Ideas On Teaching Cow Protection?
by Aparajita dasi
Posted January 31, 2007

My very small community in Reno, Nevada is planning to participate in the Earth Day events in April. Our idea is to have a booth dedicated to cow protection and how it relates to the environment. Our largest challenge is to convey the facts on how mother cow and mother earth's health are one and the same.

I hope that others have done this and might have some effective ideas on how to present without excluding people. We live in a huge ranching area where even the university has its own slaughterhouse. So if anyone has any ideas and resources to gain good, valid information, please write to me at april.bhakti108@gmail.com.

Seeking Mahatma CD
by Kris Smith
Posted January 29, 2007

I am based in London, U.K., and I'm looking for a tape or CD of a Mahatma recording. The only info I have is that it's a live recording of "greatest hits" made at a Krsna Fest. A woman guest singer sings a couple of very sweet versions of the maha-mantra whilst urging the crowd to sing along. In fact, right at the end you can hear her saying: "Singalong."

Where Are They Now?
by Cesar Martinez Vargas, Nama Hatta Association Peru
Posted January 27, 2007

I'm Cesar Martinez from Peru, asking about the destiny of those foremost Vaisnavas whose performance made them emblematic of the sweetest features of classical Krsna consciousness. Acyutananda Swami was among the foremost preachers and special agents of Srila Prabhupada, empowered to discuss with Mayavadis, as was Yasodananda Maharaja, another foremost sannyasi committed to training new generations -- a nice children's educator in Prabhupada's times. Moreover, Acyutananda Swami became a heart-melter via his sweet and melodious voice, which enticed audiences. What has become of their lives? I would be very grateful for this capital information.

Business Model for Vicarious Cow Protection
by Madhava Gosh
Posted January 24, 2007

For years we have been kicking around the idea of vicarious cow protection. Facing the reality that most will have to, for the time being, purchase milk from cows that will be slaughtered, what is a sincere devotee of the Supreme Cowherd Boy, Krishna, to do? The idea is that if someone has to buy Putana milk, they can purify it by contributing to cow protection programs.

We have roughly calculated that it costs about $10-12 in the US to produce a gallon of milk where the cow shall be given life time protection. Compare that to the $3 slaughtered cows' milk would typically for. The concept is that by paying the differential, or portion thereof. into a cow protection program or endowment fund, the consumer would in effect be consuming protected milk vicariously. A cow is protected and milk is available.

Whole Foods has applied this concept to wind generated electricity. (Click here for the full article)

Alice Coltrane
by unknown
Posted January 24, 2007

Jazz musician Alice Coltrane passed away last weekend at 69. Devotees may remember her performance at the New York Ratha Yatra and her meeting with Prabhupada in 1977.

She was featured in the December 1977 issue of Back to Godhead:

"Alice Coltrane: A New Album -- Just arrived in the stores is a new release by Alice Coltrane; wife of thelate master saxophonist John Coltrane. The current Warner LP, Radha-Krsna Nama Sankirtana ('singing the names of Radha and Krsna'), features Arjuna John Coltrane, Jr., on drums and Alice (Turiyasangitananda) on keyboards and harp. 'The Hare Krsna mantra,' she says about one cut, 'is theMaha-mantra. Of all the mantras it is a liberating mantra because it contains three of the most powerful names of the Supreme'."

The Modern Suffering of Vrndavana
by Urmila devi dasi
Posted January 18, 2007

First of two articles

A visitor to the Vrindavana area cannot help but notice that in many places literal and figurative filth has been smeared over the body of the Lord. Much of the problem is due to the huge influx of tourists and visitors, from India and abroad, that has steadily increased over the last thirty years. But who has invited all these people? It is Lord Caitanya who asked his followers to excavate the holy places and develop the Vrindavana area, publicizing its glories.

Following the desire of Lord Caitanya, Prabhupada widely advertised Vrindavana throughout the world. The Lord and His servants do not intend, therefore, for Vrindavana to remain as unpopulated fields. (Click here for the full article)

Request for Health-Conscious Recipes
by Bhaktin Alison
Posted January 13, 2007

I am a disciple of Rtadhvaja Swami Maharaja and aspiring for initiation. I also recently re-joined Weight Watchers to help me manage my health, nutrition and portion sizes, since I want to maintain the health of my body so I can continue serving my spiritual master and the devotees as long as possible. I recently finished my Ph.D. in counseling psychology and the stress and hectic schedule have taken a toll on my weight and sense of well-being, so I am trying to make some positive changes.

