The Nature of Raganuga
by Niscala dasi
Posted January 30, 2008

In "Progressive Bhakti - Part One," Srila prabhu wrote that in my previous article (When's the Time for Raganuga, Anyway?), Srila Prabhupada "tended to avoid discussion of 'higher topics,' and raganuga-bhakti in particular."

In that article I never suggested that Srila Prabhupada avoided topics of raganuga. To the contrary, I was suggesting that he did speak on such things, but we never realized they were raganuga topics. The example I gave of the spontaneous service of the King's servant in risking disobeying his rules to save him is actually the same topic as that of Radharani and the rasa dance. Sri Sri Nitai Mayapur-Chandra Lead the Harinam Party in Mayapur
by Ila devi dasi

"The sankirtana pastimes of the Lord are unique, never before, in any other incarnation, were such pastimes ever revealed. As the kirtana picked up gusto, the Lord's joy also increased. The devotees were carried in waves of sublime joy.

The Lord and husband of the Goddess of Fortune was dancing on the streets of Navadvipa and anyone who saw Him became free from all sorrows. Soon it was dusk, but the devotees were perfectly engrossed in the kirtana, oblivious of the material realm. (Click here for the full article)

Krsna the Padayatra Ox
by Kurma Rupa das

Our majestic padayatra ox Krsna was diagnosed with horn cancer a month ago. At 21-years of age he slowed down and stopped eating and then laid down for five days. Yesterday morning Mukunda Datta, Head Pujari of Sri Sri Krsna Balarama Mandir sent him the garland of Gauranga Mahaprabhu.

At 6:00 pm Sanak Sanatana who puchased Krsna when he was three years old and accompanied him on Padayatra for eight years offered him the garland of Sri Sri Krsna Balarama and Sri Sri Gaura Nitai.

Then at 6:40 pm he rose his head high, opened his mouth, exited his body and gently lowered his head. (Click here for the full article)

Eco Friendly Dinnerware
by Lilasuka dasi
Posted January 15, 2008

Two years ago a devotee got the idea to create a way for ISKCON to be able to serve prasada with dinnerware that respect Mother Bhumi, is safer to eat from and is in line with our philosophy. The plates, cups and bowls are made from sugar cane fiber and utensils are made from vegetable starch. They are completely compostable and have proven to attract a lot more souls to Krsna consciousness, while saving the landfills and water systems from the waste of toxic one time use products that do not break down. In addition to the GBC deciding to ban styrofoam in ISKCON nearly 15 years ago, (Click here for the full article)

Shyamasundar Prabhu Update
by Malati devi dasi
Posted January 10, 2008

Dear Devotees: My grateful obeisance's to one and all, particularly those good saintly souls who responded to my e-mail last August. As many may now know, HG Shyamasundar Prabhu underwent a liver transplant via the "living-donor" route. In this type of operation, the donor is a healthy compatible person who donates 60% of their liver to the other. In each instance, the pieces of liver regenerate to full size, the only organ in the human body which is able to do so. It is a fairly recent procedure, as operations go, but has been greatly successful and by-passes the long wait for some one else to die before one, gbc receives an organ. Thirty five devotees from around the world came forward, but it turned out that the "perfect match" (Click here for the full article)

When's the Time for Raganuga, Anyway?
by Niscala dasi
Posted January 6, 2008

In Srila Prabhupada's books we see a stress on the need for following sadhana bhakti- up to a point- and then rejecting rules and regulations in favor of the spontaneous loving platform. The difficulty is knowing exactly when to make the transition, and again Srila Prabhupada's books have the answer- when one is pure, free from material desires. But this presents another problem- devotees never think themselves pure, or advanced. So does this mean that by definition, devotees never approach raganuga? That cannot be right as the implication of this would render meaningless much of Srila Prabhupada's teachings and that of the line of acaryas before him. How can one approach raganuga while still maintaining the vaisnava standard of humility? (Click here for the full article)

Vrindavan Gurukula Students Complete a Dandavat Parikrama

by AnandaV
Posted January 1, 2008

Last week, fifteen students from Bhaktivedanta Gurukula and International School completed a dandavat parikrama on the Vrindavan parikrama path. Rather than walking, they circumambulated Vrindavan by offering prostrations on the ground, falling like a stick (the meaning of dandavat) again and again, until the entire path was traversed.

