Teaching Opportunity FFL, Vrindavan
by Deena das
Posted December 29, 2010

Help the poorest children in Vrindavana to learn about Krishna and get a good education. With a good education they can serve the dhama better as adults and help restore the spiritual culture of Vrindavana.

Depending on your visa type, Food for Life Vrindavana can provide either room and board or a modest salary. We need people who can speak reasonably good English and who live in Vrindavana. It is best if you have teaching experience and training is given for those without experience.

Wishing You a Merry Krishnas
by Niscala dasi
Posted December 24, 2010

It struck me the other day the astonishing similarity between the words Christmas and Krishna- Prabhupada once pointed out the similarity between the words Christ and Krishna, but when “mas” is added, and the “i” is shortened, the similarity becomes much stronger- one could even say to someone “krsnas tu bhagavan swayam” and they might respond “What was that about Christmas?”

We all know the magic and enchantment that the word “Christmas” had over us when we were young, as we knew that from this word, everything of our hearts’ desire would be manifest, and as we chanted the word, we would long for Christmas to come. It is not all that different when we chant the name of Krishna- from Him alone, all the gifts in the world are given. Like the personality of Christmas, Santa Claus, there is the personality of Krishna, who through mystic potency or magic, makes gifts for all the children of the world (such as rain, sunshine, fresh air, potent seed grains, (Click here for the full article)

Paul Ignozza (Prahlad Nrsimha) Departs
by Sankarsana das
Posted December 23, 2010

Paul Ignozza (recently initiated as Prahlad Nrsimha das by Hanumat Presaka Swami) passed away from this world at the age of 61 on December 11 shortly after 1 pm in a hospice in Port Charlotte, Florida. He suffered a long debilitating illness of squamous skin cancer which was very painful the last year of his life. He was an active member of the Miami temple for many years and served at other Florida temples as well. On December 9 and 10 Siddhavidya prabhu and me visited Prahlad Nrsimha. He was lying motionless on a recliner bed in a spacious room in the hospice. His body and face were emaciated and he appeared to be in an almost comatose condition. Half of his head was wrapped with a bandage to contain open sores and his exposed eye was shut tight. When we entered his room we announced ourselves and told him we brought him a garland from Radha-Vrajabihari and caranamrta from the Miami temple. (Click here for the full article)

A heartfelt thank you to all the devotees who gave such nice donations! We now have all the instruments we need to have some rip roaring kirtans and some sweet melodious bhajans for Krsna and Radharani's supreme pleasure! We are almost finished setting up our new center here in Flagstaff, AZ. Things are looking really transcendental. Will have some pictures available this weekend! We have received nice donations including an altar, small deities, a beautiful harmonium, decorations, and many other nice items.

If you would like to help out in any way shape or form, here is a list of our final needs to open our doors and run the type of programs that would greatly resonate with the university students, all of these things are greatly appreciated in a used state or new if you are so willing. Facilitating the Voice of Softer Conscience
by Niscala dasi
Posted December 11, 2010

I would like to thank and applaud Sri Nandanandana prabhu for his vital and relevant message in regard to our lack of facility for women. Maybe part of that reluctance to provide facility is due to seeing women as sense objects to be avoided, ignoring the fact that they are inherently an important and irreplaceable part of ISKCON. They provide the motherly aspect, the softer, caring side that is so necessary for devotees to remain loyal and committed in the long-term. Archetypically at least, they are forgiving, as exemplified by Draupadi, who pardoned the murderer of her own children… in contradiction to Bhima, who only wanted to enact justice. In that pastime, Krsna indicated to Arjuna to do something to satisfy both the feminine tendency to forgive, and the masculine tendency to enact unforgiving justice. Kulimela 2009: Main Video Released On YouTube
by Kuli Mela Association
Posted December 7, 2010

Click Here to watch the much anticipated internet release of the main video from the KulimeLA 2009 festival.

2009 marked the 20th Anniversary of the Los Angeles Gurukuli Reunion, an annual gathering of second-generation Hare Krishnas, known informally as Gurukulis, or Kulis.

The main theme for KulimeLA 2009 was to “Honor the Past, Celebrate the Present & Envision the Future.”

Throughout this five-day festival, over one thousand Vaishnavas from around the world came together to share an amazing cultural experience – called KulimeLA – to share, reflect, and appreciate what the Gurukulis have accomplished over the past 20 years.

