Additional Swimming Safety Tips
by Bhakta Edwin
Posted August 31, 2006

Please accept my humble respects. I thank you for posting about the dangers of swimming in the Ganges, and especially for posting the tips on river safety. I wanted to add to it a few things I have learned also - mostly just some of that all-too-rare common sense. I would like to see someone go into detail about currents, whirlpools, etc., but I do not have the knowledge to properly talk about them.

The main thing I believe is to always, ALWAYS go swimming with a SMALL group of people. (Click here for the full article)

Let the Preachers Preach
by Atmarama das
Posted August 30, 2006

In response to "Simple, But Powerful Key to Success" by Vrsabha prabhu: I could be wrong, but didn't Srila Prabhupada want sannyasis (most of whom are now gurus) to only be preaching and to be avoiding management? If I remember correctly, he even said that they were not to be on the GBC at all.

I believe that would be the simplest way to fix this problem. Let the preachers preach, and let the managers manage. If the GBC were following Srila Prabhupada's order of management as established in the '60s and then updated in the '70s, we might not be entangled in this situation in the '00s. Just my two cents.

Srimati Radharani's Beautiful Mood
by Anantacarya dasa [ACBSP 1972]
Posted August 26, 2006

An early offering for Radhastami.

Srimati Radharani, the tenderhearted, feminine counterpart of Godhead, is that one person in all of existence who knows best how to express love for Krsna. She is the supreme container of love for Him, and, as such, She is known as the asraya category. Moreover, it is She who, like a mother, nurtures us in our devotional service.

Krsna, the object of Her love, comes once in a day of Brahma to display and enjoy His pastime mellows. Afterward, however, Krsna was left with three unfulfilled desires, and to fulfill those inner longings is the paramount reason for His return as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Blessed Are They Who Always Think of Lord Sri Krishna
by Vishoka dasa
Posted August 25, 2006

I stood like a statue, thinking to myself, "I knew this would happen." My premonition bore true, as I gazed with fascination at this person who lay motionless on the bed.

Devotees entered and soon left, after looking at the man lying there. They didn't seem to notice me standing there by the headboard. They seemed to look right through me, as if I wasn't there, like I didn't exist. Some stood outside the door, looking sad, looking at the floor.

I remember when I was a kid, and the horrible realization finally hit me ... it suddenly crashed down on my head ... we all have to die, and there was no way out of it! (Click here for the full article)

Notre Dame Statue?
by Isa das
Posted August 19, 2006

This picture was used by the Dallas Temple many years ago in a preaching brochure. Recently I sent copies of that brochure to several Priests I am preaching to and they are questioning it's authenticity.

The brochure states that the statue is at the Cathedral of Notre Dame, I have written them and they say it is not there. Several devotees I have spoken with say they have seen it but have not sent me other photos and directions to it.

So I need your help. If you have any information that will help, please email me at wlg@aol.com

With the help of Mother Daivisakti Prabhu, we secured an apartment at the MVT building of the Krishna-Balarama Mandir and officially moved in on July first. We have an assortment of medical and first aid supplies from last year and have procured a blood pressure machine, painkillers, anti-nausea medicine, and adult diapers, among other things. We will soon be buying the ever needed hospital bed for which we have already gathered the needed funds by the grace of our 'Angel' monthly donors. (Click here for the full article)

Forgiveness Requires Rectification
by Nara Narayan das
Posted August 17, 2006

With regard to the article "I Beg Your Pardon" by Chaitanya Mangala prabhu, I believe that His Holiness Jayadvaita Swami's response to Nityananda Rama prabhu mixes several elements of sin and forgiveness. He does not clearly distinguish between sins committed before taking diksa and after taking diksa.

Discussions regarding "forgiveness" or "lack of forgiveness" of Dhanurdhara Swami by the Vaishnava community find Jayadvaita Swami conflating present sin with past forgiveness as he defends Dhanurdhara's elevation to the status of guru after a decade of post-diksa abuse of his young students, declaring: "Even one who performs abominable acts can be seen as saintly." This comment was singularly unpopular with Gurukulis assembled to receive "a formal apology" from the GBC. (Click here for the full article)

Srila Prabhupada began his journey from India across the Atlantic ocean on this historic day 41 years ago. We are reminded of that Atlantic Ocean by the now oceanic Candrabhaga River as she floods her banks. We remember Srila Prabhupada's sacrifice and struggle. We pray for the inner strength and courage to follow in his footsteps.

As we gaze out the window this morning we see another ocean outside of ISKCON Pandharpur. Our land has become an ocean - a wet, wild, swirling, breezy, windy ocean. (Click here for the full article)

Vaisnava Culture

Posted August 1, 2006

A critical analysis of true Vaisnava etiquette, shows that inflammatory statements, based on misinformation or lack of information, and trying to ridicule others and the like, are practices outside the actual gentle and authoritative ways of discussion in Vaisnava culture.

