ISKCON needs loving and honest relationships
by Kevin Maistry
Posted December 19, 2004

I am a newly married man (into the 4th year), who certainly is experiencing the challenge of grhastha life. Marriage has its struggles, and there are many times when both husband and wife tend to think the worst of the situation. (For any Brahmacaris reading this article, think carefully about your ashram; on both sides there are challenges). If not handled correctly, this will regenerate (the laws of karma) or regress into a pit of abuse, etc. It is certainly sad when the relationship takes the latter course — this highlights our lack of Krishna consciousness; for the former, the chance will again come to rectify and move on (one hopes in this life). Service and obedience to the right person
by Niscala dasi
Posted December 17, 2004

In regard to Yasomati- stanya-payi prabhu's article on the virtues of obedience to the husband, I felt it necessary to add that while obedience is a virtue, so it is to think for oneself. Both are virtues, and vaisnava behaviour is a careful balance of the two, at times choosing one over the other, as appropriate for the service of Mukunda. (Click here for the full article)

Neglecting family is not service to Krsna
by Lilamanjari dasi
Posted December 16, 2004

I take exception to Yasomati- stanya-payi dasi's statement, "The life of a woman in Krishna consciousness in not easy." First, if we follow Prabhupada's instructions and his example, Krishna consciousness is easy, for anyone. It is we, in our mundane interpretations of what "Prabhupada said" and "what Prabhupada meant", who make our endeavors hard, convoluted and full of misery. (Click here for the full article)

Healthy married relationships needed
by Isani dasi
Posted December 15, 2004

Having just read the article by Yasomati- stanya-payi dasi, I would just like to say that I hope all the intelligent men and women who read this kind of thing understand that the relationship between Rambhoru and Prthu cannot by any stretch of the imagination be held up as a good example to be followed by anyone aspiring for a good, functional Krsna conscious marriage. Prthu abused his privileges as temple president, GBC and guru, while subjecting his wife to humiliation, abuse and neglect. (Click here for the full article)

Whose Mission?
by Premanidhi das
Posted December 11, 2004

Dandavats. I would like to say something about a subject that appears time after time. We have seen many good but also unfortunate activities of devotees in the name of ISKCON, or other Gaudiya Vaishnava groups etc. Through those activities the names of great Acharyas and/or missions were affected. I think it should be normal for everyone to be responsible for their own deeds, both as an Acharya and a devotee. But if we use the previous spiritual master as a front man, we don't act honestly. If we had been responsible for our own actions, the image for an example of ISKCON hadn't been affected in such a negative way. (Click here for the full article)

Vaishnava-Dharma Is Very Liberal
by Amara dasa
Posted December 9, 2004

There are two types of dharma or religion described by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura in his book Jaiva Dharma. One is "naimittika-dharma," or religious practices that are circumstantial and temporary by nature (varnashrama-dharma falls within this category), and the second is "sanatana-dharma" or religious practices that are eternal and based upon the soul. This second type of dharma, known also as "vaishnava-dharma" or "jaiva-dharma," relates directly to the nature of every soul as an eternal servant of Krsna. (Click here for the full article)

Response to VNN Guru-tattva article
by Rocana das
Posted December 3, 2004

Over the course of the last few years, the editors of VNN.org have refused to post six different articles that I have submitted to them for publication. This pattern is a particularly obvious one, given the fact that between 1996 and 2000, VNN published at least 20 of my articles and never declined to print anything I submitted to them. Having asked for an explanation from VNN but never receiving one, I can only speculate on the reasons for their editorial position. It appears to me that their unexplained change of policy regarding my writings is due the fact that I have increasingly focused on the issues surrounding Srila Prabhupada's elevated status, particularly in relationship to his Godbrothers in the Gaudiya Matha. I married a gay devotee
by Iccha dhari d.d.
Posted December 22, 2004

I would like to thank HH Hridayananda Maharaja for his objective, human and caring view on gay devotees in our movement. But what will happen next? I can imagine that many of his godbrothers do not agree with it and will criticise him for making such comments. How unfortunate. I am just patiently waiting for the time when we start to care for each other on the human level and when this policy about gay devotees will be clear once and for all -- they have the right to be in the same relationships as heterosexual devotees. They have the same need for affection, love, care and partnership. (Click here for the full article)

Dangerous glory

Protection of women in ISKCON

"Only the Pure Devotees . . ."
Who can Adapt Vaishnavism to Modern Times?

by Nila Madhava das
Posted December 3, 2004

We have often heard the argument that we cannot do things that our predecessor acaryas have done because they were 'pure devotees' (and we are not). I believe that this one point is a major misunderstanding many Vaishnavas have and thus this point could be one of the biggest stumbling blocks to the progress of Vaishnavism (whether that be via ISKCON or some other Vaishnava group). Since my participation has been primarily within ISKCON, that is where I have seen this 'pure devotee' card played. I don't know how much or if other Vaishnava groups suffer from this misunderstanding. I hope that they do not. (Click here for the full article)

Prabhupada Relics List
by Dhanistha dasi
Posted December 30, 2004

Dear friends,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
Hare Krishna, all glories to Srila Prabhupada.

For the last 12 years I been collecting and caring for many precious relics of Srila Prabhupada and in the year 2000 built a small temple and museum for their worship here in Southern Illinois in a reclusive woodland setting. I have made efforts with this acreage, ashram, and temple to present Krishna consciousness in a simple manner. At this time in my life, however, this somewhat remote midwestern region is no longer proving fully conducive for my personal needs and especially not for ongoing financial stability. Therefore, I have decided to relocate very soon. (Click here for the full article)

Gay monogamy preferred to promiscuity
by Hridayananda das Goswami
Posted December 19, 2004

In a recent essay appearing on Chakra, "Vaisnava Dharma is very liberal", Amara prabhu raises the following question:

Gay marriage is . . . taken to be outside of the rigid varnasrama system and the ordinary prescription for married life, but suppose it is found to be the best practical arrangement to sustain a person's bhakti, someone who is exclusively homosexual and unable to follow complete celibacy. Can an exception be made to the general rule in the spirit of encouraging bhakti, as cited above, or should we give more importance to the rigid codes of ordinary dharma?

In response to Yasomati-stanya Payi dasi's article
by Manu das
Posted December 18, 2004

With all due respect to Yasomati-stanya Payi's article, I must say that I am apalled to read such an article. It is this very lack of understanding of what it means to be a servant that encourages and condones the mistreatment of women in ISKCON. Mataji, I would ask you to reconsider your position and understand the gravity of what you say. In modern psychology, this is what one would call rationalization, an unacceptable excusing of incorrect conduct (often due to a lack of self-esteem) on the grounds of it being "devotional" . There is a fine line between servitude and exploitation, I feel that this is an insult to Srimati Rambhoru Devi Dasi and the hardships that she has endured. (Click here for the full article)

But this left me completely speechless and stunned. It is mindblowing that someone even considered neglect and abuse to be a means for spiritual advancement! Has society come this far to consider the treatment mother Rambhoru underwent normal or even beneficial? I hope the husbands in Iskcon arent going to see this as approval and think they can treat their wifes like this too, assuming that it elevates her to a glorious position.
