Response to Honey or Vinegar
by Vamsee Krishna
Posted August 31, 2008

Gaurav, I am sorry for the experience you had.

ISKCON folks (particularly those who were not raised in India) should understand that in most Indian families, the Lord is being worshipped for many generations. That some ISKCON people stay in the temple or get initiated, does not mean that they have the cultural component associated with Indians. So be cautious when you handle people from India.

Honey or Vinegar - a Comment
by Bhakta Raj Prabhu das
Posted August 28, 2008

I'd like to comment on the article, "Honey or Vinegar - How Do We Treat Our Guests?", written by Gaurav Duggal on August 17th.

I've been a devotee - albeit, not a perfect one - since the early 70's, and although I make no claim to sainthood, I was raised by good, decent parents, and they gave me a basic concept of the difference between right and wrong behavior. That having been said, the conduct of the devotees in whatever temple Gaurav had visited was really uncalled for. (Click here for the full article)

Honey or Vinegar - How Do We Treat Our Guests?
by Gaurav Duggal
Posted August 17, 2008

For the last three days, I had the opportunity to visit a small ISKCON temple for the morning darshan-arati at 7:30 a.m. I have utmost reverence for the Lord and pray regularly and sincerely. I had been quite excited to participate. Afterwards, two prabhus very lovingly asked me to participate in prasadam, which is served after arati at 8:00 a.m.

On the second day I had mentioned to a temple devotee that I would be off work for two weeks until August 28 and that I would like to attend the morning arati as regularly as I could. I asked another prabhu at the temple if I could be of any service, but he told me: "Not yet." (Click here for the full article)

Renovation Work Needed

I am looking for workers who are capable to renovate an old timbered house close to Heidelberg, Germany. I prefer devotees but would also be glad if you could recommend a company or workers from an east euorpean country. I heard that especially in Poland there are many experts for timbered houses. Ideal would be a group of workers who know each other and who are specialized in different fields of renovation. The most difficult part of the different kinds of works that have to be done is the restauration of a ceiling: (Click here for the full article)

Vedic Society And the Third Gender
by Navanitacora das
Posted August 15, 2008

The Vedic literature is supreme, and unsurprisingly it it offers a very deep understanding of gender categories and sexual orientation. A verse from the Srimad Bhagavatam states that there are three states of gender identity: female, male and "none of both" (nobhayam), which Srila Prabhupada translated as "neutral eunuch."

maya hy esa maya srista
yat pumamsam striyam satim
manyase nobhayam yad vai
hamsau pasyavayor gatim

"Sometimes you think yourself a man, sometimes a chaste woman and sometimes a neutral eunuch. This is all because of the body, which is created by the illusory energy. This illusory energy is My potency, and actually both of us — you and I — are pure spiritual identities. (Click here for the full article)

Remembering Jahnavi Prabhu
by Krisna Avatara das

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Jahnavi prabhu. As a founding director of Children of Krishna, she was a tireless advocate for the welfare of children. As a woman and a mother she conveyed a balance to the organization that was invaluable.

When she assumed the role of Executive Director, she brought with her certain attributes that strengthened its effectiveness. Her passion for justice and equality was inspiring. (Click here for the full article)

(May 27, 1972-August 9, 2008)

Religious movements are historical, sociological, philosophical, and hopefully, divine phenomenon. They are also the sum total of the contributions, influence and sacrifices of many men and women, both big and small.

In the history yet to be written of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, (ISKCON) many persons will be noted for their contributions, both positive and negative, to this great social enterprise. Many persons may be forgotten. I would like to offer a few words of appreciation for one young woman whose contribution should not be lost in the pages of time. She is the stuff great societies are made of. (Click here for the full article)

'Mataji' Must Never Mean Contempt
by Stritama dasi (Hawaii)
Posted August 5, 2008

Hypocrisy and misogyny are alive and well at this year's Kuli Mela just concluded at Radhadesh in Belgium. The misogyny from the first generation has been passed down to the second and third generations. I ask: when will it end?

My daughter, an excellent football (soccer) player, having played since she was 7 years old, was literally run off the field by her 'godbrothers' at the Kuli Mela, all the while being called 'mataji'. What hypocrisy! Who would treat their mother in this manner?

