My Brothers Hare Krishna Wedding
by Devala das
Posted February 27, 2007

In the midst of taking my final exams in college, the thought of traveling to India to witness the first marriage of the family lingered within my mind. I anticipated the reunion of our whole family and was looking forward to getting away from school and having a little R&R.

After a long and painful flight I arrived in Delhi to be greeted by my eldest brother Dhruva. I spent over week visiting the holy temples in Vrindavan, and ended my evenings with Aindra's roaring bhajans. Although I needed a little spiritual relaxing, I remembered the main reason for my trip was to assist my brother Drdha and his bride Gandharvika in their marriage preparations. Realizing this, I changed my plans and headed down early to South India. (Click here for the full article)

If you want to improve the situation for Vrindavana's ecology, cows, bulls, and local residents, there is a fantastic program you can support or join. It is so simple it has no official name other than "Bullock Cart Preaching." The heart of the program is a traveling bullock cart with a handful of devotees who give out prasadam and books to the residents of the Vrindavana area, along with showing nightly puppet shows and movies. The books include a Brijbasi language explanation of how to treat the environment and cows. The movies include documentaries on cow protection. The cart has solar panels that allow the devotees to charge batteries without petrol. What results are they having? (Click here for the full article)

The Conch Building now has an elevator (but no elevator music), which makes it easy to ascend to the roof, where the GBC Conference Room is located. It stops on the landing halfway between the fourth floor and the roof. On the way down the other day, I saw graffiti on the nameplate of the elevator company, ICON Elevators. Someone wrote "SK" above the "IC" in ICON and put a caret underneath the "IC", which, combined, served as a reminder of ISKCON. Not only that, but during a meeting, Praghosa Prabhu said that "ISKCON" stands for the International Society for Kindess and CONsideration. That fits the theme of the soon-to-start Gaura-purnima Festival this year: The Festival of Loving Exchange. (Click here for the full article)

The retreat began in front of Srila Prabhupada in his puspa-samadhi, after the GBC members and several dozen senior devotees ate breakfast on the samadhi veranda.

While the GBC members stood before Srila Prabhupada in the samadhi, each received a colorful pavitra, and together they recited a statement of intent of service to Srila Prabhupada and ISKCON. (Click here for the full article)

Bhakti Bhringa Govinda Swami presented the history, which began in 1999 with the purchase of 116 acres of beautiful land outside Almaty. In 2002 the Society for Krishna consciousness was registered. Then the president of the country changed the land laws and allowed individual Kazakh citizens to own land, so the devotees attempted to privatize their land in 2004. I've been following the discussions about Sulocana Prabhu's murder online, and I have to admit that it's caused me a lot of pain. Back in 1980/'81, I was traveling through London from the Middle East and met Sulocana Prabhu in the brahmacari room at the Soho St. temple. He seemed like a nice enough fellow. I remember seeing the famous photo in BTG where he is on the L.A. altar, offering arotika to his beloved Deities Sri Sri Rukmini Dwarkadisa. He told me that he had been Their pujari for a number of years. Sulocana also showed me a collection of his Srila Prabhupada, Lord Caitanya and Radha-Krishna pendants that he designed and sold to devotees throughout the movement. We hit it off and Tribhuvannatha Prabhu liked him too. I met him in London a few times and even lent him 50 pounds, although I never really expected or wanted it back. Please note that this year we intend again to very strictly guard against any illegal or illicit activity in the Dham, including intoxication and child abuse. Unfortunately, in the past a few reckless persons have thus endangered themselves and others, as well as the whole standing of ISKCON in India. Therefore, on the registration forms again this year, we have a section that is intended to help us keep the festival free of these unwanted and serious disturbances. All festival-goers must carefully read this section, especially regarding the serious consequences of being caught engaging in any illegal or illicit activity. (Click here for the full article)