In Vaisnava culture, discussion must be gentle and authoritative based on guru sadhu and sastra. The exponent must be motivated by desire to please guru sadhus and Krishna. The exposition should not be in the mood to defeat and or bring down anyone, but to uplift all that are hearing or reading the discussion. (Click here for the full article)

When you go along the parikrama path you have to turn left at the Krishna Balarama tree and go a few more meters. Many nice Indian and western devotees are living in this area. Choosing a Guru: Personal Perspective

It was a pleasureto read Hare Krsna dasi's article, How To Select a Spiritual Master, as she brings out solid philosophical and cultural points to uphold her argument. Spending my childhood years in a traditional Bengali Vaishnava family outside ISKCON, I was always given the idea that one needs to deepen one's understanding of the Shastras, take shelter of sadhus and Krishna naturally sends one a diksa guru when the time is ripe. Siksa was always more important than diksa. (Click here for the full article)

Srila Prabhupada's Bhajan Kutir
by Deena Bandhu dasa

The first day our Sankirtan was a grand success. Many locals joined in the kirtan party, such as Bhuti Krishna Goswami from Radharaman, Anupam Goswami from Sringara Vat, and Dr. Surendra Kumar Sharma. Dr. Sharma was previously in charge of the RSS in the entire district, and in spite of being 79 years old, he joined our Sankirtan Party. He said that even if one is born in a foreign country, he must be accepted as a Vaisnava. We are all one family, Acyuta Gotra. He has instructed the entire brahmin community of Vrindavan to support us.

Everyone was very ecstatic to see our dancing Sankirtan Party and the local newspapers took pictures of these important personalities chanting with us. (Click here for the full article)

Save Srila Prabhupada's Bhajan Kutir
by Deena Bandhu Das, Basu Ghosh Das, Padmnabha Goswami
Posted August 1, 2006

Nirmal Chand Goswami has had the ISKCON Devotees beaten and thrown out of Srila Prabhupada's Bhajan Kutir in Radha Damodar Mandir. In the scuffle, the Goswami almost threw the murti of Srila Prabhupada on the ground as the devotees were trying to place him back in his sacred rooms at Radha Damodar.

For last few months ISKCON Vrindavan has spent more than RS.200,000 to renovate and restore Srila Prabhupada's rooms. Due to the renovation work, no devotee was staying there and the murti of Srila Prabhupada was removed and placed with the murtis of the Six Goswami's next to the altar of Radha Damodar Mandir. Two Mayapur Problems for GBC Attention

Swimming safety

Almost every time I go to the Mayapura festival someone drowns in the Ganges or suffers a broken neck diving and sporting there. I just hope the GBC will recommend something to prevent such accidents from happening. This problem has been going on for too long a time, and it is not necessary. Common sense can prevent death or serious injury.

For example, in 1986 some devotees from South America tried to cross the Ganges, and two of them drowned on their way back. (Click here for the full article)

At present, we have so many seemingly insurmountable problems and crises within our society, to name but a few. Devotees are leaving the movement; ISKCON property is being mismanaged, squandered and stolen; our devotees are not properly taken care of, not trained and educated; some of them are even abused in various ways ... etc. Fortunately, there is a simple, yet powerful solution to many (if not all) of ISKCON's problems. How I Became a Devotee - Jayananda, the Perfect Leader

The first experience I had with Krishna consciousness was when a friend of mine had got a small book, Perfection of Yoga, on the Atlantic City, New Jersey boardwalk. At that time I was going to college at Rutgers in New Jersey and was home for the summer. I was also doing Yoga exercise daily so I was immediately interested in reading the book. I picked it up and read 5 or 10 pages and then put it down thinking this is not Yoga. At that time I though that yoga was physical and breathing exercise. (Click here for the full article)

Garlands for Pavitraropana Ekadasi
by Vrindavan dasa (Victor Epand)
Posted August 10, 2006

Here I will describe my experience of making garlands on Pavitraropana Ekadasi from August 4th to August 6th, 2006.

Pavitraropana Ekadasi is the festival of offering Lord Krishna a garland made of threads. This festival occurs once per year on the Ekadasi during the waxing moon in July/August. The special significance of this festival is to generate purity, complete a year of worship, and atone for any incomplete worship. Here I will describe my experience.

I chose silk thread, although other types can be used. The thread should be 3 ply, with each ply made of exactly 3 filaments. (Click here for the full article)

How To Select a Spiritual Master

I read the recent note by Patrice Waga, asking how to find a diksa guru. Click Here

Patrice states, "Here in my region we are not blessed by seeing so many Gurus." But, perhaps help is closer at hand than he realizes.

Many people make the mistake of thinking that the position of a Vaisnava guru is in the same position as an officially ordained priest, rabbi or minister. In fact, that is not the case.

One does not become guru by undergoing any formally structured training. One becomes guru because a person asks him or her to become their spiritual master. (Click here for the full article)