Grade 8 students completed this difficult challenge along the 11 km path. It was not an easy task - physically, emotionally, or spiritually. It was performed as a concluding activity to their Gurukula education and in preparation for their entering High school, where more maturity and independent responsibility is needed. So it would be great if some devotees can provide me with the seeds, as then there would be no doubt about their authenticity. I would obviously provide with the postage costs for your kindness.

Mother Looking for Devotee Son: Frank De Fuster

He was last heard from when he was staying in Calcutta twenty year ago! I promised Thierry that I would put a message on a few websites. Racism Posing As Vedic Tradition
by Shiva das

Some priests of the Jagannath Temple in Puri have been vocal recently in their condemnation of ISKCON holding Rathayatras on days not traditionally reserved for Rathayatra. They have complained to various government officials and tried to make them force ISKCON to cancel those Rathayatras. They have also started a campaign of condemnation of ISKCON over some undergarments being sold which display various Vedic deities on them. They do not complain that ISKCON is selling the undergarments; the complaint is that ISKCON isn't trying to stop merchants from selling the undergarments. (Click here for the full article)

Prayer Request for Jahnavi Dasi

We are asking for the prayers and support from all her friends and well-wishers.

In the past couple of months Jahnavi has experienced several burns due to severe neuropathy, a symptom of her diabetes. Because of the neuropathy she has very little or no feeling in most of her extremities and it is therefore easily possible to get hurt without knowing. She had been in the hospital about two months earlier for an operation on one such burn and during that time the wound got infected with MRSA, a medication-resistant bacterium that is getting increasingly more common. Mature, liberal-minded Vaishnavas are needed to help open (or contribute funds toward opening) a center in gorgeous, progressive and highly-intellectual Brattleboro, Vermont. Brattleboro is a beautiful and amazing town on the Connecticut River in southern Vermont just north of the Massachusetts border. Down-to-earth yet ultra-sophisticated, it has a huge alternative community of vegetarians, spiritualists and natural healers who practice, of all places, at the local hospital! Just to give an idea of how ready for and receptive to Krishna consciousness this town is, one of the featured events on January 2008's "First Friday Gallery Walk" downtown was a presentation of vintage 1920's and 1930's Krishna Calendar Art by a gallery specializing in Indian art and antiques! Gita Jayanti

The Bhagavad-Gita, or The Song of God, is one of the oldest and most poetic scriptures in the world. Like other holy books, it is filled with the knowledge society needs in order to live a God conscious and moral life. There are 700 slokas, or verses, describing everything from the nature of this material world to what the ultimate goal of life is: developing pure love for God (Krsna). Every December, devotees of Krishna across the globe celebrate Gita Jayanti, the day the Lord spoke the Bhagavad-Gita to His disciple and dear most friend, Arjuna. (Click here for the full article)

ISKCON and the Hare Krishna Movement: An Analysis of the Hare Krishna Movement in the UK
by Ratimanjari d.d.
Posted January 6, 2008

A group of A-level students recently put the following question to me as part of its Religious Studies programme on Hinduism. They wanted to know about the development of the Hare Krishna movement, the reasons for its popularity, the role of ISKCON, and how the Hare Krishna movement has transformed over the years. These questions form the basis of this short article.

It was interesting that the students, and obviously their teacher, made a distinction between ISKCON and the Hare Krishna movement. As little as a decade ago ISKCON was the sole and undisputed proponent of bhakti, self-realisation, etc. That the students and their teacher made a distinction between ISKCON and the Hare Krishna Movement is significant because today the field has changed and expanded considerably. Radio Krishna Turns It Up a Notch

Last Sunday evening listeners of Utah's Internet Radio Krishna were delighted to see for the first time titles and artists displayed by their various media players. Indeed, the list of artists and titles extends to almost 14,000, possibly the largest selection of Krishna audio on the planet.

There have been many devoted listeners since Radio Krishna went to the internet four years ago. However, until yesterday, we hadn't the technology to satisfy their curiosity about the titles of the songs and the artists. With the recent purchase of a PC server for $ 1,500.00 and with the technical expertise of Balarama Das, the curiosity of listerners will no longer go unsatisfied. (Click here for the full article)