Bhaktins Wanted in Tucson

The Tucson Temple in Arizona is welcoming already dedicated and/or aspiring to be Krishna conscious Bhaktins. The temple here is truly an oasis in the desert! We have the best vegetarian restaurant in town, a nice way to deliver prasad to community. This temple is not a large one, so the Vaishnava living here, totaling around 20, acts as a family. This Temple is a great place to start your studies in Krishna Consciousness. The temple president, Sandamini prabhu is very knowledgeable, sweet, and merciful. She is also very regulated and dedicated, yet balanced in her devotional life. There is always nice service to do here. Plus, she and her husband Dasarath prabhu are open to devotees creating services for themselves that capture individual interest and aptitudes. (Click here for the full article)

Kazakhstan: Do-It-Yourself Demolition for Embattled Hare Krishna Commune?

by Igor Rotar, Forum 18 News Service

This article was published by F18News on: 31 January 2007

As official pressure on the Hare Krishna commune near the commercial capital Almaty mounts, three more home owners have been served demolition notices, Hare Krishna sources told Forum 18 News Service. If they fail to demolish their own homes by 2 February, the authorities will do so and charge them for the cost. Thirteen Hare Krishna-owned homes were bulldozed last November, though other homes in the village owned by non-Hare Krishna residents have not been touched. Other court cases are pending. The Kazakh authorities have failed to respond to a November 2006 offer to help from the OSCE Advisory Council on Freedom of Religion, but Gauhar Beyeseyeva of the Kazakh Foreign Ministry claimed to the head of the Hare Krishna commune: "We were denied the OSCE chairmanship specifically because of you people." Free Audio Download for Spring

Here in Jagannatha Puri tiny cashew and mango buds are beginning to blossom, their fragrance filling the atmosphere, migrating birds have returned after a brief winter, and offshore breezes carry the sound of waves rhythmically washing onto the beach.

This atmosphere inspires the Lord to perform various lilas: Dola-yatra (swing festival), Holi (throwing colors), and of course the full moon day is Gaura Purnima. Srila Rupa Gosvami's Vidagdha-madhava 1.10 describes: "Springtime had arrived, and the full moon of that season inspired the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is complete in everything, with new attraction to meet the beautiful Srimati Radharani at night to increase the beauty of Their pastimes." Please Pray for Cancer Remission

My wife Vrnda Devi is struggling against recurring skin cancer at our home in Tampa, Florida, and is considering a move to either Vrndavana or Mayapur. She wants to deal with her cancer in a dispassionate, realistic and devotional way, seeing this as an opportunity to grow and touch others around her. She is strong and brave beyond words, and is without doubt the finest person I have ever met.

Vrnda devi raised two children and is now a grandmother. She met Srila Prabhupada in London in 1971 after having followed Krsna consciousness for about two years. She is the co-author of several books about musicians, and wrote the vegetarian cookbook Compassionate Cuisine. Over the past five years our family, home and business have been in upheaval; throughout, my wife has remained a beacon and the real leader of our family. You may write to her at: vrnda@att.net.

The Dhanurdara Scandal: What Decisive Actions Were Taken?
by Hare Krsna dasi
Posted February 23, 2007

I was mystified to read the following paragraph in the minutes to Day Ten of the 2007 GBC meetings:

"The GBC body spent the rest of the morning discussing and voting on a resolution concerning the situation of Dhanudhara Swami. This discussion began yesterday in a closed plenary session, but today the GBC deputies were invited to take part. Ravindra Swarupa Prabhu chaired this session, because he was on the subcommittee working on this resolution, as were Hridayananda Maharaja, Sivarama Swami, Radhanatha Swami, Badrinarayana Prabhu, Anuttama Prabhu, and Tamohara Prabhu. The discussion continued a long time, and the GBC dealt decisively with this issue."

In this era of extreme spin and deception (also called Kali Yuga), I'm surprised that such a vague statement would be issued. Obviously, to those who are worried about the fact that such a blatent child abuser, offender of the Vaisnavas and destroyer of Srila Prabhupada's ISKCON so long maintained a position of honor in ISKCON, what matters is not that the "GBC dealt decisively with the issue," but rather exactly what kind of decisive action did they take? This is the town with the famous Pana Narasingha deity installed on a hill approached by 400 steps. There is a large fierce, toothsome face of Lord Narasingha Dev painted on one of the retaining walls, quite dramatic. Half way up the hill side there is a kutir with the footprints of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who visited here 500 years ago. The footprints were installed by Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati in 1930.

