Altars And Deity Outfits Wanted
by Tulso Bhai
Posted February 26, 2009

Does anyone know if there is a book of different altars from across the globe from the ISCKON Centers? I am in search of a huge silver altar that was made in Mumbai by the wood carver in Mdhav Bhaug. If any one knows of a big silver Singh Assan altar from one of the ISCKON temple, I would like to know which one.

I am also in search of some to make outfits for my Deties, Sri Krishna Vrindavanbhari lal and Sri Radha Radheshwari, Sri Sita Ram Lakshman and my beloved Hanuman. I am looking for both festive outfits and daily changing outfits. (Click here for the full article)

Where Angels Fear to Tread
by Rupanuga das
Posted February 25, 2009

The editors of the 1983 revised Gita did not believe that they actually interpolated philosophy or style.* Their idea was to improve both translations and purports by transposing and clarifying portions of old manuscripts, etc. existing prior to the one finally submitted to Macmillan in 1972. Truly, many of the grammatical, spelling, format and historical inaccuracies corrected in the revision would have been approved by Srila Prabhupada himself had he been consulted.

Be that as it may, Srila Prabhupada never instructed anyone to use a procedure of re-visiting and researching old manuscripts or dictations to revise future printings of his first editions. (Click here for the full article)

GBC Meetings, Day 1
by Ananda Tirtha das, GBC Corresponding Secretary
Posted February 23, 2009

The 2009 Annual General Meeting of ISKCON's Governing Body Commission commenced with arati and guru-puja kirtana to Srila Prabhupada, who is present in murti form in the meeting hall. Apart from the large murti, this year there is a small murti of Srila Prabhupada fixed on a beautiful altar near the Chairman's seat. After the reading of Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.9.16, Ramai Swami, Chairman, began the proceedings by explaining the absence of several members, mostly due to health issues. He also gave a brief summary of the Executive Committee's work during the year.

After this, as is now the tradition, the BBT, headed by Madhu Sevita Prabhu and Brahma Muhurta Prabhu, made the opening presentation on the achievements of the BBT, book distribution results and trends across the world, and translating and printing highlights, such as: (Click here for the full article)

Peace Proposal
by Members of ISKCON Bangalore, submitted by Madhu Pandit, ISKCON Bangalore
Posted February 22, 2009

Please find below a proposal from the members of the governing body of iskcon Bangalore group in pursuance of peaceful co existence under a single GBC.

Dear Bhakticaru Maharaj,

Thanks for calling Madhu Pandit Prabhu several times in your efforts to bring in some settlement of the dispute after your meeting with Sravanananda Prabhu in the USA. Besides your efforts, Yasomatinandan Prabhu and recently Shankabrit Prabhu and Amiya Vilas swami have been desiring that we sit and talk. Also Jagatchandra Prabhu from Cochin whom you know well and one Muralidhar Prabhu from Hubli has been trying to build bridges between the parties at the ground. Two days back Shankdari Prabhu from Madurai also sought a sitting with a few of our governing body members to move in the direction of some settlement.

Madhu Pandit Prabhu had sent you a proposal by email after speaking to you in Bombay for which so far we have not received any response. That proposal did not envisage handing over all the properties under us to the control and ownership of the GBC but was a 'live and let live' proposal. (Click here for the full article)

Working Farms Don't Have Castles
by Malati devi dasi
Posted February 18, 2009

Bhagavata-Purana das ended his article "On Selling ISKCON Farms" with these words, which in and of themselves, are correct: "Maybe it is not easy; not enough stress has been given to develop rural communities, but Srila Prabhupada's instruction is there. We have done something; we have obtained the farms. Now is the time to develop them."

I think this needs to be discussed in terms of practical application. The problem I see is that many of our farms were former estates with big castles and chateaus that require hugh amounts of maintenance and funds just to keep them up and running.

Most "real" farms are not thusly encumbered. (Click here for the full article)

Rukmini Dvarakanatha's 40th Anniversary
by Svavasa dasa (Temple President, ISKCON LA)
Posted February 9, 2009

40 years ago this June, Srila Prabhupada personally installed the beautiful deities of Sri Sri Rukmini Dwarakanatha with his own hands. He would often teach his disciples the process of Deity worship, by lovingly worshiping these small Radha Krishna deities himself.

They were installed on La Cienaga Ave in Los Angeles, California in 1969. The "La Cienaga" temple was the first temple in Southern California and Rukmini Dwarakanatha were the first Radha Krishna deities installed as the Krishna Consciousness movement expanded from New York to the rest of the world. On Selling ISKCON Farms
by Bhagavata-Purana das
Posted February 8, 2009

Moved by the efforts of Costa Rica devotees in defending the existence of their rural farm, and especially by the impelling necessity of protecting the Nueva Vrajamandala project in Spain, I'll try to write something on a farm-selling pattern in present-day ISKCON. My purpose is to understand what's happening, get some feedback from others and generate some public and societal consciousness of the problem. I am writing this article without much theoretical, academic, social or psychological context. I may stretch a point or two, but the general mood is rather easy.