As some of you may know, Weight Watchers recipes, even the vegetarian ones, are not always devotee-friendly. The vegan ones often have lots of garlic, onions and/or mushrooms in them. As a devotee, my priority remains on pleasing Krishna first. I am requesting that any relatively lower-fat, lower-calorie, and especially nutritious recipes be posted either here on Chakra and/or sent to me directly at Alipsych176@aol.com. Police Claim Progress in Solving ISKCON Temple Blast

submitted by Richard Wyndham, reposted from telegraphindia.com
Posted January 27, 2007

Imphal, Manipur -- Police claim to have unmasked those who hurled a grenade at an ISKCON temple that turned Janmashtami festivities into a bloodbath last year.

Director-general of Manipur police A.K. Parashar told media on January 19 that police had identified the assailants. While he declined to divulge names of any group or individual behind the attacks on devotees, the police chief ruled out the hand of any Muslim fundamentalist group behind the killings. "We know their identities. We will pick them up and punish them. It's only a question of time before we take those responsible behind the blast into custody. Then everything will be as clear as daylight."

Six persons, including two children and a girl, were killed while more than 50, including four foreign nationals, were wounded when a grenade exploded at the ISKCON temple here on August 16. (Click here for the full article)

Fortified Milk
by Vegetarian Resource Group
Posted January 24, 2007

A Chakra Editors' note: Here is the answer, from the Vegetarian Resource Group:

What is the difference between vitamin D2 and D3?

"D-2 (ergocalciferol) is derived from yeast, while D-3 (cholecalciferol) is derived from lanolin (from sheep [wool]) or fish. D-2 and D-3 are both used to fortify milk and other dairy products. Some D-3 vitamin supplements are made with fish oil. D-3 can also be produced by plants and fungi, but this isn't as common as using lanolin or fish as a source."

The Vegetarian Resource Group offers this bit of further advice: "The purpose of our food ingredient research is intended to educate people to enable them to make informed decisions about the foods that they choose to eat. It is very easy to get wrapped up in the microscopic details and ignore larger issues. (Click here for the full article)

When you go along the parikrama path you have to turn left at the Krishna Balarama tree and go a few more meters. Many nice Indian and western devotees are living in this area. Second of two articles
In the first article of this two-part series, Urmila prabhu detailed some of the difficult social problems besetting modern Vrndavana, including widespread maltreatment of cattle, violence towards women and heedless development leading to likely environmental devastation.

Forty years ago, environmentalism was considered outrageous and socially deviant. Science and technology, we were told, would give us happiness and prosperity. Authorities touted the artificial and man-made as superior. But, today even Wal-Mart carries organically produced produce to meet the huge demand. There are also examples, such as abortion and same-sex marriages, where what was once rejected as abominable becomes an acceptable part of a society, often within a decade or so of the initial propaganda. Hatha-Yoga in South India
by Jayananda das
Posted January 13, 2007

This is a reply to Bhakta Shane who inquired about Hatha-yoga classes in South India. In Chennai there is the famous KYM (Krishnamacarya Yoga Mandir), dedicated to propagating the teachings of Tirumalai Krishnamacarya, who is considered by many the most influental Hatha-yoga-teacher of the last century. His students include Sri K.Pattabhi Jois (Astanga-vinyasa tradition), B.K.S. Iyengar (Iyengar-yoga), T.K.V. Desikachar (his son and leader of KYM), as well as Indra Devi, Krishnamurti etc.

Krishnamacarya was initiated in Sri Sampradaya. In all the pictures throughout his life he is always seen with his forehead decorated with vaishnava tilak. At one point he was offered leadership position in one Sri Vaishnava math, which in my mind indicates, that he was not a Sri Vaishnava in external appearance only. (Click here for the full article)

New Vrindaban History, for the Record
by Ravindra Svarupa dasa
Posted January 5, 2007

[Editors' note: Chakra has chosen not to publish the recent accusations against Radhanath Swami, Malati Prabhu and others, as cyberspace is not a productive place to conduct a "trial". Instead, we encourage anyone who thinks that s/he has new information to turn this over to the appropriate authorities. They have access to all the necessary resources, including forensic experts, detectives, psychologists, juries and judges. ISKCON does not. We also would like to note that several individuals, whose names have been mentioned in the numerous texts, are either innocent bystanders or victims, and that they and their loved ones are being hurt every time these stories are rehashed on the web. Since the original events happened, many of these people have had children, who are now old enough to use the internet and google their parents. We are concerned about the effect that these texts are having on them.]

I wish to offer a few remarks in regard to some emails concerning H.H. Radhanatha Swami, Tirtha prabhu and others.