This 40 minute film offers an overview of the entire festival, including highlights from the performances at the Gala Evening at the Ford Theater, (Click here for the full article)

Where Are the Women's Ashramas?
by Sri Nandanandana das
Posted December 5, 2010

Sometimes there is talk on how the women devotees in ISKCON should be treated, and even the possibility of promoting them into leadership positions in the movement. But that would seem to be a rarity when ISKCON hardly provides any facility for women anyway.

Why? Look around and tell me how many temples even offer a place for women. There are so many temples across America, and especially in India, that offer no place for women, no ashramas, little if any facilities, and in some places, little if any service. And women are supposed to be comfortable in joining such an organization? Maybe they can participate from a distance, like from their homes if they are married, but we hardly ever find any brahmacarinis like there used to be in the past.

Let's face a few facts: (Click here for the full article)

Faith - Part 1
by Niscala dasi
Posted December 3, 2010

The case of demonic possession

We say that Krsna consciousness is a science, but it is certainly a faith as well, as is what we call science… Scientists believe that the atom is composed of neutrons, protons and electrons, not because they have seen it, but because that model supports the data and allows for a predictable interpretation of it. If they did not have that faith, and always doubted that the data could be interpreted by using another model, then they would be always at square one, instead of finding ways that the science can be used in the service of humanity, as many scientists do now. Considering this, it appears that both scientists and believers are counted in the ranks of the faithful. What we call religion and science is not about faith or lack of it, but how one directs one’s faith according to one’s desire- either to disprove God, Spirits, and Angels, or to prove them… or neither. It is again the festive season and a time for reflection, for giving, and for gratitude for what we have. This is the time when FFLV starts our marathon preparation for the New Year Gift Festival. This Gift Festival is in its 14th year! Since the beginning, thousands of very poor children have been receiving gifts of items on the first of January. These presents come in a gift bag and are things that most of these children would otherwise never have a chance to have and enjoy. Last year we distributed 4,000 gift packs, and that was despite the fact that it was a very difficult year financially for everyone. This year, with the help of you and your friends, we hope we can do a bit better.

Please visit our power point slide show that shows the wonderful process and results of this annual giving. www.fflvrindavan.org/NYGF2011 Please share this with your friends and relatives. New Vrindavan Community Leadership Service Opportunity
by Gopisa dasa, New Vrindhavan Board of Directors, Chairperson
Posted December 7, 2010

Iskcon New Vrindavan has begun a search for candidates interested in applying for leadership positions in the United States. New Vrindavan, ISKCON’s old community and largest pilgrimage site in North America, is entering a new phase in operations and has opportunities for career services.

Due to the sheer size, diverse projects and responsibilities required, NV has executive level leadership positions available. The positions require solid sadhana and administration skills. In addition to being a highly recognized Krishna temple and cow sanctuary, the community resembles a village. Strong spiritual leaders are required as well as chief administrators who can handle the governmental/corporate flavor of community management.

Temple president and CEO services

While the community progresses in this transitional period, the board of directors have created an initial outline of service, responsibilities and structure. (Click here for the full article)

A Hare Krsna From the Hindu Tribe
by ISKCON Prison Ministry
Posted December 22, 2010

The brhat mrdanga continues to resound very loudly in all the jails and prisons through IPM (ISKCON Prison Ministry) and many hear and respond to Lord Caitanya's call, as the quotes below illustrate.

Before proceeding, here are two service opportunities you may want to take up:

1) We are looking for devotees to visit bhakta inmates in various prisons around USA. For example, a bhakta just wrote from Coyote Ridge Correction Center in Connell, Washington, asking for a volunteer to give KC presentations. We need volunteers in every state!

2) IPM desperately need a legal department to help bhaktas with their vegetarian diets or their right to practice KC. Some prisons are grossly violating inmates' rights to practice their religion and until we have the support of attorneys, IPM can't help in this regard. If you are an attorney and find it in your heart to give some of your time, please contact IPM. Thank you!

New Kirtan CD
by Arundhati devi, disciple of Srila Prabhupada
Posted December 7, 2010

This is an announcement to let you know I have just released a beautiful kirtan cd called RADHA-KRISHNA JOURNEY OF LOVE. Decades back in the 70s, I was fortunate to be able to lead kirtan for a number of years in Vrndavana at the start of the 24 hour kirtan there. A blissful recording from that time went around, but the quality was not too good. Over the years, many devotees have asked me when I would make an album, and I am happy to say that this endeavor has now been realized, by the grace of guru and Krsna. I am eager to continue to take part in Lord Caitanya’s movement and spread the Holy Names around, in temples, yoga studios and wherever the opportunity arises. I believe having this CD will help to accomplish that. The CD is dedicated to His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada. May you feel his presence and be inspired and uplifted through these chants.
