package. These are most likely to become toxic when burned. (Click here for the full article)

Passing of Parasurama Dasa

It is with heartfelt sadness and separation that I announce the passing of my friend Parasurama Dasa. Parasurama Dasa served in Denver ISKCON in the mid 1980's and married Kathamrta Devi Dasi. I was always happy to see Parasurama and Kathamrta. They would come over and chat with my wife and I a lot as we were neighbors. I will remember the good things he did while serving Srila Prabhupada as that is how we should all see each other. I am sure that Srila Prabhupada and Lord Krsna will guide him in his future service to the Lord and wish him well on his eternal service. When he left his body he was seeking shelter from some severe weather. He left his body due to some type of organ failure and was ill for some time. The last couple of months have been particularly rewarding. Krishna Swarup prabhu, on loan from New Raman Reti, has been conducting classes in Srimad Bhagavatam and Bhagavad-gita. This last week, he gave a comprehensive seminar on the Teachings of Queen Kunti. (Click here for the full article)