As some of you may recall, in 1987 the North American GBC decided that, for the protection of Srila Prabhupada's movement, it should cooperate with the government in its case against Kirtanananda Swami and others. On three occasions, I myself testified in court as a prosecution witness. And I spent some time in consultation with the lead federal prosecutor, Michael Stein.

On several occasions, I was able to observe at first hand the thorough and systematic way the team of prosecution lawyers and FBI agents made their cases not only against Kirtanananda but against many of his lieutenants and foot-soldiers. Some of them, to protect themselves, eventually testified against Kirtanananda. So far as I could see, the government was thorough and relentless. (Click here for the full article)

Protecting Vaisnava Women

by GBC task force team members, Reposted from Dandavats.com
Posted January 2, 2007

Around the world, a leading cause of death and injury for women is association with violent men. Women can be beaten and abused by the very people they may look to for protection: husbands, fathers, civil authorities, members of the armed forces. In some cases, even clergy members violate the trust of the women in their congregations.

ISKCON's GBC has constituted a task force charged with identifying and rectifying abuse of women. Domestic violence, sexual assault and other atrocities may take place in any organization, so following on their approach of openly addressing past problems of child abuse, ISKCON's leaders have taken a step toward healing rather than hiding injuries to ISKCON's female members. Purifying the Holy Places That Purify Us
by Gaura Krishna das
Posted January 26, 2007

I read the article "Cleaning Vrindavan" by Karuna Purna dasi, and I was very moved by her concern for the sacred land of Vrindavan. It struck me also, the contrast she pointed out between the degradation that is going on there side by side with the peaceful lives of devotees "chanting japa and chatting in the manicured MVT gardens." It is true; all too often we get caught up in the peacefulness that devotional life affords us, not seeing the immense responsibility that we have as citizens of the world to combat the degradation and negativity that goes on around us.

One may say, "How is it possible? It is the Age of Kali. These things are meant to happen." That is true, but did that stop Maharaja Pariksit from taking up his sword to threaten Kali with his very life? Did it stop Srila Prabhupada from spending his life's blood on travelling the world, writing books, taking disciples, opening up temples, and managing a worldwide society, all in an effort to combat Kali? Appearance Day of Sri Advaita-Acharya

by Richard Wyndham
Posted January 25, 2007

The foremost of all the Vaishnavas who reside at Navadwip is Sri Advaita Acarya, whose virtuous presence has made all the worlds blessed. He is the most preeminent preceptor in all fields including knowledge, renunciation and devotion. In explaining Krsna-bhakti he is like unto Lord Shankara (Siva) himself, and whatever scriptures that exist within the three worlds he explains in the light of Krsna-bhakti. With the intense eagerness he continually worships the Shalagram of Sri Krsna with Tulasi manjaris and Ganges water. By the momentum of his spiritual force, his loud shouts pierce the coverings of this universe and, resounding throughout Vaikuntha, reach the ears of Sri Krsna. Hearing this loving summons saturated with devotion, Sri Krsna advents Himself.

On the seventh day of the bright fortnight of the month of Magh, the great ocean of ecstasy swelled to its limits, being forcibly attracted by the moon of Adwaita, Who appeared from the womb of Sri Nabhadevi as the moon appears in the autumn sky. (Click here for the full article)

Get Out of Debt Now!
by Anandamayi Dasi
Posted January 24, 2007

I would like to offer all devotees who currently have debt an opportunity to eliminate it. As many devotees have outside responsibilities, we have taken on debt; Credit card, student loans, mortgage ect. sometimes taking us longer than expected to pay them off. Nobody wants to be paying off a mortgage for 30 years when they could save hundreds of thousands of dollars and use your savings to go to the holy dham.

This is not a hardship program so you should be current on your payments, living pay check to paycheck or financially stable.

I am offering free debt analysis. This will show you how much we can save you and how fast we can payoff all bills including mortgages. We took 18 years off our mortgage and saved 321k wow and our payments remained the same.

Call me at +1-818-998-0125 for information. (Click here for the full article)

Devotees Should Set Example in Vrndavan
by Ravi das
Posted January 24, 2007

I have noted with interest the recent submissions by Her Grace Urmila devi dasi (Part 1 and Part 2) and the follow-up by Srimati Karuna Purna dasi. There are also articles and comments on Chakra on similar environmental topics by other devotees. There seems to be a growing awareness that perhaps as devotees we have to improve our rather lacklustre record in connection with environmental issues.

They all express understandable concern and consternation about the current situation in Sri Vrindavan Dham and proffer some solutions. On one level this is very positive: many devotees becoming inspired on the same topic. I have often found that this is the precursor of the Lord inspiring devotees into action in that area, so there is cause for optimism.

