But have we already dedicated one week completely to the Holy Name? We do so many activities in this world, but why have we so little time for the essence of all existence?

If you want a real spiritual adventure then come to our japa-retreat in our Alp Ashram in the swiss mountains. ( www.sanatan-dharma.ch ). In a completely peaceful area - no noise and disturbances!

Not Really a Suggestion, But . . .
by Bhakta Raj Prabhu das
Posted December 19, 2006

Please accept my humble obeisances and well-wishes. I'm a 63-year old devotee/part aging-hippy, and I guess some of the "60ish" things are still ingrained in my delivery! The only "suggestion" I might have is to just "keep on keeping on" with this wonderful website; devotees absolutely are in need of a forum where ideas may be exchanged without fear of "being misunderstood" (translation: offending another devotee).

Krishna! That's been one of the issues that's plagued our movement almost from its inception . . . everybody was afraid to offend everybody! And, of course, the higher up the food-chain one went - the more we vaishnavas who dilligently applied ourselves to whatever task we performed at whatever level we performed it had to be "on our P's 'n Q's" lest we commit some unintended "offense". Sometimes good ideas come but don't go anywhere. But this idea of having all 130 students in the primary school section of Bhaktivedanta Gurukula and International School hand write the complete Bhagavad-gita stayed and worked.

The project began three days before Dec 1st, Gita Jayanti and the children worked diligently write each sloka in both Sanskrit and English. They took special care to write neatly and add a decorative boarder to each card. The cards were then hung and displayed as the backdrop for the evening Gita recitation. Looking for Hatha Yoga School in South India
by Bhakta Shane

Just wanted to find out if anyone knows of any good Hatha Yoga Schools or hospitals etc in South India. Preferably with Yoga Teacher or Ayurvedic Dr who has abilities to do Ayurvedic pulse readings as well as Yoga and thus able to precribe certain appropriate yoga asanas according to certain health conditions.

Also preferably some place which doesnt expound to much in the way of Mayavada philosophy or doesn't incorporate heavy mayavada teachings there as part of the overall course structure. Looking for place that runs 1 mth or 3 mth courses in Yoga discipline rather than philosohy.

Would appreciate if anyone has some info in this regard thanks. Please send replies c/o chakraletters@gmail.com.

Letter to the Prison Ministry
by Janardana dasa
Posted December 27, 2006

I met you at the mangalartika in Chicago earlier this week and I was very excited about your involvement in this Prison ministry.

I was a self-styled outlaw as a youth and youthful adult, and spent a total of 8 years in prisons across the US. I was exposed to this Krishna consciousness movement as a 16 year old back when the Chicago temple was in Evanston, IL, but rather than surrender I chose a life of anger, material-manias, and ultimately crime.

During my years of crime, I always knew I should chant Hare Krsna, and often would visit temples, even staying in some for a week here or there, but could not surrender... (Click here for the full article)

A project that intimidated us since 2001, was conceptualized by Vaibhavi in 2005, physically begun in May of 2006, was just this day (Dec. 22) completed.

The main dome of the temple room was built back in 1999 by a company from Idaho Falls, called "Dome Technologies". They claimed to have vast experience building dome structures in the Middle East. I think the domes came in quite handy as well in Idaho for storing potatoes.

Two fellows came down from Idaho, spent a couple of days fixing pylons into the ground, arranged skirting, double compression doors, and then with a compressor blew up the shape of the 27 foot wide 18 foot high dome from a vinyl air form. (Click here for the full article)

Listen Up, New Charity Album

SCHOOL of BRAJA is a remarkable and exciting new charity album. A 64-page booklet and music CD in one, making a charming & affordable gift. Classical bhajans, kirtan, and Braj folk songs meld into a kaleidoscope of instruments, colors and sounds, as students from our very own Badger school perform alongside musicians like Kula Shaker, Chrissie Hynde, and DJ producer Mark Pritchard. Whilst the album is a celebration of youth and devotional culture, the accompanying booklet is a work of art unto itself. Featuring many beautiful color pictures and an easy to read introduction to Sacred Sound, the booklet has all lyrics translations and purports to songs by Srila B.V Narayana Goswami Maharaja himself, as well as a beautiful short essay by Srila Bhaktivinode Thakura. Surviving And Preaching in a Post-oil World
by Jagatkarta das
Posted December 15, 2006

The recent events in Kazakhstan are a wake up call for devotees everywhere. I live in the US, which has a history of religious tolerance and respect for human rights, but in recent years, since 9/11/01 to be specific, there has been a systematic attempt by this federal government to dismantle basic civil rights even here. When you examine the contents of the Patriot Acts, the Military Commissions Act and several other similar laws that have been passed since 9/11/01, it becomes evident that the complete legal framework now exists to support a state of martial law. The discretion to declare martial law rests entirely in the hands of one man, the president. The Supreme Court or Congress cannot intervene or review the situation for at least 6 months. Krishna Can Maintain Everyone
by Anandamaya das
Posted December 7, 2006

In response to Ananda das's article, Some Home Truths About Birth Control, I agree with much of what he says, but I would like to put forth a few additional ideas. A half-feral cat showed up at our door 8-1/2 years ago, apparently abandoned, and we began feeding him.Now that he is older and has mellowed out a bit through the aging process and the hearing of Harinam in our house, he wants to stay inside more and more, especially in winter, but he refuses to use the cat box, so we put him out to go to toilet. He also gets some food and occasional shelter from at least one other householder in the neighborhood. I strive to keep him as a pet without getting overly attached. Cats in general set the example of a miser perfectly, and he is no exception, but he is gradually responding to our overtures of kindness. (Click here for the full article)

Hare Krishna movement to offer guidance to 240 primary pupils in Harrow

Sunday December 24, 2006

Britain's first state-funded school for Hindus, which will receive guidance from the Hare Krishna movement, is to get the go ahead, backed by almost 10m of taxpayers' money. The news is seen as a major cultural breakthrough by Britain's 600,000-strong Hindu community which has long campaigned for state-funded schools for its followers. But it has also attracted criticism from secular groups who claim that religion and education do not mix. The Krishna-Avanti school, which will be advised by Iskcon - the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, better known as the Hare Krishna movement - will be based in Harrow, north-west London. A planning application will be submitted to the local council next month and the school is expected to open in September 2008.