The cases of Nueva Goloka in Costa Rica, of Sri Bhakti-lata Puri in Argentina and of Nueva Vrajamandala in Spain are similar. Devotees acquired the properties through donations and book distribution, (Click here for the full article)

As you may know, Malati Prabhu has inspired us to compile some of the memories of Srila Prabhupada's women disciples. We hope this compilation will preserve for posterity Srila Prabhupada's legacy of exchanges with his women disciples and will illumine still more facets of his glories - how his reciprocation with them endeared his women disciples to him and gave them life-long inspiration and guidance.

The second day of the GBC meetings opened with a presentation by the Law Book Committee. The committee is working to classify and update the new law book for ease of use. A major highlight of their work has been the creation of a searchable wiki with the last ten years of GBC Resolutions and previous version of the Law Book.

Following the presentation and subsequent discussion, the GBC Body voted for a few GBC members to review the proposed updated Law Book. Kavicandra Swami, Sesa Das, and Malati Devi Dasi volunteered to take up this service. (Click here for the full article)

Inspiration Can Sometimes be Agitating
by Niscala dasi
Posted February 9, 2009

I appreciate very much that Hridayananda Maharaja was prepared to stick his neck out on the issue of how gay people should be treated. His courage, compassion and spiritual vision are very inspiring. I hope and pray that ISKCON will take the guidance, rid itself of small-minded petty hatreds and prejudices, and progress in spiritual vision.

But I don't think we can always expect that good words will not agitate anyone, and it may be a greater austerity of speech to speak what is not appreciated — such as Jesus Christ (Click here for the full article)

Aravade Temple Opening Festival
by Radhaprema dasi
Posted February 8, 2009

The official opening of the temple in Aravade is set to turn this usually quiet, bucolic village into a buzzing, spiritual wonderland, with thousands of devotees, including H.H. Subhag Swami and H.H. Chandramauli Swami, arriving for the festival, inarguably a first for this pastoral land.

The centre began in March 1996 as a two-room brick and mud-daub temple roofed with tin sheets, situated on land donated by H.H. Lokanath Swami's brother. In spite of the rudimentary facilities, 25 to 30 devotees would attend evening arati with diligence and enthusiasm. Harinama would be held every Saturday, and then prasadam would be served. Letter From Hridayananda Maharaja
by Hridayananda das Goswami
Posted February 6, 2009

A letter of blessings that I sent to a gay couple has caused an extraordinary amount of controversy, and so I am writing here to clarify my understanding of this issue, and the intention of my letter.

In the Bhagavad-gita 17.15, Lord Krishna states that "Austerity of speech consists in speaking words that are truthful, pleasing, beneficial, and not agitating to others..."

I have clearly failed to some extent in this duty as prescribed by Lord Krishna, given the bitter and insulting nature of some responses. I sincerely apologize to the devotees for this evident failure. (Click here for the full article)

GBC Meetings: Days 4 & 5
by Ananda Tirtha das
Posted February 25, 2009

For the last several years, strategic planning has been a major theme of the GBC meetings. Several days of the Annual General Meeting, as well as the second GBC meeting later in the year, is exclusively focused on this important theme. This year was no exception. Days four through six saw all regular work shelved and the entire Body, plus many other devotees, come together to proactively discuss the best way for the GBC and ISKCON to prepare for the future.

Gopal Bhatta Das has been the chief spearhead for this initiative and was the chair for this part of the meetings. He began by asking everyone to take a few minutes to individually meditate on Srila Prabhupada's vision for ISKCON, and to then analyze how far we have been able to fulfill that. I'm excited to announce a new website, launched on Lord Nityananda's appearance day. This site was born of the growing need for networking in the largest devotee community in North America (New Ramanreti, in Alachua, Florida), put together by my husband Varnadi.

I thought it would be useful to the greater devotee world as well, as it offers a glimpse into the workings of the New Ramanreti community. You can find out about seminars, devotee businesses, accommodation, events, services, and lots more.

Our temple president is very happy with the concept of this new website, which is a very effective extension of the small bulletin board at the temple itself. (Click here for the full article)

Homosexuality Raises Ethical And Practical Questions - Part I
by Giridhari das (Brasilia, Brazil)

During my touring of Brazil I came across the following administrative situation: an initiated devotee who had graduated from our nine-month Bhakti-Shastri Seminary had been giving classes at the temple, and also teaching a bhakti-shastri course to the other devotees. She had been doing that for some time, to the satisfaction of the leaders and congregation. Then she decided to move in with her girlfriend, and they signed some paperwork between themselves, making it as close to a legal marriage as they could. The other girl also became a devotee by her influence. (Click here for the full article)