I have lived in Vrindavan working as a researcher for the past two years with the Braj Foundation and also worked for several years before that with the Friends of Vrindavan. In regard to the holy Dham I would humbly advise to step with some caution. (Click here for the full article)

Eco-Responsible Prasada Distribution - a Positive Alternative
by Lilasuka dasi
Posted January 23, 2007

I am so happy to see some environmental issues being discussed amongst the devotee community. It is an issue for everyone in the world wherever you are. The saying "Think Globally, Act Locally" is particularly applicable at this time in history. We all affect each other and we each make a difference, everyday.

Recognizing a need for change, I have heard from a very reliable source that the GBC made a resolution in the early 1990's that no ISKCON center should use Styrofoam. In the late 1980's even McDonalds made the same decision, so we were not far behind - now it is a matter of commitment and implementation. After the use of leaves for prasada serve out, certainly washable plates is the most cost effect, responsible and smartest option, however for large scale prasada distribution like on campus, events away from the temple or for larger congregations it can be impractical. A great alternative to foam and virgin paper made from trees are products made from Bagasse (sugar cane fiber). (Click here for the full article)

Cleaning Vrindavan
by Karuna Purna dasi
Posted January 21, 2007

I want to thank Urmila for her article on Vrindavan. My first shock arriving in Vrindavan after nineteen years of absence was seeing the amount of rubbish, plastic bags and inedible food in the streets that not only pollute Vrindavan, but also constitute a hazard, particularly for cows' health and ultimately their life, as you very rightly pointed out.

I was also shocked at the physical abuse that one of my riksha driver suffered by a police man at the end of the Parikrama path. I was sitting in the riksha and nothing stopped this so called traffic warden from slapping ruthlessly and for no reason the unfortunate driver. Although we understand that physical abuse may be part of Indian idiosyncrasies, physical violence is nevertheless unacceptable. (Click here for the full article)

Weight Watchers, Indian Style
by Rashmi
Posted January 19, 2007

I read your request posted on Chakra and wanted to share a resource which might be useful to measure points for Indian cuisine - and can be easily modified by leaving out onion and garlic and substituing with hing (asfoetida) and jeera (cumin) (both zero points). Please check: info.curryleaves.com/. It is maintained by an indian lady who is also following weight watchers. I myself have been on weight watchers for some time and found this to be an excellent diet monitoring scheme.

GBC Statement
by ISKCON GBC Executive Committee
Posted January 11, 2007

New discussions have recently been going on about criminal activities that took place in New Vrindavana in the 1980s. These events were thoroughly investigated by the United States Attorney's Office, which contains some of the finest attorneys in the country, and several individuals were prosecuted and convicted. The case has now been closed for almost two decades.

The GBC is not a legal or law enforcement agency. It is an ecclesiastical body that lacks the resources to match the ability of the federal government to deal with these matters. All it can do is refer such matters to the appropriate legal authorities. We can simply state below the facts of the case as we understand them: (Click here for the full article)

Mayapur Preschool Offers Learning Through Play
by Ila devi dasi
Posted January 7, 2007

What is happening in the Sri Mayapur International School's Preschool?

After attending the morning temple program with their parents, three- and four-year old devotees eagerly come to the Preschool for their day of learning-through-play.

Clearly, preschool years are very important. Research shows that the first five years of a child's life will have a major impact on his learning potential for the rest of his/her life. Children have to develop certain skills -- Gross Motor skills involving using larger muscles of the body, Fine Motor skills in preparation of using the fingers and hands for writing, Language and Communication skills, Cognitive skills (developing the logical faculty), Self-Help skills and also Social skills. Most importantly, a child must have a positive experience of early learning and develop an interest in school that will help to give him enthusiasm and determination in later years. Vaisnava Bibliography

Commemorating Srila Jiva Gosvami's disappearance day on the sukla-tritiya of the month of Pausa, Gaudiya Kutir and Bhasa.Net have the privilege of offering the global assembly of Vaisnavas a new online resource: An online bibliography database of Vaisnava literature.

Srila Jiva Gosvami, the master of philosophers and the scholar of scholars, established a large reference library at the premises of the Radha-Damodara temple in Vrindavana - a resource that is said to have at one point hosted over 2000 manuscripts of works modern and ancient.

Following in the wake of his inspiration to preserve Vaisnava literature for access for all students of Vaisnava theology, the Bhasa.Net Bibliography project was conceived as an aid in locating texts of interests. (Click here for the full article)