Vaibhavi could not come as she is on a marathon to finish the decorations of the interior dome of the temple room. Recently, she has been spending about 10 hours a day on 30 foot high scaffolding.

U.S. Urges Kazakhs To Stop Harassing Hare Krishna

by Kazakhstan Today, AP
Posted December 12, 2006

December 7, 2006 -- The United States has urged Kazakh authorities to end what it describes as an "aggressive" campaign against Hare Krishna followers.

The call is contained in a statement released today by the U.S. Embassy in Astana.

The statement questions the legal basis of a Kazakh court ruling ordering the destruction of the Sri Vrindavan Dham, a sprawling farming commune near Almaty.

Sri Vrindavan Dham is the only Hare Krishna commune in the CIS.

Kazakh police on November 21 began to bulldoze the residential buildings and other property of Hare Krishna followers. (Click here for the full article)

Bringing Krsna to Work
by Atmavana dasi, Santa Cruz, CA
Posted December 11, 2006

Recently, after hearing during a recent class from the LA Temple, that one shouldn't think he could bring Krsna Consciousness to the work place and expect people there not to influence the devotee, it got me thinking so I am writing this today. I understand the speakers' intention was to not fool oneself into thinking one can expect oneself to remain strong in one's sadhana while associating with people outside the temple. For those who feel strongly in this regard, your point can not truly be disputed. As devotees we all know there's no place like Vaikuntha here on earth, in other words, the temple. We would all love to be in the most fortunate of circumstances, yet for some of us that can not always be possible. (Click here for the full article)

Update On the Temporary Vrndavan Hospice
by Yadunandana Pada Dasa
Posted December 7, 2006

Upon our request, we have received a number of offers to take over the temporary hospice fund and we are in the process of interviewing some known fair minded, pro active and honest individuals. The Temporary Hospice will remain a branch of VRNDA (the Vaishnavi Retirement and Development Association www.vrnda.org). The last update from the Permanent hospice in Vrndavan founded by Giriraja Maharaja is that construction has begun and will be completed within a year. We continue to thank those of you who have been giving every month for the last year and a half, as you have helped so many devotees in need, in Vrndavan (and elsewhere). Spaying And Neutering Animals
by Name withheld
Posted December 5, 2006

In Response to Kylie Dicks request for input concerning Spaying and Neutering Animals, I offer this staggering statistic. In the metro nine county area where I live with less than 300,000 human population, the local shelters publish their intake/adoption/euthanized statistics each month in a periodical filled with photos of adoptable animals. Their monthly average of the animals euthanized in over 72 per cent of the animals brought to them for possible adoptions. Over 72%! Personally, I am a soul on my journey through the material world at this point in Kali Yuga who has rescued cat- and dog-bodied souls, and is steward to two rescue cat-souls who live indoors only. Kazakhstan Government Showcases Religious Harmony

submitted by Hare Krsna dasi
Posted December 4, 2006

(Devotees who have been shocked and outraged by recent accounts that the Kazakhstan government destroyed 13 houses of Hare Krsna devotees in Almaty may note with irony that the Kazakhstan government considers itself a leader in the matter of world religious harmony. One can only wonder where it believes the followers of Lord Krsna and the Bhagavad-gita should fit into its lofty visions of interfaith harmony? The Kazakhstan government paid for a half-page advertisement in the New York Times (Mon, Nov 27, p. A9) entitled "Kazakhstan: Global Dialogue for Humanity." Readers should send any comments to the editor of the New York Times letters@nytimes.com OSCE info@osce.org and the Kazakhstan Ministry of Culture and Information pr@mininfo.ktelco.kz as well as Chakra. ) (Click here for the full article)

Dome Story
by Caru Das
Posted December 2, 2006

At the beginning of 2006 Vaibhavi vowed the interior decoration of the 33 thousand pound dome over the temple room would be completed by year's end. Though the temple opened more than five years ago, June 23, 2001, she put off this project until there was a clear conception of how to do it.

The dome of the original building, Kusum Sarovar in Braja Bhumi, after which our temple was modeled, still shows the results of intricate hand painting 500 years ago. Would Vaibhavi have to lie on her back on a high scaffold for years, like Michaelangelo, painting by hand the vast surface? (Click here for the full article)

Moscow Krishna Temple Emergency, Urgent Help
by Kirtiraja dasa, ISKCON Moscow
Posted December 2, 2006

In the last 15 years devotees all over Russia have begun actively building their congregations and a Krishna conscious environment for their children. But now their hopes are threatened and they need our help. Please listen to their story.

In 1993, several years after the fall of the Soviet Union, the Hare Krishna movement was bursting at the seams. Looking for a place to begin developing a community, one of the stalwart devotees from the communist era, Vidura prabhu, found a former summer camp called "Cosmos", which was available for rent. The place was given a new name "Sukharevo" after the nearest village, and the first Krishna conscious community in Russia was born. (Click here for the full article)
