Well. Japathon started at Boise, Idaho, USA temple. Temple president HG Ananta Rupa (photo) came with a brilliant idea in 1998. True Non-Sexism Underlies Bhakti
by Sankarshan das Adhikari
Posted January 21, 2009

I am very happy to hear that Sylvia and Petter Milleding are practicing Krishna consciousness. This is indeed wonderful news. I am also happy to see that they are approaching the devotees to honestly bring forward their doubts in order to get clarification. It is through the process of inquiring from and serving Guru and Vaisnavas that our understanding of the science of bhakti become crystal clear. Depending on the mercy of Srila Prabhupada and Lord Sri Krishna I shall try my level best to answer to their full satisfaction.

In regards to the important question Sylvia raised ("A Call for Non-Sexist Purports"), kindly try to understand these points. If we assume that the teachings of Krishna consciousness are sexist, i.e. favoring one sex over another, we are making a wrong assumption. Lord Sri Krishna is an equal opportunity employer. Everyone has an equal opportunity to become a pure devotee and go back to home, back to Godhead. Krishna is not obliged to make a show of being a so-called non-sexist by allowing an equal number of men and women to excel spiritually and come back to Godhead. (Click here for the full article)

In my quest to further nourish my family and guests on Krishna Prasad, I would like to know if *your* temple or preaching center has a cookbook compiled by local devotees of tried and true recipes.

Even if it's totally informal and *gasp* unprofessional, it's the nectar between the pages that is the gold.

I interested in bying a copy of it and I'm sure there are many other devotees who would, too. We are all looking for that amazing recipe which will forever change the way we view ekadasi. (Click here for the full article)

The Year of the Ox

January 26, 2009 marks the beginning of the Chinese year 4707. According to the Chinese lunar calendar, this is the Year of the Ox. The Ox, one of 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac, symbolizes prosperity through hard work, resolve, and tenacity.

While economists hope this fortells a bullish financial market, we at Save the Cow see it as an opportunity to increase and improve our service to Lord Krishna's beloved cows and oxen. This auspicious opportunity is open to all and depends upon your generous contributions. (Click here for the full article)

Padayatra Restarts in Guyana
by Paramatma das
Posted January 27, 2009

The devotees of the ISKCON Guyana will restart Padayatra from Monday, January 26, 2009. Padayatra was first launched by His Holiness Agrani Swami in Guyana in 1989 from the easternmost Village of Crabwood Creek, near the Suriname border, with a five mile walk daily followed by massive evening sankirtan and other Krishna consciousness presentations. That segment covered 200 kilometres along the main coastline where most of the population is concentrated. There was then a break for several years.

In the mid nineties Padayatra again continued for another 50 kilometres on the West Coast of Demerara when World Padayatra Minister, His Holiness Lokanath Swami, graced the festival. (Click here for the full article)

Spiritual Vision is Beyond Discrimination
by Niscala dasi
Posted January 21, 2009

Sylvia Milleding wrote: "is Krishna really a man, and if Krishna is, why would He elevate men over women in a spiritual context?" Krishna is male and female both, as all forms and energies emanate from Him and are sustained by Him. It may be asked: why, then, do we say "He" and not "She"? Well, English does not have a word that means both "he" and "she" except "it", and that refers to inanimate objects, dead matter.

The Absolute Truth is one, but to enjoy pastimes, He expands into male and female forms, Radha-Krishna, for loving interactions.

Sylvia asked why God doesn't descend in female form, but He does. There is Mohini Murti, and there is Lord Chaitanya, who is Radha and Krishna again combined into one personhood. There are all the animal incarnations, whose genders are not specified. (Click here for the full article)

We would like to thank all of you for your phone calls, messages and prayers. It means a lot to Balabhadra. I will try to explain as simply as possibly what has been happening with Balabhadra's health.

Balabhadra has always had back problems for over 40 years (he is approaching his 63 birthday in April). He was always able to get over any flare ups and continue to physically work very hard. His whole life has been full of physical work and in his devotee years (initiated in 1969) mostly centered on farm life and the cows. This last year has been different. He has collapsed about four times and his recovery has been slow, like two weeks or more for each collapse. His visits to doctors, MRI, etc. revealed herniated disks, moderate spinal stenosis and some other deterioration but nothing that was considered an emergency surgery candidate. Miso Without a Blender
by Vrindavan dasa

For a year and a half, I made miso broth without a blender, and there was no problem. It was always good. Then I started to use a blender, and the problems began -- although I didn't know that the blender had anything to do with it. My thinking was that the temperature must be the problem.

Now I am discovering that not the temperature, but the blender, is the cause of the problem. A good comparison is "cold pressed apple cider". Why is it "cold pressed"? The reason that apple cider has to be "cold pressed", is that if it were spun through a machine like a juicer or blender, too much oxygen would enter into the juice, (Click here for the full article)

No Relaxation in the Revolution: Congregational Preaching in the Uk
by Dina Sharana dasa
Posted January 18, 2009

At first, it wasn't book distribution that spread Krishna consciousness in England. Instead, devotees met with George Harrison and the Beatles, went to parties, and rubbed shoulders with the poets, artists and singers of the day. But when Krishna was released, Prabhupada laid a new emphasis on book distribution, writing to English devotees, "I am always thinking of the boys in the vans."

Yet there was a larger preaching plan. When Tribhuvanath Dasa, who had been staging festivals up till then, asked, "Should I stop and just do book distribution?" Prabhupada replied, "No. Do everything side by side." (Click here for the full article)

30 Dec. 08 Report from Bhakti Caru Maharaja

Yesterday late morning, I came to Bombay, and went to see Jayapataka Maharaja in the afternoon. Bhakti Purushottama Maharaja, Braja Hari prabhu and Sunil Madhav from Chicago, came along with me. While driving to the hospital, I was feeling quite depressed. Just to think of the person who used to be so full of strength and vitality lying on bed in this condition is naturally painful.

I was remembering those early days in Mayapur - going to swim in the Ganges with him. With steady, powerful strokes he used to casually swim across that river. So many incidences flashed across my mind - once Radha Jivan lost his breath in the middle of the river and panicked and started to cry out for help, and Jayapataka Maharaja came to his rescue and carried him to the shore. Guru Kripa, (at that time a Swami), used to come to Mayapur with his tough group of devotees, called the Nama Hatta, from Japan. (Click here for the full article)