In this temple visitors purchase a ticket for a pot of jaggery, sweet water with cardamon and pepper, to be offered through a brass mask of Narasingha placed over a hole in the mountain. (Click here for the full article)

Kirtan in America

The new American Kirtan movement is alive and growing. If you don't believe me, just google "kirtan;" I did and got 598,000 hits in .07 seconds. For me this is exciting. It would be even more exciting if the chanters were Personalists.

I started participating in the Hare Krishna Kirtan movement in the early 1970s. The chanting profoundly changed my life and I've been an advocate of the benefits of kirtan ever since. As a songwriter born in the U.S. I naturally write about my unique American experience which includes kirtan. For the last three years, my wife, Yamini, and I toured all over the U.S. as the musical duo AverageSoul. We took the opportunity to drop in on many of the Hare Krishna Temples along the way. I was sad to find that despite America's growing interest in kirtan, I saw no wave of new faces coming to chant. (Click here for the full article)

The day's agenda: Straw voting and a BBT presentation about the editing of Srila Prabhupada's books.

The GBC Conference Room is decorated with artwork made by the school children in Mayapur: papier-mache faces of Lord Nrsimhadeva and colored drawings of Lord Jagannatha performing various imaginary activities (e.g., riding on the back of a dolphin, flying a private jet, and driving a convertible sports car into Puri).

Bhaktivaibhava Swami (GBC chairman) began the meeting by advising the GBC members that they need to direct their comments and discussions more carefully in order to be more effective as a body. Offering an example, he said that during a discussion of a proposal, if a member withholds criticism until the last minute before a vote, this undermines the GBC's ability to build on constructive criticism or can obstruct progress. 'Sriji' = Sri Galima
by Names Withheld
Posted February 1, 2007

Please note that your latest advertisement titled "Wanted: Devotees to Sell Krishna Art" from Sriji Das is actually from Sri Galima Das, notorious child molester from New Vrindavan. Sri Galima (Gary Gardner) recently changed his name to Sriji and has a church (temple) registered in Austin, Texas.

I would request you to please remove his advertisement until you can verify the history of Sri Galima in New Vrindavan.

[Editor's note: Thanks to the many readers who brought this to our attention. Chakra receives numerous ads and we have no way of confirming the identities of the authors. Therefore we rely on feedback from readers. We have removed the ad in question]

Juicy Discussions On Day Ten
by Niscala Dasi
Posted February 27, 2007

Hare Krsna Dasi's article "The Dhanurdhara Scandal- What Decisive Actions were Taken?" reflects the frustration of us all with the lack of communications from the GBC on topics that are vitally important, in this case how we deal with perpetrators of child abuse. Our movement will never have the integrity it needs to have and to hold on to people with higher virtues, when truth, transparency, human decency and compassion are constantly compromised within the leadership.

That is why the question raised on Day 9 of the meetings is so imperative- whether the GBC authority is spiritual or managerial? This essential question of whether the GBC is following Srila Prabhupada's direction to introduce varnasrama, thus separating the managerial from the spiritual authority, is the pivot on whether other issues will *ever* be taken seriously. Vaishnavanam Yatha Sambhu
by Caru Das
Posted February 25, 2007

Shiva Ratri is always a well attended event and this year was no exception. I estimate 600 people came and went during the three hour festivities. There was an mix of 30 per cent Indians and 70 per cent Westerners. I noticed not only Western college age kids, but maybe ten per cent of the audience older grandparents age, many of whom stayed the whole time.

Attendance was aided by a Saturday morning article in the Salt Lake Tribune, printed under "News Articles" on our web site.

Jai Krishna, Pragna and her friends did a great job on the chanting which varied between "Om Namo Shivaya" and "Hare Krishna." (Click here for the full article)

New Vrindavana Prison Preaching

Posted February 24, 2007

Photo: Mukta prabhu in his book distribution and prison preaching office.