To avoid completely falling on her head after having being slammed, she had grasped a young man's jersey. (Click here for the full article)

I will start tomorrow morning at 3a.m and see what it is like to chant my rounds before 6 o`clock.

Sounds funny?

Well, I am not a temple devotee. I used to be, but now I am a grhasta and very busy. I work in shifts and have practically no sadhana, which is of course not a good thing. I found out, if I chant after work or even in the evening, it is really troublesome.

So this attempt is to reastablish my chanting and really take advantage of the brahma muhurta. I will raise at 3, take a shower, and chant eight rounds (Click here for the full article)

Does anyone have a copy of the beautiful collection of bhajans called Gandharvaloka by Jayasachinandan das? We used to listen to this in the 1970s, but everyone who had a copy was ordered to destroy it, round about 1980 or so, apparently due to offences by the singer. House At Radha-Kunda
by Ananda

Devotees wishing to migrate to the most sacred corner of Braja Mandala will be happy to know of a beautiful spot and a house at Radhakund. Built in the spring of 2007, the house, with 220 square yards of land and a beautiful garden with good soil and sweet water is located a five minute walk away from the sacred ponds, near the water tanks.

The walled property is located on a walled area developed by Pal Babu, an elderly Bengali gentleman, investor and a long-time devotee. Ideal for devotees owing to strict standards on to whom the land is sold, you can expect to live in a peaceful environment full of devotees, aloof from the often chaotic local suburbs, protected by heavy three-meter walls and a high iron gate. Offering Krishna a Cord
by Vrindavan dasa
Posted August 17, 2008

Pavitraropana Dvadasi is the festival of offering Lord Krishna a garland made of threads. By doing so, one completes a year of worship, atones for deficiencies in worship, and increases purity. Just like other Ekadasis, one can be redeemed of sinful reactions by fasting and staying up on this special day.

We ordered a spool of silk cocoon filament, which we then twisted into 1x3 threads using a fan motor to speed up the process. Then again, we twisted the 1x3 strands into 3x3. After the thread was purified, we tied knots to create beautiful silk garlands for Sri Caitanya. (Click here for the full article)

The setting is simple and rural, a good place for simple living and high thinking.

At this time, we are able to offer the right devotee(s) the opportunity to serve as cook/pujari. Presently our temple crew is down to three devotees, whereas ideally there is service for five persons. (Click here for the full article)

A Helpful Tip for Vaisnavas About Japanese Miso Broth
by Vrindavan dasa
Posted August 12, 2008

Here's a helpful tip for those devotees who drink Japanese miso broth, and tips for how to cook it in such a way that is appropriate for Vaisnavas.

Miso broth keep at warm temperature for 6 or 7 hours actually starts to produce alcohol! Similar to apple juice at room temperature, and so on. However, miso broth at just under boiling, 95 degrees C, can go for 6 or 7 hours without producing any alcohol at all. Just something to remember any time you make miso broth in the future. Important to bring the water to a full boil, 100 degrees C, before you add the miso and then don't leave it sitting at too low a temperature for too long. (Click here for the full article)

Former Leader of Children of Krishna Passes Away

Jahnavi was a Krishna devotee from the age of 4, when her parents joined the Hare Krishna movement's western world headquarters in Los Angeles, California. Women Were Instrumental in Kuli Mela
by Kapila Monet
Posted August 7, 2008

I would like to apologize to Stritama dasi on behalf of the organizers of Kuli Mela for the insult to her daughter in the heat of a game ("'Mataji' Must Never Mean Contempt", August 5). The other organizers and I had not been aware of this situation, nor was it brought to our attention at the time. If it had been, we would have certainly asked the boy to correct his communication.

I am grieved to see a personal insult in the heat of a game translate into a wider statement about the Kuli Mela just recently held. At the Kuli Mela, more than half the key members of the organizing team are young women, without whom the event would have been impossible — all of whom were properly respected, both as Vaishnava women and as fellow organizers. Srila Prabhupada said: "I am encouraged that he is taking interest in selling our Bhagavad-gita As It Is. You may all try to distribute this book as far as possible and it will be a great service to our movement. If any sincere person reads this book I think that he will be impressed by the solid footing on which our Krishna Consciousness is based.
