Old-Growth Banyans Face Destruction
Photos and article by Dinanath das
Posted February 15, 2011

One of the massive banyan trees under threat.

This is an urgent message to anyone and everyone. Between 15,000 and 20,000 giant, ancient, sacred old-growth Banyan trees are to be cut down on the road from Bhuvaneshvar to Jagannath Puri beginning this week.

Some of these trees were planted by King Prataparudra himself on the request of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Millions and millions of pilgrims have sat, meditated and worshiped under these trees since time immemorial, and now they will all be cut down and destroyed if we don't act now. These trees will be destroyed starting this week unless we rally to save them.

Krishna says in the Bhagavad-gita, "Of all trees I am the sacred Banyan tree," so please try and understand the crisis which we are facing. These are not ordinary trees. I was out there taking photos last week, and some of these trees are larger than two or three buses put together. (Click here for the full article)

  Prayers for Bhadra Priya
by ISKCON Toronto
Posted February 9, 2011

With heavy hearts, we would like to call for all devotees in our community to pray for Bhadra Priya devi dasi, who is in an active state of leaving her body. Bhadra Priya prabhu joined the Hare Krishna movement in Montreal in the early 1970s and was then part of our Toronto community for many years.

Bhadra Priya prabhu has been dealing with life-threatening cancer for a few years now. It prompted her return to Krsna consciousness after many years of living away from a temple, and she is currently in Alachua, Florida, surrounded by devotees. In recent years she joined us here in Toronto for many festivals, programs and events in our community.

We ask for all devotees to pray for her during these final stages of her life. (Click here for the full article)

Devotees Join UK Food Relief Program
by Parasuram das
Posted February 9, 2011

For many years Hare Krishna Food for All, the Kingscross, UK prasad distribution team, has worked together with a local Catholic church to benefit the homeless community. Four days a week the devotees deliver cake and biscuits to a church in Camden, North London — enough cake for about 300 people.

We are a member of "Unleash," an organisation made up mainly of Christian groups helping the needy all over England. In fact we are the only non-Christian group, and they wrote a very favourable article about us on the front page of their magazine. (Click here for the full article)