The New Vrndavana prison ministry program is successful and dynamic. Headed by Mukta Kesa das, a Prabhupada disciple, this ministry mails out 500 of Srila Prabhupada's books every month to various prison inmates. There are over 1,600 interested prisoners in the ministry's database. It guides and encourages hundreds of inmates with personal letters. Inmates eagerly study their choice of 12 different sastra courses and respond in essay form, taking weekly quizzes on several of Srila Prabhupada's books.

Prison is a dungeon of concrete and steel for those who are convicted of misdeeds. (Click here for the full article)

Photo 1: Winning the District flag.

I'm 11 years old and belong to Boy Scout Troop 411, also known as the Hare Krishna Boy Scout Troop. Our troop is located in Prabhupada Village, North Carolina. There are ten scouts in our troop: Ramananada, Narada, Murari, Vrindavana, Janardan, Abhay, Vishvambhara, Gopal, Govinda and me.

Some of the skills our troop learns are first aid, citizenship, how to plan and organize a camp-out, how to set up a campsite and how to cook prasadam. Scouts must learn some of these things and more to get the rank position of an Eagle scout or to earn recognition such as bronze, gold and silver palm awards. (Click here for the full article)

Day Nine of the G.B.C. Meetings
reporting: Tattvavit (das) ACBSP (BBT)
Posted February 19, 2007

Tuesday, February 13, 2007

Today's Agenda: Open Forum, Sannyasa Ministry, Voting, and a closed discussion.

Open Forum

Praghosa Prabhu explained that during the Open Forum the GBC hears from devotees invited to present their concerns. That they can directly address the GBC body on any variety of concerns that are on their mind is the main consideration. The GBC does not necessarily respond to each presentation.

Bhanu Swami chaired the Open Forum and began with a letter from Jiva Tattva Prabhu (Spain), who asked why ISKCON does not have a varnasrama social system and whether the GBC's role is spiritual or managerial. (Click here for the full article)

Wheat Flour Traces in Buckwheat Flour
by Preeti dasi
Posted February 16, 2007

This information is for those devotees living in Europe and USA who buy buckwheat flour from health food stores for ekadasi day.

We recently found out that for grinding buckwheat they use the same grinding machines as for other grains like wheat, dinkel (spelt) or rye, etc. When we talked to store owners regarding it they said that they do not intentionally mix anything while grinding buckwheat but it still may contain traces from other grains. That means buckwheat flour purchased from these supermarkets is not, in my opinion, fit for consumption on the day of ekadasi.

What can be done is to purchase whole buckwheat and grind it yourself at your home. Kindly take this into consideration.

The main agenda item for the next three days is planning ISKCON's future. If you have a vague idea of what strategic planning is, you will better understand it after reading this report. At the morning session today, the GBC discussed strategic planning for two and a half hours. Gopala Bhatta Prabhu enthusiastically facilitated the discussion and helped the GBC members open their hearts and focus on the issues.

Here is a short summary: The GBC members discussed the meaning of strategic planning for the GBC and ISKCON; they discussed two strategic plans formerly endorsed by the GBC: the Srila Prabhupada Centennial and the GBC "ksetra" committees; (Click here for the full article)

Images of Srila Prabhupada Wanted
by Karalapati dasi (ACBSP)
Posted February 8, 2007

I am appealing on behalf of the Gaudiya Vaisnava Publications (GVP) for images you may have in your care of Srila Prabhupada, A.C. Bhaktivedenta Swami. I have agreed to help with this project because I believe in the importance of the undertaking. The GVP is especially looking for negatives and photographs not printed or copyright protected by the Bhaktivedenta Book Trust. We are thinking that there must be amazing images in the private archives of individuals, gathering dust, forgotten, and not appreciated. Years down the road these images will be priceless. They are in fact already priceless and they need to be digitized and preserved for posterity before they degrade over time. It would be a wonderful service to make them available for others to view and to appreciate the many relationships and moods of our Srila Prabhupada. (Click here for the full article)
